QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 12:26 AM) At this point and judging from Oz's comments I can't see him taking over for Juan immediately. If Joe is smart he'll shut up and wait for the chance to play and not be a distraction. I doubt the Sox will move Joe right into the lineup but I could be wrong. On a side note, isn't it funny how the acquisition of Griffey hasn't cut Paulie's time much at all? Paulie is really hitting right now (.302/.467/.558 in 43 at bats during August) so nobody is going to take playing time from him at the moment. There just isn't any room for Griffey right now, and although he's struggled, that's a good sign of how deep the lineup is.

This doesn't matter. This team will suck no matter who is at quarterback and I don't think this team will be good again at all until somebody other than Orton or Grossman is at quarterback. The quarterback of the next good Chicago Bears football team isn't on the roster yet, and he might not even be in the league yet.

I don't think anybody can blame Ozzie for being tired of Joe Crede and his back problems. Him gone hasn't been a loss at all anyways, our offense is doing a great job since he went away and the defense at 3rd base has been about 100 times better.

Not sure if anybody saw the 200 meter qualifier they showed tonight with Bolt, but it might have been even more scary than some of his 100's. He basically jogged the last 75 meters and still won easily. As for gymnastics, I actually find it entertaining to watch and any sport which is judged for all the scoring will have a flawed system. However, some of the scoring in this olympiad has been criminal, even somebody who knows little about gymnastics like me can see some of this stuff. The 400 meter hurdles sweep for the United States was nice though. -
s*** like that double play mix up in the first inning is going to get us killed against good teams, need to tighten that up. But other than that nonsense, Mark did an ok job of battling despite having no stuff tonight, and the offense was about as good as they can be. Love the CQ MVP chants too. We have a tough task tomorrow, but hopefully the fellas can figure out a way to win because this should be a sweep if we can do so.

All the people who would be annoyed by the olympics during the time they were in the city would love all the improvements they leave behind after they are over. Whether or not you care about the olympics or want them in the city, the good things they would do for Chicago especially after the summer of 2016 with the improvements they would leave behind in the city would be great.

The most incredible thing about the 2005 White Sox is they were dominant without being dominant. They won 99 regular season games, led wire to wire from game 1 to game 162 on their way to beating out a very good Indians team for the division title, and went 11-1 in the playoffs on their way to a championship. So in that respect, the Sox were as dominant as any baseball team you will ever find. But at the same time, they played so many close games and won every time they needed to because they always managed to come up with the big play when it was absolutely necessary. I think the World Series was a perfect summary of what the 2005 White Sox were. They were dominant in record, sweeping their opponent, yet all four games were close, and they won in every way possible (extra innings, great starting pitching, offense, bulpen, defense, managing, home runs, fundementals, at home, on the road, in good weather, in bad weather, etc) over that period of games.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 03:12 PM) Would you agree that this is the reason the winner's postgame threads are shorter than the loser threads? I know that's a common complaint by some people on here, and it just seems like the nature of the beast that there's more diverse opinions about a game that your team loses compared to the euphoria when they win. People who complain that the loser threads are longer than the winner threads don't understand the nature of sports. Any coach will tell you that there is a lot more to digest and analyze when you lose a game than there is when you win one, and that is true. When you lose, there are things to second guess, things that went wrong to analyze, coaching decisions to criticize, ways to look at how the team can improve next game. On the other hand, when you win, there just isn't much to say. They played well so how much can you anaylze that, not much to criticize because they won, on to the next game. Fanbases who can talk as much about winning as losing as typically fanbases like the Cubs, who don't know what winning feels like.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 16, 2008 -> 11:53 PM) The defense is too good and will prevent them from losing that many games. The bright side to this is they won't waste a lot of money due to drafting a bust in the top 10 Yeah the reason I first thought 5-11 was their defense and maybe I should just stick with that. They are going to have a bottom 3 offense in football though, and odds are it will be THE worst offense in my opinion. -

QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 17, 2008 -> 10:57 AM) Didn't he win 8 medals (6 gold) in Athens? You are correct, he won 6 gold medals and 2 bronze medals in Athens and then 8 golds in Beijing. I believe he even ran a race at the 2000 olympics in Australia and finished 4th when he was 15. Also, Lopez Lomong didn't get out of the 1500 meter semifinals. That isn't a surprise, but I'd have loved to have seen him pull off the upset somehow. Oh well, still a great story and he still got the carry the flag at the opening ceremony, which is arguably just as great an honor as even winning a medal. -
Well we've played two horrible and stupid games in Oakland, so I guess it's a good thing we still have a chance to win the series tomorrow. Let's get it.

