Wow that's an absolute disaster for UNC if Austin is suspended. If any or all of the other guys mentioned there are suspended, just make it that much worse. And if a couple to several others schools are involved, get your popcorn ready. I guess a South Carolina guy might be involved in the UNC stuff too, oddly enough. Florida can kiss any statistical reference or credit for the Sugar Bowl goodbye if the Pouncey thing is true too, and you'd think 100 grand will get even more punishment than that. -
Somewhat OT, but I bring it up since Balta posted a link a few posts ago referring to the story: I'm a bit bewildered as to why anybody is surprised that the idea of a mosque (although it sounds more like a center than a mosque) in the shadows of ground zero is controversial. I think a group certainly has the right to put a mosque/center wherever it chooses, but putting one in that spot is a really sticky situation for a lot of people to deal with, regardless of how unfortunate that might be.

QUOTE (T R U @ Jul 19, 2010 -> 01:08 PM) Well, you can think whatever you'd like about it.. I don't mind it. Regardless of if that's your goal, you play devil's advocate, which is good for discussion.

Ahh I was just about to post this as well, as you're right about this being the type of work we probably won't see once newspapers are gone. Reading this made me wonder if the financial situation in our country is actually worse than we're led to believe, since as the article points out, the true cost of the security programs in the hidden world is unknown. At the very minimum, this seems like another gigantic obstacle in the way of trying to ever have a reasonable budget in our country. I guess that's the cost of "keeping America safe", even if we're not sure just how safe it's keeping us.

QUOTE (T R U @ Jul 19, 2010 -> 02:40 AM) Care to name "everybody"? LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Barry Bonds......? And that's LeBron and Wade NEWLY added to everyone's "hate" list.. and the only reason they are there is because.. 1. Bulls fans who are upset LeBron didn't pick Chicago 2. Basketball fans who are upset that the Heat will be the best team in the league for the foreseeable future Like I give a s*** what the people on this board think of me or my posts, I only like maybe 5 people out of the thousands that post here.. so no, its not to just get a rise out of everyone.. I mean what I say 100% I love everybody that people hate because they are usually the best.. I.E. LeBron, Bonds, Etc. So anyways, who else do I love that everyone hates? I find this post fascinating because in it, you are attempting to prove you aren't trying to just get a rise out of people. But you actually prove that, indeed, you are just trying to get a rise out of people. The one point you've made I'll give you is that Bulls fans would have got over LeBron being a dick had he come to the Bulls. But he'd still be hated everywhere else and still be a dick had he come to the Bulls after handling things the way he did.

Balta, I don't know much (if anything) about the tea party, but you just posting "lol" twice to 2k5 saying it appeals to moderates rather than pointing out actual reasons why what he says is false kind of makes me wonder if he has a point.

I don't think we can ditch Jenks as closer yet, he's still 20 for 22 in saves and that's still very good. However, the Todd Jones and Joe Borowski point lostfan made is fair when you consider yes his save percentage is great, but he has an ERA in the high 4's and a WHIP over 1 and a half, and both of those just aren't good enough for a closer. But making Jenks anything other than closer weakens our pen because I don't think he's capable of doing anything other than closing. So I guess to make a long story short, I say keep Jenks as closer, but make the leash short because the numbers say that while he deserves to stay closer since he's saved over 90 percent of his chances, he could be due to blow several games, and if such a streak of blown saves starts, intervetion is needed rather quickly. I can understand the anger though, as all blown saves are not created equally. A blown save when you're up 1 against a non divisional opponent isn't equal to blowing a 3 run lead against the Twins in a game that would have given us a road series split, for instance.

Every Cubs victory between now and July 31st is a victory for the status quo. So as far as I'm concerned, let them win and thus be stupid at the deadline and not dump anybody they can. Heck, maybe they can even save Jim Hendry's job!

QUOTE (Chi Town Sox @ Jul 16, 2010 -> 09:11 AM) I wouldn't bring David Kahn into this! There are some strong supporters out there! Yeah, one of the many ways this is an interesting thread in that he keeps doing bizarre stuff, and people keep supporting it in here. Awesome David Kahn interview, btw:

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 16, 2010 -> 01:04 AM) also, i recommend dont stop But the question is, do you recommend get it, get it?

We basically gave the Twins 6 free runs in their own ballpark and still won. Absolutely amazing how hot this team is right now, and what a job by Jenks tonight. The one thing that still hurts even though we won is the bullpen had to throw a ton of high stress pitches tonight, so it'd be nice if we can come out and win an easy one tomorrow. Still, an outstanding win overall tonight.

