White Sox make no last minute deals
whitesoxfan101 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (PlunketChris @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:09 PM) I still like Edwin Jackson as the #5 for this year and next more than I like Hudson. The Sox improved yesterday. It's several million additional dollars on next years payroll for a back of the rotation starter. Jackson had better pitch well down the stretch and help us into the playoffs, or else it's a really bad trade. As of now, I'll be nice and just say it was a bad trade. With how bad Jackson has been pitching in the NL, we're not even for sure he'll be noteably better than Hudson would have been the rest of the way. -
White Sox make no last minute deals

The Edwin Jackson trade now makes very little sense. Bad, bad deadline for KW assuming we indeed did nothing today. -
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:01 PM) BNightengale #mlb White Sox say there are done at deadline. No more deals at least not until players clear waivers Well if true, our World Series chances are now very, very, very low. Barring a waiver surprise.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 02:55 PM) There's little doubt in my mind that Dayan is headed for the minors, I'd say it'll be upon Teahen's return at the latest. He's only being used against LHP and plays the same positions as Teahen (who they'll have to find some kind of PT for when he returns without sacrificing Kotsay's ABs), seems like he's played a very specialized role on this club, one that would be eliminated with the return of Teahen. I agree, and considering how much we're starving for offense right now, it's an absolute joke.
-
I don't think Ozzie is going to give Dayan enough at bats to have him truly make the impact he's capable of. He has to get his boy Kotsay in there for whatever reason. I'd also like to see therapist get more AB's in AJ's place as the catcher until he cools off, but I'm not holding my breath there.

Depends on your definition of fine. If you think being a very slight favorite in the division who would basically have to hope for a run of great luck in the playoffs to do anything if you get there is fine, they yes we are. If you want to be a strong AL Central favorite who is capable of making a big playoff run without a big string of luck, then another significant bat is needed IMO.

I'm actually not as upset as a lot of people seem to be about the Jackson/Hudson trade, even though I think it's pretty obvious Hudson is worth more, and Jackson could have been had for less. If a bat isn't acquired by the deadline today though, I'll be among the list in line to come in here and rip KW to shreds.

Yeah I know some really bad ones too, but don't want to get banned. Somebody should be a disclaimer warning on the title or something and then we can get to the really bad ones.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 02:09 AM) That's absolutely true and those who say otherwise are absolutely wrong. I've seen gang 1st hand that hasn't been reported on the news. And I have never, EVER heard the terms Latin Kings or GD's or anything of the sort on the news. It's easy for people to say that crime isn't an issue when they've never been jumped for no reason or they've never had their garage broken in to multiple times or they've never had cops drive around their neighborhood with spotlights between houses and in yards while helicopters are flying overhead or they don't hear gunshots once a week. You're kind of jumping points here. Yes, you are right that there is crime that isn't reported, and yes you are also right that crime is a HUGE issue in Chicago, I don't anybody would argue that. But crime in Chicago is still down overall these days. Is that a sign that crime in Chicago used to be just amazingly bad, and now it's only really bad? Possibly. But crime is down overall, even if maybe it's as bad or worse in the areas of the city you specifically hang out in.

QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 02:08 PM) Ive never understood people's embarrassmennt over taking a loud dump or farting in a public restroom. I mean, that's the proper place to do it, right? Exactly, and this is why I've never had trouble peeing or taking a dump in public restrooms. I mean, they are there for a reason, and everybody else that goes in there is doing it. I'd prefer to not do it for the simple reason that public bathrooms are dirty often times, but if you've gotta go, you've gotta go. QUOTE (girlslikebaseballtoo#26 @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 10:06 PM) I didn't know we were allowed to say "dick" .. I coulda been cussin' you guys a longgg time ago! wtf?!?! Oh yeah, no problem. Say whatever you want, if it's something you can't say, the system will edit it automatically for you. There was a time where you could whatever you wanted here unedited, but those days are sadly gone.

Taking a fan to their first game at the Cell . . .
whitesoxfan101 replied to Texsox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 12:44 PM) The Upper Deck is just fine to watch a game, not sure why some people have a problem with it. The only downside to it is that unless you have season tickets you don't have access to the lower concourse and what not. Agreed. Even the lack of access to the lower concourse doesn't bother me because I've been in every part of The Cell so many times that I know what and where everything is. Then again, I guess I'm a bad person to ask for this thread since I'm at The Cell anywhere from half a dozen to a dozen times during a typical season. For a newbie though, I'd probably suggest sitting downstairs. The one thing with the upper deck is make sure you're within the first 15 rows so as not to have any of the polls holding the roof of the UD up in your way. I actually like sitting in the upper deck though if i'm anywhere between first base and third base directionally (or close to it) and within the first 10 rows or so, awesome view of the game. And indeed, as you seemed to figure out yesterday, take the train and then the red line if coming from the suburbs, or just the red line if in the city. Driving is a pain in the butt, even with the parking situation being good down there, because the traffic obviously blows. -
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 02:25 PM) If you cant be creepy anonymously on the internet, where can you be? Creeps are people too! Haha I actually agree with this. But not all ladies want to be creeped on. Very unfortunate?