I was thinking 5-11 for the Bears, but they might be one of the worst teams in the league, and thus be a game or two worse than that. -

I think Bolt could have shaved another tenth (run about a 9.59) had he gone all out for 100 meters. It is amazing how fast he is, never seen anything close to that. The double scary part is that supposedly he's better in the 200 meters, and he's only run the 100 for like a year. I would imagine one day in the next couple years, he'll be better trained as well as run hard for 100 meters, and who knows, he could probably run a 9 and a half flat (9.50). Just amazing stuff, and congrats to Michael Phelps. I see a lot of the points the detractors make and I hear them, but to win 8 gold medals in one olympiad is one of the great accomplishment in the history of sport and that's all there is to it. -

QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Aug 16, 2008 -> 12:14 PM) I could care less about my ancestors nation! Americans love their ethnicity and varied cultures, but we cheer like mad for the stars and stripes. US beats top ranked Serbia in water polo. America, f*** yeah!!! That win was double huge in water polo. Not only is beating the best team in the world obviously awesome, but they'd have been out of the competition had they lost. Now, I believe they advance on if they win their next game. James Blake also lost his bronze medal match unfortunately. It's tough because he had a very good opponent and probably had a hangover from losing such a heartbreaker in the semifinals, so it's no surprise he lost in straight sets. -
I'm a cracker, almost entirely italian with a little polish thrown in because I am from the NW side of Chicago and they won't allow you on the streets there unless you have at least a little polish in your blood.

I'm going to do something I haven't done for a long time and not watch the game today, too damn stressful to do right now. Hopefully we get a win as I watch the olympics. GO SOX!!!

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 16, 2008 -> 09:48 AM) I don't understand how someone can root against their country. I can see rooting for the country of your ancestors, but not when they're going against your own country. I mean, Serbia? C'mon. I understand patriotism and all, but you're American. Go live in Serbia for an extended period of time and see if you think it's still so great. Agreed. I always root for the country of my ancestry (Italy), but when they play America, it's go America no questions asked. The United States basketball team looked incredible today, that might be the best game by the international team since the olympics in Atlanta, if not since the original dream team in 1992. They will win every game they have left by at least 20 to 25 points if they can make three pointers, which they did today. Still a long way to go though, and you'd figure they'll have to win a tough game to get the gold medal. I'm with the poster who said it's a joke the 100 meters wasn't on live on any channel too. I understand they couldn't buy it out for primetime like they did the swimming, but in the age of the internet, the whole tape delay thing doesn't work. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 16, 2008 -> 12:36 AM) Bolt's sub 10 second 100M was ridiculous. Oh I know, a 9.92 when you spend the last 50 meters looking to your left and right and jogging. If he doesn't win the 100 and do it in world record time in the finals, I'd be shocked. -

The U.S.A. baseball team comes from behind to beat Canada 5-4 in what was basically a must win game for both sides. Also, the United States is now 7 medals ahead of China but 11 behind in golds. It is pretty clear the Chinese will take the all important gold count while America will take the overall count. Also, it's good to see the track and field stuff getting going, always fun to watch that. -
QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 11:59 PM) Losses like these tend to breed losing streaks. If we win tomorrow, that obviously is negated. Every team will have games like this, who has the shortest memory? A game ahead of Minnesota or tied is not relevant, if we can't outplay them by one game the rest of the season we don't deserve the playoffs. As I have said previously, if we play near our potential we'll have this thing in the bag. Well THIS post I agree with. You can't get back a win that you should have but don't though, and that is why tonight's loss is just unbearable. Tomorrow's game is of supreme importance though, we need to get this loss on the backburner.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 11:56 PM) Why couldn't the A's have just called for a squeeze? The game was lost before that. The Brian Anderson baserunning play, Uribe's error giving them a free run, Octavio Dotel's pitch selection, even Alexei falling down at 1st base. We just gift wrapped this one.
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 11:51 PM) Not just saying this because I'm pissed off right now, but I haven't been 100% completely sold on this team at any point this year. We still might win the division (we're extremely fortunate the Tigers and Indians dropped off the face of the planet). But I don't think this team is really THAT good. We look good at times when were we go HR derby on everybody. But this isn't a high level I.Q. team. I think your post in general is completely accurate, but the key points are the third to last and final sentences. More specifically, the main reason this team indeed isn't THAT good is because we aren't a high level I.Q. team. If we were simply average to slightly above average in terms of baseball common sense during games, we'd be half a dozen games better recordwise IMO.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 04:15 PM) If the Sox tie with the Twins at the end of the year, or lose by 1 game, am I going to be the only one who thinks about Opening Day and the awful job by the umpires? QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 04:22 PM) I'll think about it a bit, but at the same time, we've had so many games this season that we should have won but didn't, that I'll be thinking moreso about those. Performances like the one this evening by the White Sox are precisely what I was thinking when I gave the response I did to your post, and also are precisely why I won't think about opening day if we lose the division by one game. We'd be up in this race by half a dozen games if we just weren't so damn stupid in terms of baseball IQ. The amount of games that we should win, but give away due to general stupidity, is simply mind boggling.
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 11:49 PM) This loss is irrelevant if we go out and win tomorrow. You do realize this division could come down to one game right? And that if we lose two out of three this weekend, it's because of that game. And that Minnesota is now tied with us instead of one game back because we just gift wrapped a win for Oakland and begged them to take it. But sure, if we win tomorrow, and are forced to play a rubber match Sunday instead of look for a sweep, this game doesn't matter. Ok.
-
I don't think we've given one away quite like that all year. This team is just so damn stupid, it's truly incredible to watch. Some of the blame certainly goes on Ozzie and KW for putting together/managing a team that lacking in IQ, but also, the players take some blame too, because nobody should be that dumb. It's hard to enjoy a pennant race when you give away game after game after game you should win. The White Sox toughest opponent is themselves, and that is who will defeat them if we lose the division race, not the Twins. Just a horrible loss to a horrible team at a horrible stadium we can't win in.
