  1. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 12:26 PM) Right, and I do defend their right to do that. My complaint is that both sides talk out of their ass about this issue. They claim it's all about the fans and making the fans experience better, or the game better, or whatever, but it's not about that. If it was, tickets wouldn't be as expensive as they are (and wouldn't continue to rise). Ahh but they are lying when they claim it's all about the fans. I mean, sure, SOME of it is about the fans, because they are a big part of what drives the machine. But at the end of the day, it's about whatever makes the most money. The teams would let every seat in the stadium be filled by corporations paying top dollar for them if they could.
  2. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 11:18 AM) Yeah, I get that the NFL isn't hurting for fans, but that doesn't mean it's not s***ty that prices continue to go up and up. Supply and demand my friend, capitalism at it's finest. As a guy who appeares to be republican in the posts I've seen, I would think you of all people would defend such a concept.
  3. QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 09:43 AM) People would probably kill for Papelbon and he has more blown saves, allowed 6 HR's, and has only struck out 32 in 39 innings. BTW, not that it's a big deal, but Thornton has as many blown save as Jenks in only 7 oppurtunities. So Jenks is better than a guy with an ERA 2 runs lower and a WHIP half a baserunner lower because Ozzie saved him from having a 3rd blown save Sunday by taking him out? And the only place where blown saves is a worse stat than with closers is with non closers.
  4. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 12:26 AM) There seems to be a lot of f***ing collusion going on in the NBA right now. That's because there is. The NBA is awesome if you like wrestling, and if that's the cup of tea of anybody here, go ahead and enjoy. But a lot of people are getting tired of the fact that the entire league seems colluted and scripted right now. I've really had a hard time watching NBA games not involving the Bulls already in recent years, and it'll only be worse in 2010-2011.
  5. Yeah I also tend to side with the players on a lot of the issues in this case, because the NFL is a BRUTAL game. The league really does need a rookie wage scale, but even there I think the players should be allowed to become free agents after 3 years to kind of balance that out so proven ones can get a deserved pay raise sooner. The NFL is the biggest cash cow in sports by a mile, and the players can't even get guaranteed contracts? I know the injury rate is also highest in this league, but that seems kind of sketchy to me. The owners are just stuck with their heads in the clouds right now it seems, and that's why a long lockout is likely, unless said heads are removed from said clouds.
  6. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 09:27 AM) So he has 3 blown saves. He hasnt been good this year, but he's not the awful pitcher that everyone is saying because they are upset after a loss that most people already thought we would lose. There is no perfect stat for a closer, but saves and blown saves are about as close as you can get. A closer can have a high ERA but be 100% on saves and still be very effective. A closer can have a high ERA and WHIP and a good save percentage, but all that means is he's due for a stretch where it catches up to him, like it certainly appears Jenks is now in the midst of. When you have JJ Putz and Matt Thornton on your team, things like this have to be stopped before they get too ugly. You can't just DFA Jenks because we need him, but you can't trust a guy with his numbers as closer. Put him in a different spot and hope he contributes, it's all you can do really.
  7. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 12:59 AM) How do you guys explain Wagner blowing a 2 run lead tonight? What closers are automatic these days? Tell me those closers. Blown saves happen. Even Andrew Bailey, who has an ERA in the mid 1's and a WHIP just under 1, has 3 of them. The problem is, people use this largely BS stat to defend Bobby Jenks. Bobby Jenks shouldn't be the closer because he has an ERA over 5 and a WHIP over 1.5 and that means he's a bad pitcher, particularly considering he's a reliever. And bad pitchers can't be closers, especially when you have better choices, and we have WAY better ones. And chw42, I thought Jenks was going to get non-tendered in the off-season no matter what. He's just making the decision that much easier though.
  8. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 09:08 AM) In 2005, Bobby blew 2 saves out of 8 in 39 IP. In 2010 Booby has blown 2 saves in 22 attempts in 35IP. He's actually been a better closer this year. The closer is designed to get saves correct? He's on pace to blow about 4 saves this year, which is his career avg just about. I don't even know where to begin with this post. By this bizarre logic, Bobby has been just as good as Mariano Rivera, and slightly better than Andrew Bailey this year. That's not a world I want to live in. The man has an ERA over 5 and a WHIP over 1 and a half, and that's including an absolutely dominant June. He is not good enough to close, and he's really not good enough to close on a team with JJ Putz and Matt Thornton. The hope is you put him somewhere else and he finds something close to June form again, but he doesn't have the long term consistency to be trusted as closer again.
  9. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 12:27 AM) Haha, I wasn't directing that to you, just at the board in general since that will be the response instead of wanting him to fix it. Then what explains the 5 weeks or so when he was awesome? Thats why it doesn't make sense. So he was due for about 6 weeks and its finally hitting now? You can't stretch it that far The guy had a period of over a month in which he was awesome in a season that's barely more than 90 games old, and his numbers STILL absolutely suck. Just think about useless he's been outside of that period of excellence. Now, that period is still there, and we can hope he finds that success again. He just can't be allowed to attempt to in the closers role when we have two great options for it.
