  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 04:18 PM) Bobby Jenks comes to mind, as does Matt Thornton. Life is a lot different in the bullpen than in the starting rotation.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 04:13 PM) This team certainly has a shot, but let's not pretend that "we'll add another big bat at the deadline!" is a decent strategy. Trying to do big things in the AL with a mediocre offense is really hard. Not impossible (see: 2005), but VERY difficult. It would have been hard enough as it is, and now that Edwin Jackson is in Jake Peavy's former rotation spot, it'll be that much harder. And with a manager who gives Dayan Viciedo at bats to Mark Kotsay, it makes the offense that much worse.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 04:09 PM) Judging by his history, I have no problem giving Don Cooper a shot at who he wants to fix. With his arm, Jackson is always tradable. Even if Coop can "fix" Jackson, I have no interest in keeping him at the cost of Danks or Floyd.
  4. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 04:08 PM) I'm not apologizing for Kenny. I don't think you'll ever find me saying that not signing Thome was a good idea. But I'm also not going to act like a spoiled 5 year old and cry about something that we have absolutely no hope of ever changing. You guys are crucifying our FO for not making a move that no other GM in baseball made either. You have been insisting for the past week that IF we had other the tools available to us that all these other organizations with good farm systems have, we would be able to make a move like this no problem. And yet, none of those GMs made this move either. I'm not trying to be a KW apologist, I am trying to be reasonable and use common sense. How would you defend all of the at bats Mark Kotsay gets that Dayan Viciedo should be getting? That's a current issue that is being handled poorly.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 04:07 PM) Extending Jackson? Where's that "Shooting myself" smiley? Yeah, if we extend Jackson and let Floyd or Danks go, that's definitely worthy of such action.
  6. QUOTE (Cali @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 04:02 PM) Time for addition by subtraction.... When Teahen gets back DFA Kotsay or Jones.... Unfortunately it's gonna be send Viciedo back to AAA :/ Exactly. This (along with the lack of AB's for Viciedo) is probably the most upsetting thing right now. If we DFA Kotsay when Teahen comes back and platoon Mark and pimp at DH with Omar at 3rd, I'd feel quite a bit better.
  7. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 04:01 PM) Dunn was going to make 15mil + for 4-5 years. Jackson is 8mil for 1 year. Thats a huge difference in terms of payroll. Dunn wasn't going to resign anyways. Just say the Nationals wanted too much for a rental, so we said no. Don't bring up payroll constraints when you just acquired a pitcher who makes 8 million dollars next year and needs to be fixed. It rings hollow.
  8. QUOTE (G&T @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:57 PM) KW says: Wasn't going to take away from this club (obviously Viciedo) for a rental. Didn't believe they could sign Dunn because he claims they are strapped for cash (obviously that's questionable). And that's all. Indeed. That statement at best rings hollow, and at worst is complete bulls*** when you look at something like the Edwin Jackson move.
  9. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:53 PM) I bet if you compared 2005 offense (after Thomas went down) to the 2010 version, there's not much of a difference....if so, it's pretty negligible. I'm not conceding anything yet. Are we as good as we were in 2005? Are we going to get as lucky this year as we did in 2005? I don't like to make the 2005 comparisons. Not only was that team really good, it was also really lucky.
  10. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:51 PM) Maybe, but the fact is that this dh spot is one of the bigger debacles I can ever remember when it comes to a competing team in baseball. Everyone in the f***in world except our brilliant management knew this was going to be a complete disaster. Then we heard that if that stupid idea failed then Kenny would for sure take care of it by the deadline, low and behold it's passed 3 o'clock on July 31st and we're stuck with the same bulls***. Whether anybody likes it or not, people have a right to be pissed about this and it goes back to spring training. Exactly. Most of my anger isn't even about today. Stuff like Berkman rejecting a deal to us and Dunn falling through happens at the deadline. Even a risk like trading Hudson for Jackson because he might help our rotation happens, and although I disagree with that deal, I'm not overwhelmingly pissed about it. The point is, had the offseason been done properly, we wouldn't be this desperate for a DH right now. And in addition to that, I think a lot of the anger today is coming from the fact that Viciedo (who could help the DH spot a bit) isn't getting nearly enough at bats there, and could very well be sent down as soon as Teahen is ready, which is not good.
