Wow I didn't see that. So Alpha, you think the muslim building is being put 2 blocks from the WTC as a celebration and remembrance of how proud they are of 9/11?

I don't think people "freak out" over Bobby giving up baserunners and getting saves. I just think they realize that a guy with a WHIP in the mid 1's as closer is a dangerous propsition that could go horribly wrong at some point soon. Also, are some of the fat Bobby supporters fat themselves and taking the fat criticism personally? I honestly wonder that sometimes reading these posts, people just love bringing up his weight. I personally don't care about his weight, I don't think it affects his pitching.

Take it FWIW, but the Yahoo NHL blogger (who is in a bad mood today because he's a Devils fan) seems to think it's possible the Hawks and Panthers come to a deal on Campbell eventually as he "heard it from a Chicago source".

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 02:10 PM) Oh I think a lot hate Jenks no matter what. They simply tolerate him when he gets the save. So I am the opposite and support him. How about this: support him when he's good, criticize him when he's bad. Be confident in him when the numbers say to be, and be concerned about him when the numbers say to be.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 01:46 PM) Let's face it, some people are going to hate Jenks no matter what. Very few of us love him no matter what. I think he's been a very good baseball player for the White Sox and remains a very good closer. I think my statement is WAY closer to reality than those who say he sucks and want to have his arm fall off like one guy said after he blew the last save. Loving a baseball player no matter what is just as stupid as hating one no matter what (and I'm not sure anybody here hates a player no matter what).

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 01:05 PM) You could also teach that Condom use can be quite effective, for example. Who the heck doesn't know that already? It seems like you're just assuming people are idiots. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 12:43 PM) where testing facilities are, where you can go for help if you have AIDS, pass out free protection, offer counseling etc. A big part of the battle is getting people tested. Now this I agree with.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 12:29 PM) Anyway, now that Beck's on board with this being an unjust firing, isn't it time for you guys to flip-flop so that you can start attacking the administration and I start defending them somehow? I already told you yesterday the administration pretty clearly jumped the gun on this one. I'm not going to "attack" them, but I think that's a hard point to argue.

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 12:57 PM) Also, is it worth noting to the detractors that even with the blowup, Jenks' ERA since June 1st is 3.00 and his WHIP is 1.00, with nearly a 5.00 K/BB? Okay, so he had a great June. He's not the only guy on our team that did. Doesn't change the fact that it's understandable and logical to be concerned about him, and it doesn't change the fact that saying he has one blown save is mega deceptive. Also, I'm not sure who started the "well if we take out his three crap outings, he'd be great" nonsense, but it is just that. Relief pitchers are men who live in a world of small sample sizes, that's part of why it's so tricky to build a good bullpen. There are a lot of them who would be awesome if you just took out the few games they particularly sucked in.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 12:31 PM) Either way, it's interesting that they can throw one out and not throw the other out if there's no hard and fast rule to follow. Well that's the issue, there is no specific rule. So I'm a little surprised they said no to the deal, although I get them trying to say enough is enough. But the NHLPA is appealing this, and I'm guessing the arbitration ruling will say the deal has to be allowed because other crazy deals have been allowed, even if they weren't quite this crazy. Or maybe everybody can compromise and a 14 year deal can be agreed to. A cap on deal years won't really fix this, because even if you cap deals length at 8 or 10 years, guys will still sign front loaded deals with minimal money the last few years to minimize the cap hit anyways. There is a way to fix it though IMO. For instance, if you have a vet under age 35 sign a 10 year, 60 million deal if the cap on years is 10, he can just take 9.5 million the first 6 years and then 750 k the last 4 to minimize the cap hit and get paid, as it's unlikely he'd play the last 4 years anyways. If you put in a rule that each year of the deal must pay out a certain percentage of the deal's average annual value though, you could probably kill this. For the above deal, let's say that percentage is 75, so then each year must pay out at least 4.5 million dollars. That kills signing a guy forever. Or you could just make the cap hit for each year the salary that year, but I like my idea better.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 20, 2010 -> 10:58 PM) They got caught with their pants down with the Hossa deal, they weren't going to let it happen again. I think the Hossa deal was right on the line of legal, which is why it was controversial, but ended up being allowed, although I could have understood why it wasn't had it not been. But the Kovalchuk deal crossed that line IMO. A few key differences to keep in mind: 1. The Kovalchuk deal is 5 years longer. Yes, I know Ilya is younger, but a 12 year deal is not unprecedented, even if a bit crazy. 17 years is on a whole new level. 2. Even in the "BS" years of the Hossa deal (the last 4), he makes a million dollars. The Kovalchuk deal has 6 BS years, 5 in which he only makes 550 k, and another in which he only makes 3/4 of a million. 3. In the Hossa deal, he makes 7.9 the first 7 years, drops to 4 the 8th year (which will probably be an overpay for him by then), then you have the 4 years of a millon each. Which that's tricky, his yearly salary never strays THAT far over the cap hit. Kovalchuk is all over the map, and at times his yearly salary is WAY over the cap hit. He has 6 million the first two years, then 11.5 for 5, then a 10.5, then 8.5, 6.5, 3.5, then the sub million half a dozen years I mentioned. To me, those two deals are a lot different. One is tricky (and not all that far off from the Zetterburg and Franzen deals in Detroit, which I'm ok with too even thought the Wings are a rival of course), the other is beyond that IMO.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 10:31 AM) 101, that's why I bring up this weekend. If they go out and sweep Cards and make up 3 games on them, they could then point to our run and decide to go for it. Let them go for it. Maybe they'll give up some of their young talent to acquire something too. They still aren't making the playoffs this year, and it'd hurt them even more long term.
-
I'm not sure there is much of a decision to be made in the next 10 days for them, the only moveable parts they have and are willing to deal are Lilly and maybe Lee it appears. The Reds and Cardinals are playing good ball too, and the Cubs are still like 10 under. I don't see how anybody can even imagine them coming close to playing 11 games better than the Cardinals and Reds in their last 68 games or whatever it is. I know you could bring up our run, but they don't have the bullpen, defense, or favorable schedule that we did/do. I'm assuming BP would have their playoff chances at less than half of 1 percent, and that's probably about right.

