QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 20, 2010 -> 03:14 PM) eh, in a dense city something two blocks away is completely unrelated. Put yourself in the position of actually walking in the city, in the middle of hundreds of buildings, you probably wouldn't even put 2 and 2 together. Mmm I suppose that's true. I wouldn't put two and two together anyways though, I don't see a mosque and think terrorism personally.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jul 20, 2010 -> 02:31 PM) I know there are a few loopholes, but wouldn't he have to be on the roster before September 1st so he could pitch in any potential playoff series? It wouldn't make a ton of sense to rush him, have him come up September 1st be effective, at least better than Threets or Williams, and then the Sox make the playoffs and can't use him I believe we could have Threets come down with an imaginary injury and replace him with Sale in such a scenario.

The only guys I could see them being able to move are Lilly (who I think they will deal) and maybe Derrek Lee. They really don't have anybody else with value right now, all things considered, and even Lilly and Lee wouldn't bring back much of anything. The exception to this comment is if they are willing to eat a lot of money, but I really doubt it.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 20, 2010 -> 02:30 PM) On that one, I think we can almost guarantee that the higher ups saw the video and said "This person needs to be gone right now". It's a damn inflammatory video if taken fully at face value. Well yeah, but look how quickly the context of it has come into question. I think the administration could have shown a little restraint here, it's not like they aren't going to be attacked by the Glenn Beck's of the world regardless in this case.
-
If that is true, shame on the administration for being more interested in covering their own asses than finding out, you know, what actually happened.
-
I don't understand why she would resign if that's the case. Just take the firing instead, so that if it comes out that you're right and the video is out of context, you play a much better victim.
-
It looks that way, but I think Lou would have been fired already if that were in the plans. It's too late to salvage the season now, so they might as well let him ride peacefully into the sunset.
-
I agree on wanting to see the whole video, but I would have even had the conspiracy allegations not been out there.
-
Well since she clearly didn't do anything wrong and should be nominated for sainthood due to losing her job to a vast right wing conspiracy, let's hope she gets her job back tomorrow morning.
-
Yeah Atlanta and Pittsburgh are not good for hitters. And the NL to AL numbers downsize tends to hit pitchers much more than it does hitters as far as I'm aware of.

You can be a racist without oppressing anybody.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 20, 2010 -> 01:54 PM) It's also 2 blocks away. But the main point is the I would also be as annoyed as this man/woman-new-yorker telling them what to be offended about. Well 2 blocks is nothing in terms of distance, and I think the people telling the NYC folks how to feel would be making the same hissy fit if it were 6 or 8 blocks away because they seem to have no problem with putting their noses in the business of other people anyways.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 20, 2010 -> 01:45 PM) Anyone want to give odds on Sandberg being his replacement? Only way I can see him not being the replacement is if they convince Joe Girardi to come manage his boyhood team. But he'd have to be nuts to leave the Yankees to manage the Cubs, even if he grew up loving them.

The 2006 Sox collapse was caused by the collapse of the offense, as well as the general suckitude of our pitching staff (particularly our bullpen). But I tend to side with Balta in the sense that I feel it's fair to say Mack's defense in CF lost that team several games. And considering we finished 5 out of the playoffs IIRC, that's a big thing. Mack actually had a good offensive year that season too, and it's not his fault Ozzie kept putting him out there even though he sucked at playing CF, so I always felt kind of bad for him though.

The middle paragraph in there is a bit of a stretch since it seems to compare an oil spill and urban sprawl to 9/11, but I agree it's a local issue, and as I said in the last post, I think that the group attempting to build the mosque/community center/whatever you want to call it in that spot absolutely has the right to do so. I'm just saying people shouldn't be surprised that there are people who are not thrilled with the idea. Unfortunately, one of the first things a lot of people still think of when they hear mosque or muslim is terrorism. I actually find that to be very sad, but a lot of people are still at that place mentally.

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jul 20, 2010 -> 12:28 PM) Agree and Disagree. The Cavs were better when he was off the floor, but that's due to two reasons. One is the Cavs love to push the ball because they cannot run any efficient halfcourt sets. The only thing they knew how to do was give the ball to LeBron and let him create by driving and getting to the FT. With Shaq, that's all they did as well when he was on the floor and they never really moved without the ball in the halfcourt. Shaq was still getting opposing centers in early foul trouble and he was still a decent option on the floor. I'd certainly thinking about bringing him in. Him and Boozer would flat out handle Bosh and whoever else you throw next to him. The bold is my issue. I think the Bulls will be able to run very solid halfcourt sets this year, and Shaq could fit in there. But even with Thibs defense first mindset, this is a team built to run a lot of fast break, and Shaq might be left in the dust yet again on such a squad.

An interesting story on Marlon Byrd and his very close connection to infamous BALCO druglord Victor Conte. Included inside the story is a link to another interesting story on the two from a little over a year ago. Makes you say hmm at the very least. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AoUO...onteagain071910

The ideas given at the beginning of the thread to hold the person responsible are good, but I tend to agree with fathom's idea of deactivating the account for a while. Not only could the person do something stupid that gets Chase infamous on deadspin or whatever even though Chase himself didn't do it, but it could also get him in trouble with the White Sox organization. Better safe than sorry, and Chase could always just make a new facebook page and keep it hidden from the hacker with privacy settings and such.

Kenny always whines about how difficult the market is for making trades this time of year. And any time we're in the race, he always says he has to be careful in only making a potential move if it makes us a lot better and doesn't disrupt chemistry. So I don't take what he's saying to mean much since it's been said by him before and will be said again.
-
I think this deal is going to get done. It might take all the way until the 31st, but it just makes too much sense for both sides for something not to occur. Based on the minor league price we're going to have to pay though from our already weak system, I think if we make this deal and also call up Sale, our farm teams might as well close up shop for the year. Also, regardless of what is being said, I wouldn't be shocked if we were still willing to give up Hudson in this deal too. Maybe that's part of why I think it'll get done though, and I certainly could be wrong.
-
I honestly have no idea what I'd think if the Bulls signed Shaq. I'd lean towards being against it though because he looked so terrible in Cleveland last year, they were better when he wasn't on the floor.
-
17 years is ridiculous, the length of contracts needs to be addresssed in the next CBA IMO. Although, to be fair, Ilya is signed until he's 44 and Hossa until he's 42, so the Devils aren't the only team taking advantage of the loophole. But even with the Hawks being one of the teams that benefitted from the loophole, I'd still like to see it gone. Anyways, I'm glad he stayed in the east and with New Jersey though. He takes up a lot of payroll resources, but the Kings are going to be enough of an issue as it is, let alone had they added a much needed offensive stud like Kovalchuk to their squad.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 19, 2010 -> 05:35 PM) also I didn't think the article took a negative tone on people in the business, just that the system itself needs to be refocused. Agreed, the article seems more interested in the problems of the system. I don't think it has a problem with the people themselves.
-
Well, you can't accuse the Bulls of not being deep enough. And they still have enough cash to add another decent guy or two. I can't see them overcoming the Heat anytime soon, but I think the Bulls are setup to be competitive with anybody else in the conference in the coming years.

The optimism of Cubs fans will always amaze me. They're 10.5 out of first place and alone in 4th (with two good teams at the top of the division), yet there is a contingent of their blind loyalists who are excited because they beat up on the awful Diamondbacks and the mightily struggling Phillies recently. How can any fans be so positive, let alone fans of a team that has a stretch of futility like they do? I'll never get it. Oh, and Carlos Silva: welcome back to being Carlos Silva.