  11. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:48 PM) Jackson's babip has been up this year. The rest of his peripherals have been pretty good. If the White Sox have a reason to believe that he has a problem that can be fixed, this could be one of the best pick ups ever. If they dont really believe that and it was to just flip him, it may be a disaster. Obviously its hard to tell which is true, but I think that the Sox wanted jackson and were hoping to get a hitter as well. The Sox will need a guy with electric stuff, and Jackson could ft the bill. You're speaking in incredible hyperbole today, badger. Optimism is fine, but one of the best pick ups ever? And even if Jackson is good, our offense still isn't good enough.
  12. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:45 PM) His point is not to defend the team or the FO. His point is that you are RUINING the chance of any good discussion when you keep rehashing all the old awful BS that has been talked about for the last 4 months. Jesus Christ, this is the most sadistic and cynical fanbase in all of sports. One would think we have 57 titles or something. We've won as many World Series in the last 92 years as we've lost on purpose. Why wouldn't we be sadistic and cynical?
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:43 PM) The ultimate deep pocket farm team on the planet walked away from Dunn. The problem isn't not getting Dunn IMO. The problem is not getting any offensive help when we needed it badly, and trading one of the few prospects in our organization with any value for a big pile of mediocrity in Edwin Jackson. It's not completely hopeless since "Coop can fix him", but it was a bad deadline for KW.
  14. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:41 PM) good point. continue repeating yourself I like your "it's over" defense. Just proves we screwed up. Why should anybody even post at this site? We have no control over any of this. Sports are just a waste of time in general, for that matter.
  15. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:37 PM) Ok, and? its over. Thome is a twin. Why are you in this thread? The Sox didn't make a deal today. It's over.
  16. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:31 PM) I think your opinion is clear man. What if Jackson goes 10-0 with a 0.00 ERA. wha wha bad move is the ONLY ceiling wha wha. Talk about beating a dead horse, and it's only an opinion, not even gospel. Yeah, because a guy with a career WHIP of 1 and a half just screams soon to be stud. He's just a guy, and one that costs a pretty high amount of money at that. We were trying to use him to get Dunn, and it didn't work, so we're stuck with him. Sucks, but that's what happened.
  17. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:32 PM) oh yes, lets cry about Thome some more Had we kept him over Jayson Nix like any organization using logic would have, we wouldn't even be dying for a DH right now.
  18. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:30 PM) Let's face it, the best bet for Sox to have a productive DH is for Viciedo to become the everyday starter. However, I give that a 1% chance of happening. I'd say less than 1 percent considering Dayan will be gone when Teahen arrives. I wish our manager wasn't an idiot when it comes to offense, a platoon of Dayan and Thome at DH would be nice right about now.
  19. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:25 PM) Wait what? You didnt like the Rios deal last year? That was one of the greatest highway robberies ever. Sure Rios had been struggling but not every player can go their whole career with out a bad season or 2. It may work out that way, but that was not the obvious good move for the Sox at the time you seem to think it was. Rios wasn't hitting at all, had a HUGE contract (still does), and had his effort questioned by many people. It was a huge risk, and it has worked out so far, but it was still a big risk. It certainly had the appearance of a team having it's bluff called on a waiver claim at the time too.
  20. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:24 PM) I am happy. But our paper thin system really bit us in the ass. Yep, I can understand KW not wanting to give up Viciedo (even though his inability to walk concerns me greatly). But it's pretty clear the only reason Adam Dunn is not on our team, and thus we still absolutely suck at DH and have a huge hole in our lineup, is lack of a farm system. Let this be known as an example of lack of minor league talent biting us in the ass.
  21. Well it looked like we got caught with our pants down last year on the Rios thing, and that's worked out well. It appears we got caught with our pants down again on Edwin Jackson, guess we'll have to hope this works out well too.
  22. QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:17 PM) When will people understand that money isn't an issue. Every time someone complains about money, the White Sox add more payroll. We're not the Yankees. 8 million dollars next year for a guy that isn't very good as your 4th starter (and giving up one of your very few prospects to acquire it) is a really bad move. If Jackson pitches well and gets us into the playoffs, then it's only just a bad move. That's the ceiling for this trade, a bad move. Which is why I don't like it.
  23. No idea what the Hawks will do now, that number is right on the line.
  24. QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:13 PM) No Jake Peavy = need for starting pitching. How is this so hard to comprehend? Because Edwin Jackson sucks, costs a lot of money, and doesn't fill that need with the way he's pitching right now.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:11 PM) I've been saying for a while that Danks is out the door anyway. The fact we keep acquiring pitchers does nothing to change that opinion for me. Jackson isn't a solution to replace Danks though since he'll be gone after 2011. Just an expensive, mediocre stopgap that takes up too much payroll resource next year.
