Nice inning Robert. Not a particularly pretty game, but only one run allowed by the staff and a win for us at the end of the day. A 6-1 homestand and maintaining first place while the Twins beat up on crap will work. Hopefully, we can insert the dagger in Detroit and get some help from the Rays in the coming days.

QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 03:21 PM) That's what it came down to in 2008. Haha I didn't even think of that, well played.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 03:11 PM) If we're going to need to call up an extra pitcher in addition to Teahen, then it's gonna be hard not to send Viciedo down, even for just a 10 day stint. As I mentioned in another thread, the Sox are off tomorrow, but then have no off days for two weeks after that with a doubleheader in Detroit in a couple of days. It might be possible we just carry 13 pitchers until that next off day, and then send somebody down once the next off day arrives to carry another bat. Sending Dayan down is just unfortunate if it happens, especially with dead weight like Kotsay still here.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 03:13 PM) No one is counting the Twins out. He was responding to Greg's post basically counting us out. Yeah, counting the Twins or us out in the division right now is silly. I think it's basically a coin flip as to which of us make the playoffs as currently constructed.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 03:17 PM) If the Red Sox don't get closer soon, they may want to stop paying Big Papi. It's possible. I'm definitely a fan of the Red Sox and Dodgers losing games right now (although not today for Boston with them playing the Tigers).

I know the inevitable "how do YOU know how much Arizona wanted?" response will come to this point, but it's just a shame we gave up Hudson for Edwin Jackson. I find it almost impossible to believe that the price for him was that steep. Then again, I still don't think Huddy would have been anything more than a rotation filler 4th or 5th guy in the AL. Maybe the NL will make him look a lot better like it has so many other pitchers though.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 01:32 PM) Honestly I might guess Viciedo If I had to guess, I'd agree. And it's really unfortunate that's the case if it plays out that way.

QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 12:30 PM) I don't think it's a question of who's coming up Tuesday. That will be Torres. The question is who comes up when Torres goes back down. Would we dare carry 13 pitchers? We have a stretch from the 3rd through the 15th with no days off, and a doubleheader on the 4th after all.
-
Cowley says Torres is starting Tuesday btw.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 12:19 PM) I think there might be a different callup. I had heard on WSCR this morning that Jackson won't pitch until Wednesday, so I'm assuming somebody has to be called up to start one of the twin bill games (although we do have tomorrow off of course). Would it be Harrell again?

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 12:17 PM) What? Ramon Castro=therapist. I'm not a big fan of the nicknames you see around here often times, but that one really applies and fits for a few reasons.

QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 12:13 PM) The lefty PH thing... And the fact that he hit .351 in August/September last year will be the excuses. I'm not saying I agree with the decision to keep Kotsay over Viciedo in the short term, I'm just suggesting it's not as illogical as some people are going to try to make it look if it does happen. But if it does, I'm sure we'll be treated to the traditional barrage of "Worst decision in the history of baseball... Kenny and Ozzie should be fired NOW" posts that take place when unpopular moves are made. That mirage in meaningless games has hurt the team this year a great deal, a classic example of that while some games are meaingless, not everything that happens in them is. As for your other points, if they call up Torres and send down Viciedo for the doubleheader, I won't lose my mind yet because you can just call Dayan back up after the game since Torres won't be staying (unless I'm missing something). But if Teahen comes back and Kotsay is kept, a lot of people will lose their mind, and understandably so. There is no excuse for Kotsay to still be here once Teahen is back.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 09:23 AM) I never wish injury upon a player but I wouldn't shed a tear if Kotsay pulled up lame in his next game. I'm not going to say I wish an injury upon a guy because I'm matured to the point where I would never do that again, but it would be best for the organization if he did get injured, particularly once Teahen is back. And i'm not even kidding.
-
I really don't hate Kotsay that much, seems like a nice enough guy. I hate the way the organization is handling a washed up player who belongs in the minors.
-
Yeah I'm sure the lefty PH thing is an excuse the team would use that Kotsay is still here. But we play in the American League so pinch hitters really don't mean anything, and who would Ozzie even PH Kotsay for? This all not even pointing out the fact that Kotsay can't hit, so that kind of kills the idea of having him as a pinch hitter.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 11:32 AM) Say Ozzie really uses Viciedo a lot up until the time that Teahen comes off the DL, and he maintains his current BA and shows that he belongs in the majors. Does anyone think there is a possibility that Dayan stays? I do think there is a slight chance that Ozzie will be forced to keep him if Viciedo shows that he can hit righties effectively. The only thing is, we never see him hitting against righties. Hopefully that changes. If Viciedo keeps hitting, he has to stay and Kotsay has to go when Teahen comes back. I don't have a great deal of confidence that is what will actually happen if he keeps hitting (Kotsay just won't go away no matter how much he sucks), but it's what should happen. Once Teahen comes back, there is no no reason or excuse for Kotsay to be on the roster.
-
We had a kid that can clearly hit the ball hard, particularly against lefties. He's going to have to be a little more patient to survive though IMO. He doesn't need to be Kevin Youkilis up there, but a walk here and there is essential. But to be that young and be able to hit major league pitchers that hard, he has a ton of potential.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 10:43 PM) Yeah, good post. That is about right. I know this doesn't belong in this thread. But I'm pissed. The Twins have won 7 freaking games in a row. I'm sick of them. They are too good every single year only to suck in the playoffs. They're beating up on crap right now, just like we are. That's the schedule. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 04:43 PM) The only flaw is that it involves Mark Kotsay losing at-bats, which won't happen. Haha not only does the plan involve Kotsay losing at bats, it involves him being designated for assignment. Which is why it'll really never happen. -

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 04:39 PM) I am in favor of the platoon. I'm more in favor of Carlos DHing full time though. Well in my scenario, you can DH Carlos and put Teahen in RF on days he plays (which is the majority of the time since he plays against righties). That's the best you can do with keeping Carlos out of the field for the rest of this year, he has to be out there against lefties. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 04:32 PM) I wouldn't want a straight platoon cause Teahen will get way too many at bats. Viciedo is a much better option. Teahen I still think is buzzkill. I've seen strong evidence to tell me the pimp can crush lefties. And Mark has an .820 OPS against righties this year. -

I'd personally like to see Teahen and Viciedo platoon at DH with Omar at 3rd when Mark comes back. If you want to put Mark in RF and give CQ some DH appearances to try to keep him healthy on days righties pitch, I'm fine with that since Teahen can't be any worse than Carlos out there. Anything like that works. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 04:26 PM) True, but Kotsay is beloved in the clubhouse. He won't be DFA'd. We have to pray Lilly is sent down. I know the clubhouse is important, but Kotsay sucks and his position there shouldn't matter. -

When does Teahen come back again? If Kotsay is DFA'd when that happens and Viciedo is on the team, at least I'd have reason to think our team has some semblance of logic about it's everyday players.
