I would be very surprised if the worst case senario, in which we don't sell anybody (except maybe a bullpen arm) and also don't win the division, doesn't happen. We're too close for Kenny to sell, and I don't think we're good enough to win the division either. I hope i'm wrong though, because if such events play out, it would be a disaster.

Official 2009-2010 NFL Thread

QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 01:01 AM) Angelo can't be banking on going into the season with Basanez and Hanie as Cutler's backups... can he? If Cutler gets hurt, you're screwed anyways. Same can be said for just about any other team and their starting quarterback, especially among teams with above average QB's. The backup QB position is the most overrated in football. Yeah you get a Tom Brady 2001 situation once in a blue moon, but that's about it. -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 01:07 AM) You notice he is gone, yet you do not notice the dramatic reduction of crime in the residential Streamwood area..... I haven't spent a great deal of time in the Streamwood area, but that is an interesting little coincidence there.

His profile says he was "last seen" at 11:26 pm yesterday, but I haven't seen a post of his in weeks, and he might be the best poster on the site. Anybody seen him?

If all fighters were like him, I'd be a boxing fan. Very entertaining guy to watch fight, and what a shame to have it end likely in foul play before reaching 40. RIP.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 12:25 AM) oh ok, yeah he did that for me too Getting back on topic, btw, the Sox actually won a game at the Metrodome. So it was a good night.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 12:20 AM) WHAT DID BRENT LILLIBRIDGE EVER DO TO YOU? Help make the first 5 or 6 weeks of this baseball season awful for me.
-
QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 12:18 AM) I think so. I'm thinking it's a generational thing. Younger folks replace the word "stink" with "suck". I consider the word "suck" a gross insult. That's what I do, I never say stink.

I haven't got into the mix in this thread, but I will simply say that there is absolutely no way in hell I would trade for Halladay.
-
QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 12:10 AM) I think you get where I'm coming from. Jaime Navarro sucked, because he was an asshole. But Buehrle can say that about his performance if he chooses. But for somebody that couldn't hold Joe Crede's jock strap on a MLB field to say he sucks is beyond ridiculous. What? I couldn't hold Brent Lillibridge's jock strap on a MLB field. Does that mean he doesn't suck?
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 11, 2009 -> 11:59 PM) That and the Twins defense looking like s*** tonight... The Twins are actually not all that good of a defensive team this year. Combine that with the fact that our team is a lot better built to play at the dome now, and we should be able to at least tread water up there.
-
2009 Joe Crede sucks. Late 2005/first half 2006 Joe Crede was very good. Overall/typical Joe Crede in Chicago (such as what he did for most of the first half of 2005) was pretty/slightly/somewhat below average and over valued. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 12:00 AM) So is to completely believe in stats and to ignore the results on the field. I watch almost every Sox game, I see what is happening very clearly. But our eyes can be very deceptive and very biased, even if we don't want them to be.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 11, 2009 -> 11:55 PM) If you think baseball is all about stats, you are missing a very special game that happens in between the foul lines. It's not all about stats, but the majority of baseball is about stats and the individuals that put them up. To simply ignore stats or diminish their importance is very unwise.
-
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 11, 2009 -> 11:52 PM) I don't know why this always ends up being one or the other with Crede, so the discussions border on ridiculous at times. The facts are that Crede carried this team in the second half of '05 and through the playoffs, cementing his place in White Sox history as a big reason for that championship. In his time with the Sox he was a monster of an all-around 3B for a period during 2005-2006 (note that I specified the time) until his back started becoming a problem, having him on and off the DL and in varying states of effectiveness (usually bad) which led to us having to let him go. Since he's been with the Twins he's been an average hitter at best and letting him go was the right thing to do. Yet we still end up somehow having 2 camps, one that says "bow in deference to Crede" and the other saying "Joe Crede sucks." Or at least that's how the 2 camps perceive each other. I will say that I truly believe Joe Crede's back was a problem during most of his time with the Sox, and if Joe writes in his book one day that the only time his back felt good was late 2005 and the first half of 2006, it wouldn't surprise me because I think he could have been a very good all around player (well above average) had his back never bothered him. But unfortunately, it did, so that never really happened.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 11, 2009 -> 11:51 PM) Actually you can. Instead of burying yourself in the individual stats, you can realize that some times the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. Some guys are winners. Joe Crede is a winner. If you aren't into individuals and stats, than baseball clearly isn't the sport for you because that's what the sport really is.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 11, 2009 -> 11:46 PM) He also was the MVP of the game according to WGN That was laughable. At the time they named Gavin MVP in honor of his mediocre, innings eating performance (the 8th inning), Bacon was clearly the MVP. He had an atrocious 9th inning though, so I'm not sure who the actual MVP should have been at the end of the game. Probably Thome, although that 3 run double was just Twins luck being on our side for once.
-
QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 11, 2009 -> 11:46 PM) Again, your opinion sucks. I'm not even saying you suck. I'm showing you more respect than you are Joe Crede. I may have rethink that stance, though. I echo your sentiments, except the Crede part obviously.
-
QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 11, 2009 -> 11:42 PM) My opinion of your opinion will not change. It sucks. You can say it sucks, but "he helped us win in 2005" is not legitimate reasoning as to why it sucks. So I would say your saying my opinion sucks sucks more than my opinion.

