  1. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 11:19 AM) Torres comes up to start the second game of the DH, then he is demoted after the game is over. Sale is then promoted from Charlotte. Yep, it certainly appears that will be what happens.
  2. LOL the old imaginary injury, love it. I am personally more a fan of the "case of being bad" version of this than I am the "he's out of options and we don't want to lose him" one, but still awesome stuff.
  3. I'm not much of a drinker, but sometimes I read this thread and wish I was (although at other times I read it and am glad I'm not). At any rate, some really good stuff in here.
  4. Yeah, I'm not sure the situation is comparable. Turco is a lot better than Huet, and Crawford doesn't have nearly the potential that Niemi did IMO. As for Crawford's style, I think he's a little more of a hybrid than a true stand-up, but he definitely prefers the stand up style based on what I've seen, and i'm not a fan of that either.
  5. I won't believe he's retired until week 1 of the NFL regular season is over, and he did not play in it. Until then, I say this is a ploy to avoid training camp and/or get more money from the Vikings. QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 10:29 AM) It wouldn't surprise me. . . LeBron really stole his douche-thunder this offseason. He'll have to do something extraordinary to out douche LeBron.
  6. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 09:35 AM) And what has Threets done to be sent back down? He's looked pretty solid so far. Well first off, it seems like a promise was made to Sale re: being in the majors this year. Secondly, although Threets hasn't been bad, he's kind of the only choice to send down, unless you want to carry 13 pitchers.
  7. Yeah, I think even fathom would finally admit they're dead now, although really they have been for months.
  8. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 09:41 AM) A few numbers out there to go behind the talk of a page or two ago about how the team lost value almost automatically when Ricketts bought it. Heard on ESPN 1000 today that he paid 840m for the club and now it's worth 740m, so a 100m loss in value which is about 11.9%. Also heard he has to pay 30m a year on his loans for the team not to mention the money they have to dump into the shrine every year to keep it maintained... it obviously has a chance to turn around, but it's going to be a little bit to navigate through this period. I don't think most people have any idea of the financial difficulties the Ricketts/Cubs are dealing with right now. They're going to have to receive large contributions from their farm system if they want to be good again anytime soon, because they're going to cut payroll if at all possible (and who knows how much it is with as many bad, impossible to move contracts as they have).
  9. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 09:41 AM) At the very least give Castro more starts against LHP. Indeed, I cringe anytime AJ is in over Castro against a lefty starter.
  10. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 01:23 AM) If you haven't noticed, AJ doesn't exactly have many fans around here right now other than Greg. Everyone's been pulling for Castro to get as many PAs as possible. So don't think AJ's ineptitude has gone unnoticed. But at least AJ serves a purpose defensively! Kotsay serves basically no purpose, other than to cheer up Gordo when he's feeling bad about only getting laid twice the day before. Exactly. Even though AJ is an absolute abomination offensively right now (about Kotsay's equal in that regard), at least he contributes by calling a good game behind the plate for a very good pitching staff. Additionally, you're right in that most people here want Castro to get a lot more chances at the catcher position even despite that. I guess I can see why Kotsay is still on the roster now, but he absolutely has ZERO purpose or reason to be on this team once Teahen is back. But sadly, I'm sure he still will be.
  11. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 09:29 AM) Hopefully he starts contributing. Good luck.
  12. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 2, 2010 -> 09:37 PM) I don't mean that you are necessarily unattracted to them. But say they grow on you in that sense over the course of time... I completely agree with you that the attractiveness of a girl can grow on you over the course of time, I feel that's absolutely true. But, at the same time, there has to be some basic level of attraction to start talking with her in the first place in my opinion. However, I know that my standard for such basic attraction from the start is kept relatively low, because I like to give as many girls a chance as I can. I won't lie and say i'm talking with huge or ugly girls, but you can't just be picky and eliminate a ton of girls from the start, because you might miss out on something (like a really good person who can grow on you in terms of looks).
  13. QUOTE (Ranger @ Aug 2, 2010 -> 09:19 PM) I understand nobody likes Kotsy and he's everybody's favorite target, but he isn't killing them and he isn't going to cost them the division. If they lose the division, it'll be because the pitching failed. Kotsay isn't going to cost this team a bunch of games. But he could cost them a couple of games, and as we saw in 2008, that can make all of the difference in the world. He's not a major league player right now, and simply put, there is no reason for him to be on the roster once Teahen is back. It's not really even an debateable point.
