  1. Today's question is, will Aaron Harang be screwed out of the Cy Young for the second year in a row? Last year, he went 16-11 with a 3.76 ERA for a below .500, missed the postseason Reds team. His led the NL in wins (16), complete games (6), strikeouts (216), and games started (35). Not only was he screwed out of the Cy Young Award, but he became the first pitcher in MLB history to lead his league in wins, k's, and complete games and not get A SINGLE VOTE for Cy Young, not even a 10th place vote. This year, heading into September with a team 11 games under .500, Harang is 14-3 with a 3.51 ERA. He is 1st in the NL in win/loss percentage, is 2nd in innings, games started, shutouts, and strikeouts, and 3rd in wins. And this is a guy whose had 4 wins blown by his bullpen. If he were to get screwed out of the Cy Young again, that'd be a damn shame.
  2. QUOTE(whitesoxmanager @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 04:01 PM) Tears swell in my eyes after watching the Phils win today. For all of you that thought Aaron Rowand wasn't going to be missed. I just wanna say a long overdue kiss my ass! Congrats on making the dumbest post of the year!!! Seriously, would Aaron Rowand fix any of the following: Our year long hole in LF Joe Crede getting hurt Jon Garland sucking for half of the year Jose Contreras sucking for all of the year John Danks being inconsistent Our entire bullpen except Bobby Jenks being bad almost all year Our lack of young talent on the farm to help the club Our crappy SS Our lack of depth, both in the majors and levels below The tough competition in the AL Central and AL period Please, think before you spew inarguable ignorance.
  3. My friend at ND says it's common knowledge on campus that Double D has been named starting QB for the Irish, and people are even sending him congrats on his facebook page. That would be the right decision IMO, Demetrius is going to be really good.
  4. QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 04:02 PM) I realize this could be a likely scenerio, but come on. Posting libel comments aren't really necessary. If he was out and drinking someone saw him, and that will come to light. In the mean time, how about passing on the assumptions. If assumptions and opinions (especially one acquired through common sense and reason like this one) aren't allowed on message boards, why do they exist? The Score and ESPN 1000 already have had stories on how Briggs was seen at at least 2 different nightclubs that evening, so it's pretty obvious what happened.
  5. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 04:04 PM) How many of the present MLB gms have a World Series ring? Well then what's a better GM, one that had one lightning in a bottle year and a ring, and the rest of the time misses the playoffs every year, or one with a solid farm system and who is in the playoffs on a very regular basis? The ring feels better, but the organization with consistent trips to October and a good farm system is far better off long term.
  6. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 02:29 PM) Given KW is one of the more successful GM's in the game, he is the one I'd say definitely not. The others I could see arguments for. When did 1 playoff appearance in 7 years and a team in year #7 that is in last place at the end of August with a bad farm system and old and very expensive MLB squad make you one of the more successful GM's in the game?
  7. He was definitely drunk, and is very lucky he didn't crash into anybody else and wasn't injured and was able to ditch the scene and avoid a breathilized/blood test. By a streak of very dumb luck, he appears to be in great shape to avoid a lot of trouble. Athletes stupidity never ceases to amaze me though.
  8. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 02:40 PM) How could that possibly be doing Watkins a favor? It's definitly an eligibility issue. Do you really think Watkins would want everyone to publicly know he is not eligible to play, therefore having every other school pass on him as well? Too late for him to play at any other big time school this year, especially when he wants it to be out west, so it's not like he takes a hit. He'll go JUCO or Prep this year out west and go to a PAC 10 school or something next year, and he also avoids the public hit of being the guy who got homesick in August. Makes sense to me.
  9. Well the Watkins stuff explains the Davis signing now. Although the academic stuff is still nonsense, the kid was homesick (although I give Bruce credit for not saying that and thus avoiding some low life fans finding and harassing Watkins). Ah well, I wish Watkins luck at whatever west coast school he ends up at in 2008-2009.
  10. Kenny Williams, and it's not even close. He took over in 2001, and since then we have 6 Octobers out of 7 at home, and currently reside with a poor farm system and even worse major league team. This is such an easy question to answer it's not even funny.
  11. I must say after watching that tape again, I don't encourage throwing s*** at people, but somebody shoulda threw a battery at that prick Fick to go with the beer shower...what an ass.
  12. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Aug 27, 2007 -> 04:14 PM) Purpura was NOT a very good GM. He inherited the 2005 team. He just wasn't very good. Plus the Jennings trade...didn't turn out so well. KW inherited a team coming off a division title in 2000, and has guided us to 1 playoff appearance in 7 years, that's NOT a very good GM. And how are all the moves we made to fix the bullpen working out? How about our farm system, where is our Hunter Pence?