QUOTE (Felix @ Jul 11, 2009 -> 11:05 PM) Sorry, but what? I agree that Floyd is an above average pitcher, but you do realize his ERA is nearly 4.5 this year... right? And yes, I know he had a nice stretch where his ERA was below 1.5 and he was dominating, but to be "so f***ing good" you need to be "so f***ing good" for the entire season, not short stretches. I like Gavin as a middle of the rotation guy, but he's as overrated as they come on these boards. I realize this isn't the time or thread for this sort of thing, but it had to be said. I think Gavin will improve a bit more, and at the end of the day be a solid 3rd starter. Nothing wrong with that (especially with the fair contract he signed for), but I agree he's a bit overrated around here.
-
QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 11, 2009 -> 11:32 PM) Crede may not be the player he once was, and he wasn't great with us by any means. But the man played a huge role in the stretch and post season run in 2005 and I believe he deserves a bit more respect than just saying he sucks. When the Sox hold a reunion of the team in 2025, you young guys will be hitting your feet for Joe Crede because you will remember what he did and it's very possible that 2005 may be the only World Series victory you have ever experienced at that time. I was 47, almost 48, years old when I saw my first Sox WS Championship. I appreciate those guys. Each and every one of them. Crede, more than most. My opinion of Joe Crede will not change. I will appreciate what he did in 2005, but realize at the same time what kind of player he actually was during his time on the south side. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 11, 2009 -> 11:36 PM) I look at one number. Wins. For teams, I do the same thing. But since you can't actually measure wins and losses with individual players, I look at their personal numbers. And Joe Crede's numbers say he was a slightly below average offensive player overall while in Chicago, and a plus defender.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 11, 2009 -> 11:24 PM) Agreed, i'd be interested to see what Drew Stubbs can do too. I believe I heard Stubbs is the guy they are calling up to take Bruce's spot.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 11, 2009 -> 11:20 PM) That's a team that has no chance to compete in the 2nd half, and would really hurt their future if they traded young guys for rentals. Jocketty knows that, I wouldn't expect them to be dealing. I wouldn't rule any team out of the NL Central race though, the winner of that division probably will only have about 85 wins.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 11, 2009 -> 11:22 PM) You lost me at "overrated" The numbers don't lie, however I know some people will never actually look at them because of how fun 2005 was. That's fine though, it doesn't bother me a great deal.

Juan Uribe entered tonight hitting .301 with a .796 OPS, almost 2004 esque. He also entered tonight hitting .355 with a .903 OPS at his home park, pitchers haven AT&T Park. How is that even possible? I'm not sure how he did it in 2004 and i'm not sure how he is doing it now.
-
QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 11, 2009 -> 11:09 PM) Without Joe Crede there is no way the Sox win the 2005 World Series. Hell, they may not have even made the post season. So yeah, he sucks. I appreciate what he did in 2005, and he was a needed piece in our title that year. But he still sucks, and he was still overrated during his tenure with us (although he didn't suck then, he hit for a bit more average and played better defense in 2005 than in say, 2008 and I'm sure 2009). You're allowed to realize both things.