I find it absolutely shocking that so many people are still that ignorant as to how AIDS is transmitted.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 20, 2010 -> 07:12 PM) The thing is Hendry was sitting right next to him, he couldnt just say I don't know if I will keep him around next year. He had to say what he did, but many people have said that before and changed their mind when it came down to it. With all the bad money on the roster right now, I see no way Hendry comes back. Well you may be right, but Ricketts really screwed the pooch if you are. He could have rather easily went the political route and talked without saying anything on Hendry, even with him right there, but instead he basically said he'll be back next year. And fathom, serious question, not me being sarcastic or poking fun at all: do you still think the Cubs can rally and get legitimately back into the race?

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 08:05 AM) I think its pretty simple. NYC has a lot of muslims living in it, from many countries and cultures. People see them every day, they are part of the fabric. So, despite 9/11, New Yorkers are probably a lot more capable of understanding the difference between radicals/terrorists and every-day Muslims than, say, rural folks whose only exposure to Islam is pictures of terrorists on TV. Ergo, some dude from small town X in a midwestern state is more likely to get up in arms about this than many New Yorkers would be. Yeah the diversity in NYC really is a sight to see, and it's one of the biggest reasons I really enjoy visiting there. Even though they were the ones victimized the worst on 9/11, they are also the most likely people to understand that the idea muslim=terrorism is stupid.

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jul 20, 2010 -> 10:09 PM) Good thing those don't matter for a closer. He pitches so few innings that one bad outing inflates all those stats. All I care about is 20/22 Ummm excuse me? The fact that Jenks has such a poor ERA and WHIP yet has been so succesful in save percentage just shows there is a cause for alarm since really, he's long overdue to blow a few games in a short period of time. You can't just choose when to give up runs and baserunners.

The Tiger Woods Marriage Saga Thread

QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Jul 20, 2010 -> 07:39 PM) NOBODY deserves that much money for doing nothing. If Tiger didn't want to lose all of this money (whatever the actual amount is), he shouldn't have cheated. And if he didn't want to only have sex with one woman, he shouldn't have got married. Since he didn't take either piece of advice, he loses a lot of his assets to Elin. Those are the rules, and he knew them going in. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 07:55 AM) Happens almost every baseball game, and it kills me. There is always some fan in the upper deck, a ways down the line, 20 rows up, who spends the game shouting at the umpire about balls and strikes. Really? From 400' up and over here, you can see the strike zone that well? Are you half owl? Shut your yap. Haha this one is so perfect, because I know some people who are actually really smart sports fans, yet they still do this crap. I always respond with "the ump is hundreds of feet closer, I'll take his word for it". Even if you think it's controversial, just check the video later to see if you're right. But to whine at that point is asinine, as you pointed out.

Official 2010-2011 NCAA Football Thread
whitesoxfan101 replied to knightni's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Yep, and they basically are now going to pretend Reggie Bush and OJ Mayo never existed apparently. This turn of events was inevitable, but it's still a shock to the system seeing it actually happen IMO. Also, Pat Haden is replacing Mike Garrett as the AD at USC. I've always found it crazy a USC guy like that announced Notre Dame games, so I guess this job makes more sense for him. -
It certainly sounded like Hendry will be back next year in that press conference, Ricketts didn't leave much wiggle room in his comments. You're right about Brenly being a potential candidate, Reedfan, but I think he might be a little bit behind in that race. Buster Olney seems to think it's possible Joe Torre will be the Cubs manager next year. I guess that makes sense in that Torre won't be back in LA next year, but would the Cubs really want to hire a guy in his 70's as manager after the Lou experience?
-
Ahh yeah I forgot about that. Our 40 is at 39 according to the official site though, even if you include Peavy.
-
I believe you are correct about the 40 man roster point, although I think our 40 only has 39 on it right now anyways, so he could easily be added.
-
Yeah I stand by the fact that she wouldn't have resigned if she truly thought she was blameless. Regardless of what the administration was telling her.