Is there a psychological or sociological reason that heat tends to cause crime to increase?
-
I have a couple of attractive female friends who are also Sox fans that told me they were considering posting here recently, and I basically told them to do whatever they want, but be ready for the creepers to swoon. Neither of them has posted here, and I'll willing to take the heat for it.

QUOTE (Soxy @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 01:58 PM) It's been a hotter than average summer, no? Yeah. Temperatures had actually been below average here quite a bit in recent times (it was very cool last summer for instance, I think there were only a couple of 90 degree days total the entire season), but it's been warmer this time around.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 12:46 PM) I thought it was more of a sitcom type of thing, not so much a real thing. Same here.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 10:32 AM) What sucks about the baseball postseason is that it is a total crapshoot. In football, the least you have to win is 3 games to win a Super Bowl, which is the equivalent of 18.75% of the regular season games. In the NBA, you have to win 16 games, and more are always played - unless, of course, some team gets ridiculously hot and somehow manages to beat the other best teams in the NBA in 16 straight games, which doesn't happen - which makes up 19.5%. Hockey is the same thing as the NBA. However, baseball has the longest season by far (which is good, because it absolutely determines who the best and worst teams are, unlike football, where a team can struggle for 6 games and be pretty much eliminated from postseason competition), but you can win the entire thing in 11 games, and two teams - the Sox and Sawks - have won it in 12. That represents 7.4% of regular season games. Now, can you honestly tell me that you can crown a champion of a major sport by playing 7.4% of the regular season games? I agree that you shouldn't add more teams to the playoffs (although the one circumstance I can see is adding a wild card team and having a wild card play-in round, two best non-division winners play like a 3-game series or something along those lines). What I would like to see is a drastic shift to a 7-9-9 format. You get more postseason baseball, which generally equates to more money, you get more games to help determine a winner much better (rather than seeing a hot streak by an otherwise mediocre team), and it really doesn't take that much longer (at the very most, 6 extra games, which means it would probably be a little over a week extra). It's still a rather meager percentage of games compared to the regular season (8.6% at the least, 15.4% at the very most), but I think it's a little more telling then 5-7-7. I'm glad somebody else has this idea besides me. I actually think the playoffs should be a 9-9-9 format, but your idea works too. The 5-7-7 is ridiculous, they should AT LEAST make the first round a best of 7 as well.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 10:22 AM) Except that violent crime rates in Chicago are actually going down, and are lower than a lot of other cities. So despite the fact that we see this in the news every day, we're actually better off than a lot of places. Crime is a major issue here, but its not as bad as most people think, if you look at the numbers. So I'd say the opposite of your post is true: see this article for a perfect illustration of this. Exactly, crime is actually not nearly as bad as people think, and the rates aren't overwhelmingly high or on a major rise. It's just being more widely reported in the now 24 hour news cycle, so people think it's a lot worse. In general though, Chicago is just like any other city in that you have to be aware of where you are and when you are there. Although that's not much help for people that live in particularly affected neighborhoods.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 11:01 AM) ESPN will be very sad that this hall of fame pitchers career was cut short I seriously heard somebody on ESPN refer to him as a "future hall of famer" the other day. WTF, let the guy actually prove something first please?
-
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 08:32 AM) I'm honestly surprised that so many people have or had this problem. It seemed like such a non-issue to me. Agreed. I had heard of stage fright before, but I thought it was this like really rare thing, and I couldn't really imagine people actually having it. Clearly I was wrong.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 09:30 AM) One thing you're missing though...Bobby's fastball was moving like crazy last night, and he had control of it as well. Oh I agree, and that's the point. Giving up velocity doesn't guarantee additional movement. It works that way for a large number of guys certainly, but not all of them.

Official 2010-11 NFL Thread

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 02:46 AM) From reading his Facebook, Ochocinco appears to be really excited. Yeah I'm not sure a situation like this could work long term, but I think it's possible the Bengals could catch lightning in a bottle for a year with it, and that's all they could hope for. -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 09:05 AM) This is why there's a shift from the espn/si/sportsline/foxsports websites to independent blogs like deadspin/thebiglead, or even lesser sports sites like Yahoo!, which is quickly becoming a favorite read of mine. Good writing and interesting stories will always beat whatever ESPN fabricates to get an audience. Yep, Yahoo is my favorite sports site on the web now because it mixes official AP stories, blogs, and columns really well IMO. I also agree with the post you quoted that ESPN simply can't be treated as a news organization anymore, I almost think that's obvious at this point.

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 08:42 AM) I'll be honest, I'm struggling trying to find a way to root for LeBron and his retarded crew. Like I said even in late June and early July....had he gone to the Bulls, I'd have held my nose and rooted for him. But it'd have been REALLY hard to do because he's just a first class asshole, as are Wade and Bosh. However, I'm sure as a Heat fan, you'll find a way to look past it once the season gets here, and I don't blame you at all for it because I'd do the same thing.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 09:23 AM) They wouldn't have gone into buyer mode, but they would have tried to keep the team together going into August if they were able to get the lead down to 5 or 6. They weren't going to get the lead down to 5 or 6 anyways because they suck, and bad teams don't do things like that. The Cubs being a buyer or seller didn't mean much anyways in the sense that they don't have the money to be a buyer, and they don't had the tradeable parts to be a seller really of anybody other than Lilly (unless they plan on eating a lot of money, and I'm not sure they can even afford to do that).