2 questions ptatc (and if you've answered either/both, my apologies): 1. Are you concerned about Peavy long term with his mechanics? 2. Apparently, the surgery he had is one that hasn't been done on a pitcher before. Is that a major concern?

Unga=bye bye Garrett Wolfe. At least IMO. -
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 15, 2010 -> 12:43 PM) I meant specifics that only whitesoxfan101 would know. That's what I meant, since you said multiply what we think about him by 10. I'm not sure I'd go as far as to say I have information that "nobody else knows", because as I mentioned, just about everybody in Miami knows about it and does a great job hiding it. Which is the main reason most people thought Dwyane was still a good guy until he kind of showed his true con man colors during the FA stuff. I will say that about 95 percent of the rumors that have leaked out about him (only to be covered up by people in Miami and at the NBA offices and ESPN) are accurate or very close to it.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 15, 2010 -> 12:11 PM) Not sure I agree with the 1st part but definitely agree that we don't want Lilly. Well I mean if he sucks again at Seattle, I'd be concerned about Hudson. But no need to panic when you have 4 starters pitching as well as our top 4 are. I think whether or not we trade for another SP will come down right to the deadline on the 31st. We'll do everything we can to give Hudson a chance because I think we're more interested in using our resources on a bat.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 15, 2010 -> 12:08 PM) Is it time to panic if Hudson lays another egg at Seattle? No, and even if it were, I don't want Ted Lilly.
-
No, and especially not in our ballpark. He'd be a better fit for an NL team, although he'd actually be an adequate fit for the Twins in their ballpark. But for us, no no no.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 15, 2010 -> 09:31 AM) You can see it all in how Lebron wants to go join Wade's South Beach party. Does anyone even realize that the Miami arena isn't in the South Beach area? It's downtown. Yep right on Biscayne Bay, although I think everything is closer than you realize. Micky Arison, the Heat owner, also owns Carnival Cruise Lines, and anybody who has been on such a cruise like myself knows you have a pretty good look at the arena as you leave the Port of Miami, which is probably only a mile, maybe two away from the AAA right in the middle of the Bay. South Beach isn't actually in Miami either, it's in Miami Beach, although a quick drive across one of the causeways right by the arena and you're on South Beach. It's probably only about a 5 mile drive too, so even with typically disasterous Miami traffic, that's no problem. Star Island is right in the water in between South Beach and the arena too (just to either the north or south of the Port, can't remember which direction honestly, but it's all right there). It's quite the recruiting setup for players.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 15, 2010 -> 08:11 AM) If the stuff about his private life/kids hasn't strongly suggested "This isn't a good guy" to you, and the way the Lebron shenanigoats went down hasn't added on to that, then I'm not sure what it'll take to convince you. Exactly. I do have sources though, although you don't really need them to know all of that about Wade. The con man that is Dwyane Wade is kind of an open book down there, but people choose to ignore it because he's a great player, as well as the fact he covers for himself well by attaching to some positive stuff done in the community down there.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 11:43 PM) The NBA and Miami media sure swept under the rugs some reports about Wade's womanizing and drug use from his former business partner. Let me tell you, whatever you've heard about Dwyane Wade, multiply it times 5 (maybe even 10) and only then do you have the real story. Classic con man and has been for years, but now the whole world knows it. He's a heck of a player and has built a heck of a basketball team around himself though, I'll give him that. But just a bad guy.

QUOTE (kev211 @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 04:26 PM) Anyone who doesn't call it bags is wrong. This. Still a funny thread though.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 11:34 PM) And women are inherently evil creatures. I think it could be argued rather easily that men and women are both inherently evil creatures. Women are just a little smarter about it, for the most part, which pisses us off.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 07:31 PM) Gee, I have an idea... STOP SPENDING. That almost seems unrealistic at this point since nobody stands for that right now.

QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 06:07 PM) I know so many people hated it. This guy was going to be our savior. I was sad to see Miguel Olivo leave at the time. That's where I was on it. The Mark Kotsay comparisons I kept reading scared me enough on Reed that I didn't mind giving him up. I was a little upset they gave up Olivo since he was young, talented, and we didn't really have a replacement for him. But I was just pumped to get a proven stud like Garcia, so I didn't really even mind that much. We have no evidence of that on the boards though since that trade was so long ago that I wasn't even a member here yet.