  14. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 2, 2010 -> 08:28 PM) yeah, cause this is journalism Hmm, consider me confused by this post.
  15. Yeah the Hawks were a bit shaky at times against good forechecking teams last year because the goalies just couldn't come out and handle the puck, so the opposition had free reign to dump and chase, which caused Hawks players (mainly, the defense) to take a great deal of punishment, and turn the puck over in bad spots on occasion. Turco should help out A LOT with that.
  16. I never read the comments on any website ever, so I can't speak to that. I just enjoy the articles on yahoo.
  17. The only reason I couldn't really make the case that this would be a wise move even if not financially necessary (and obviously it was) is how much younger Niemi is. Besides that, I would expect Turco to put up very similar numbers to what Niemi would next year, and for not even half of the cap hit if that 1.3 report a few posts back is true. This move bothers me the least of any move made this offseason because the cap casualties should be done for the summer now, and we actually got a capable replacement right now for the guy we lost in this case. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Aug 2, 2010 -> 11:36 AM) Also, San Jose is a possible destination for Niemi. I said that was a slick move when they extended the rarely used offer sheet to Hammer. It pissed me off, but was smart by them. No doubt that caught the Hawks off guard: “[Offer sheets] don’t concern me. These guys are going to remain with the Blackhawks. We have plenty of flexibility to make things work.” — Hawks general manager Stan Bowman, June 30, 2010. Because of that 'lack of concern' they spent more on Hammer than they were planning on. If that money was available, it would have went to Niemi. I hate to give San Jose and Doug Wilson so much credit, but is it possible the Hammer offer sheet was a calculated move from the start? I don't think there is any doubt it was. The Hawks made the right move keeping Hammer and letting Niemi go though.
  18. Indeed, and I believe there are labor laws that mean you can't play more than 21 days in a row? I remember this coming up a couple of years ago, and I think the only exception to it is if you're at the end of the season and have absolutely no room for days off, and even then the players have to agree to it.
  19. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 03:49 PM) There needs to be more outrage from the fan base about Kotsay. There is no reason he should be on this roster when Teahen returns. I'm at the point where I want him to get booed for every AB at home. I will be livid if Viciedo or Lillibridge get sent down so that his inept, washed up ass can stay here and continue to provide no contribution whatsoever. In Kotsay's defense, it's not his job to make roster decisions, and he's not going to just say "send me down please". It's KW and Ozzie's fault (who knows which one decides honestly) that Kotsay is still here. It's an absolute joke too, and will be an even bigger one when Teahen returns.
  20. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 03:38 PM) That's fine and dandy but they still get to pitch in their park the rest of the way (half the time) and not on a neutral field. Indeed. But that doesn't change the fact that the runs needed to win a game in their park and at ours is way different due to how the places play, so more than total runs allowed needs to be looked at.
  21. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 03:36 PM) Maybe on paper but they've given up 1 less run than us all year and played 1 more game. Look at the ballpark they play in and the one we play in, and you'll see that such a stat actually proves we have noticeably better pitching. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 03:33 PM) I did. What does the nickname come from? Check your PM box.
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 03:32 PM) I believe "pride" is a sin, is it not? Correct. I'm hoping one of these days greg is banned, but obviously that's not up to me. Back on topic though, it was nice to win a series against Oakland with as much trouble as they tend to give us. QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 03:35 PM) Well how bout that. Bobby uses two pitches (fastball and curve though he threw one cutter as a show me) and gets a 1-2-3 inning. Its not rocket science. Exactly, pretty simple stuff.
  23. Haha the Stealth Elf, love it. He's definitely improved his approach at the plate a thousand fold this season, it's actually enjoyable to watch him hit now. I just wish we'd keep him and DFA Kotsay when the time comes for that decision.
  24. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 03:28 PM) Gotta go to church but I'd expect many personal messages in my inbox congratulating me on Bobby Freaking Jenks! Adios. As soon as you send everybody PM's apologizing for how poor he is when he sucks, we'll send you some on how good he is when he pitches well. I like you adding it "gotta go to church" as you attempt to troll it up with that post though.
  25. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 03:24 PM) I like our team better, especially considering I think we'll add Manny in about 3 weeks...but they never go away...so it will be a battle. If we add a legitimate DH with a pulse, we definitely are the favorites.