  13. 2008 DH=Thome 2009 DH=Dye I thought that was pretty clear and obvious here, plus it's WAY too early to give up on the Josh in LF idea, especially since he might end up at 3B again if Crede re-hurts himself in 2008. And yes, we won in 2005 with defense, but Pods was by far, no doubt, inarguably our worst fielder on that team, and I see no reason why Fields can't be that mediocre in the field in 2008 while hitting 30 plus homers and driving in near 100.
  14. QUOTE(Hideaway Lights @ Aug 27, 2007 -> 03:43 PM) 17 homers in 75 games is a sick total for Josh - I know it's probably too early to project a full season but basically he's shaping up to put up Adam Dunn like numbers - 40 HR, .245-.250 AVG for a season - with a hell of a lot more upside than Dunn. I'm pretty excited to see his 2008. Uhh I see the comparison, but the bolded is silly. He has the ability to put up similar home run, rbi, average, and strikeout numbers as Dunn while playing a similar (mediocre) LF on defense, but Dunn walks A LOT more, WAY WAY more, and is still pretty young, thus has a lot more value as an offensive player.
  15. QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 27, 2007 -> 03:55 PM) I think it depends on the conditions. Like that game that started at 11 or whatever it was the other night... that was a MLB decision not the team or the umps. I also think comparing a game cancelled in May and one cancelled in August is a stretch. Not when the sun came out half an hour (if that) after scheduled game time and there was no sign of rain for the rest of the night. It's one thing if they call it at 7 and it rains until 9 and then stops, but that night was ridiculous.
  16. Bush's comments today which talked about how great Alberto is and basically blamed the media and anti-Gonzales people for this resignation were amazing. Even by Dubya's lofty standards, they were mind bogglingly stupid.
  17. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 27, 2007 -> 03:51 PM) Yep. And they canceled it QUICK that night. s***heads. BTW, people do need to realize that it's the umpire crew that calls the games, not the Sox. Well whoever called it was stupid, because I was sitting there with the radar on my cell phone and it was obvious the rain was going to end in pretty short order, yet the game was actually called off 5 minutes before it was even supposed to start. It was ridiculous.
  18. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 27, 2007 -> 03:49 PM) I guess my spin is, yea, it was worth it, but at the same time, I want to have the CHANCE to win every year. It doesn't mean that I EXPECT to win, but I want to at least be in the race down to the wire each and every year. You have to strive to be a playoff team every day out once Spring Training starts. Too many of these buttholes are still living fat, dumb, and happy off of 2005, whether some of you want to admit certain guys are or not. This team is close... on paper... which is a lot of the problem. I think that is really how I feel on all counts to be honest. You put it better than I did though.
  19. The real problem with that rainout was the fact it was sunny and clear by 7:30 that night and the conditions didn't change for the rest of the evening, while in the meantime Chicago had one of it's worst storm in decades last Thursday and they waited over 2 hours to try and start that game. And the logic can't be tickets sold, we sold over 37,000 tickets for todays game according to the box score, which is probably about the same as Thursday.
  20. Most painful? No, because watching the 2000 teams entire pitching staff get hurt and be swept by Seattle hurt more, as did having such a good team not even make it to October in 2003 and then getting the Cubs scare, and I think my childhood was scarred by 1994 and 1997. But it is without a doubt the worst and most pathetic Sox team I have ever seen, and it becomes even more depressing looking at our bleak immediate future.
  21. Well, it's clear why they rescheduled this game for a work day in late August, it appears everybody on Soxtalk had tickets and they wanted to screw us over. Damn them!!
  22. I doubt it, the Astros owner is a lot more proactive than Uncle Jerry. It'll take at least 2 more years before we do something this logical unfortunately.
  23. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 27, 2007 -> 03:36 PM) Fields seems to be our best power hitter late in games already. That's at least 4 homers hit in the 7th inning or later that were relatively important. Yeah your right. I just think it is a case of Josh being very good at hitting bad pitching, and taking advantage of facing bullpen arms. Obviously he hit the one off Putz, but even that was just a 1st pitch fastball that Josh guessed right on, and we were down 5 with the bases loaded so Putz took the risk and lost (although still got the save in the end). I think Josh is just really good at hitting bad pitchers at this point in his career, and if you want to see those, get at bats late against bullpens.
  24. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 27, 2007 -> 03:27 PM) How many people were there today? I know I had tickets to the original game, but couldn't go due to work. It's too bad...seems like a fun game to go to. Yeah I had tickets to the original game too, but first day of classes at NIU today so I couldn't go. Got back just in time to see that bottom of the 7th though, wow. Nice to win one.
  25. Well at least ONE owner from the 2005 World Series had the common sense to not accept being pathetic, when will the other one catch on?