  10. As long as Jenks isn't on the committee, I'm all for it. EDIT: Ed Walsh beat me to it. But I'm with him.
  11. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 12:17 AM) Then you have to move someone up to take Putz's place and pray we don't lose games in the 7th instead of 9th. I'm a fan of common sense, so wishing they DFA "that f***ing fatass" is idiotic to me. You do what you did earlier in the year, give him a break, slowly work him back in and hope he finds it again. We need him to be June/July Bobby or hope every pitcher goes at least 7 from here out. And that "he was due" is still BS. He's had those numbers all season, it makes no difference. I don't care that he's fat! His weight has nothing to do with the fact he sucks, and can't be allowed to close. I'd rather worry about losing a game in the 7th when one of our really good starters might still be in the game, than worry about losing it in the 9th when there is no time left to recover. And he was due is still right. If you give up a ton of baserunners but aren't blowing saves, common sense tells you that eventually such good fortune will run out. Lots of baserunners and high ERA=not good pitcher, and not good pitcher when he's a closer=blown saves.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 12:15 AM) with Santos having a hard time fooling anyone, suddenly the 6th-7th innings become scary. Well we're going to need the starting pitching to carry us, but we knew that already. The bullpen depth we all thought we had is now questionable at best though, I will say that. Moving Putz to closer basically means we have one reliable setup man right now.
  13. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 12:09 AM) ehh you can do that for a s*** load of games at the end of the season for every team True, you usually don't get two in 4 days like this though. But to your point, if we rid ourselves of the Jenks problem in the closers role, HOPEFULLY we can minimize the giveaway games. As of now, we don't have anymore of those than other teams. But if Jenks is left in as closer, that will change. Because as I said after Sunday's games, the numbers say he's due to blow several in a short period of time.
  14. Let's just hope these 2 games aren't looked back upon in early October after a close defeat in the race. As far as I'm concerned, Bobby can't be allowed to close another game this season. We have two good options in JJ and Matt, go with them.
  15. Alright, friends of Jenks, defend the man now. Just blew a game without any trouble against one of the worst offensive teams in recent memory, and the only out was given to him. Time to make JJ or Thornton the closer. I don't care who, as long as it's not Jenks.
  16. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 10:10 PM) To get back to the level they want to be at, yes, they need total salary relief. Seabrook needs a new deal and will probably see his cap hit go from 3.5 to around 5, and the same can basically be said about Sharp, since both have been identified as part of the core. There is also no long term plan in net right now, which will need to be addressed. It would also be nice for them to have a little wiggle room to add a veteran if needed. Getting that seven million off the books long term will make Stan's life a lot easier. Yeah they definitely need to keep Brent and Sharp. I think it's possible at some point that Hossa is moved if they can't do anything about Campbell, as much as it pains me to say it. I think that's something more along the lines of happening next summer though. One thing is for sure: if they can't move Brian, they're going to have to make a significant move that they really don't want to. Maybe they can put it off this summer, but they can't put it off any longer than that.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 20, 2010 -> 11:00 PM) http://www.northsidebaseball.com/ God that site is a weird place. A mixture of typical stupid Cubs fans, and numbers freaks who think watching the game is pointless because the numbers can literally explain everything.
  18. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 07:32 PM) The Hawks have the list, and Campbell can change any of the eight teams at any time. Plus, even if Flordia wasn't on the list, he could still accept a trade to the Panthers if he wanted. The only creative way I could see Campbell getting moved to FLA is if the Hawks packaged Campbell with the rights to Niemi, and took Vokoun back. Vokoun has a cap hit of 5.7, but is a free agent at the end of the year. Flordia gets an overpriced but useful D-man and a goaltender they may want to build around, and the Hawks get out of the financial burden they are in with Campbell and Huet. I just don't see a way where the Hawks can make a trade with Campbell and get total salary relief. It's just too bad of a contract. Agreed with the bolded, but they don't need total salary relief right now, only partial. And to your point earlier in the post, I think they can be creative and find a deal to get that.
  19. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 03:55 PM) This past weekend I went out with a stripper (ok, you're probably thinking WTF there must be a long story involved - the answer is yes, there is) and she introduces me to a friend at the bar, also a stripper but both dressed normally since they weren't at work. Stripper #2 is really friendly. Stripper #1 leans over to me and says "yeah, she is really cool and a sweetheart, but don't drink anything after her." lol. Don't gotta tell me twice. She texts me at the table and says rumor has it she has HIV. I know you can't really get HIV from drinking out of the same cup as someone (at least I'm pretty sure that's how I remember), but still... yeesh. This REALLY should be it's own thread.
  20. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 03:46 PM) Twins win. Thome had 4 plate appearances and no official ABs. Thank goodness we're such a good team at the DH spot. It's not like letting him go up there instead of keeping him was a poor decision.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 03:41 PM) Dude, Green. I saw the green, but misread the intent of it apparently. Sorry about that, I'll have to take my sarcasm detector into the shop for some new batteries it appears.
  22. QUOTE (girlslikebaseballtoo#26 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 03:37 PM) HAHA yeah right! Chase is treated very well. He hears stories from the other guys about different clubs and knows he's got it pretty good! They can't be allowing him to be in the news 'cause his fiancee beat a girl senseless though ..that probably would not be good!! LOL Exactly, and then the blogs and such would all be making fun of you, and that'd be no good.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 03:33 PM) Because those White Sox, they're just jerks. Right Chase? Eh? I'm just saying Chase wouldn't want somebody hacking into his account and posting stupid crap. If that happens and it ends up on deadspin, he looks dumb even though he didn't do anything. That's what I mean by "being careful".
  24. QUOTE (girlslikebaseballtoo#26 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 03:26 PM) I'm trying to ease it back in the other direction!! haha ...SHE'S MEAN I TELL YA!! And she would cause injury to anyone who was messing with her only big sister!! ANYONE ...so you all better be nice to me! That's good though, she has your back. I feel bad for your facebook drama though, I used to see it all the time back when I posted on there more frequently. It's quite annoying, and as you mentioned, you have to be especially careful when taking Chase into account due to who employs him.
  25. Wow at the turn in this thread.....
