HAWKS WIN! HAWKS WIN THE STANLEY CUP!!
whitesoxfan101 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 11:50 AM) hahaha a lisp. . . really? No he's drunk. Kaner has every right to act like a 21 y/o douchebag, we've all been there. I get it, he's happy and jolly and eager (not Ben) to celebrate the biggest accomplishment of his life. But that doesn't change the fact that he's a 21 y/o douchebag. We all probably got away with it because we're not super famous athletes, but he is a super famous athlete and he acted like a 21 y/o douchebag. If it were me, I would keep my social proclivities on the down low and present a decent image to the public. He didn't do that . . . he acted like a 21 y/o douchebag. Some people won't care about his douchebag antics, some people will love his douchebag antics, and some people will won't like his douchebag antics (as illustrated by this thread). His behavior bothered me, but not nearly enough to make me dislike him or ruin my excitement over winning the cup. my .02 Yeah, I don't really think anybody cares if a 21 year old, single hockey star goes out and gets drunk and has a little fun with the ladies. It's the public forum of something like the parade was where his drunkeness bothers some people. As for the cap issues, I'm not overwhelmingly concerned about them. The cap issues mean this team probably won't be quite as deep or quite as good as they were this year, but we knew this was coming for a while now. They're still going to be good enough to be a legit contender to repeat, unless Stan has some things up his sleeve we're not expecting. But in general, this year was absolutely set up perfectly for the Hawks to win it all, especially with the way things played out in the playoffs after the Nashville series. Even if the Hawks win another Cup in the near future (which they certainly could), I doubt they'll have things setup for them as well as they did this year all things considered. That's why (beyond the obvious factors) it was so important they get it done THIS YEAR, and to their credit they did. -
Why on earth would we be a buyer? And even if a legit answer to that question can be found, what do we have in the minors to trade for help?

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 12, 2010 -> 07:32 PM) July 31 is 7 weeks from today. Plenty of time. No rush to make moves. Well you might get a better offer now since the other team would have the player for longer. I agree with the premise though, don't make a move yet unless you get a really good offer.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jun 12, 2010 -> 07:30 PM) The Tim Howard/Robert Green comparisons to the MLB, NFL and NHL really irk the living s*** out me. Twitter was absolutely UNBEARABLE this afternoon. Well Green gave up about the worst goal you can give up, and Howard made some outstanding saves. I'm not sure I see any sort of comparisons between that and MLB or the NFL though since neither has goalies. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 12, 2010 -> 07:13 PM) What the f*** with the Jenks hate??? Give me a break already. He's not a good pitcher, that's what is with the "hate".

At least we can beat the Cubs (although I think the person who said it feels better right now not losing to the Cubs than it does beating them was dead on), and are in great shape to keep the all time series lead and take the BP Cup (ick). Beyond that, it's nice to see a good turn through the starting rotation, but that's about it. Just hard to take joy in meaningless games, and I hope we don't do anything to make our front office go into go for it mode again when it would be pointless to do so.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 11, 2010 -> 09:05 PM) There's so much parity in the NHL that teams like Montreal and Philly come up and get to the Finals every year. To me, that proves even more that the Cup is the hardest to win. The fact that great, highly seeded teams are regularly bounced out early in the playoffs in the NHL shows that it's just really hard to build a champion. -

I actually don't drink alcohol, but I am not going to hold it against some young hockey players because they did it after completing what is probably the greatest accomplishment of their lives. And I can't see how anybody is going to judge them for getting tipsy at such a time either. -

Although it's a different sport and today was only a draw (although a solid result to be sure against the Brits obviously), I kept thinking Ryan Miller in the first USA vs. Canada game watching Tim Howard today, he was ridiculous. Hopefully the U.S. can take care of business in a big way the next two games and somehow get the #1 spot in the group. -

Kaner has issues with being a 21 year old drunken idiot at times. A LOT of 21 year olds have that problem, as anybody who has been to college (which is most of us) knows. He produces on the ice, and as long as the cab thing remains a one time incident, I can't sit here and tell him what to do with his spare time. Kaner wasn't the only one that seemd a bit tipsy today either. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 11, 2010 -> 08:35 PM) Nobody else would take the job while having to deal with someone else's manager, unless the guy's an MLB legend (you'd do it if your manager was Torre or Cox) Exactly, but it's even moreso true with an unstable personality like Ozzie. -

QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 11, 2010 -> 08:33 PM) Everyone even halfway decent has a chance to make the NBA/NHL playoffs. Not so much in MLB. You have to win 4 rounds of 4 games in a sport where bounces and good fortune are VERY important and physicality is at an incredible level to win the Stanley Cup. The MLB playoffs are no doubt harder to make, but once you get there, it's nowhere near as difficult to win it as it is in the NHL IMO (although it is tough.) Guess it depends how you look at the question. -

You have to make Hahn GM if you're going to keep Ozzie, it's the only choice. Nobody else would deal with taking the job if they had to inherit a hot tempered, iffy (at best) strategical manager like him. -

QUOTE (kev211 @ Jun 11, 2010 -> 07:36 PM) That parade was awesome. Indeed, got down there early and got a good spot not too far from the stage, and it was an awesome time. -

1. Stanley Cup 2. World Series 3. NCAA Tournament 4. FIFA World Cup I'd have the NCAA Tournament and FIFA World Cup a close 3rd and 4th, not too far behind the top 2. You could re-order #1 and #2 if you want, but I just think the physical toll of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and the luck involved in hockey makes it the hardest. But the World Series is right there, it's hard just to make the playoffs in 162 games and then the playoffs there can be a lot about luck too. -

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 11, 2010 -> 12:47 AM) JR obviously doesn't want to fire either of them. I'm sure he'll tell them both to learn to get along or they'll both be out of jobs. My rosy prediction is we get on a roll here and everyone finds a way to get along. We could only be so lucky. This team sucks, is poorly run on the baseball side, and is irrelevant in it's own city (5th most popular team in Chicago right now.) That, along with all of this KW/Ozzie drama, simply can't last. Something has to be done. If we're only going to fire one though, firing KW isn't too bad though. He has a longer resume of trouble at his job, and if we brought in a GM that doesn't give in to Ozzie's idiotic, NL style managing demands while also doing his job well...maybe Ozzie can look like a competent manager and we can look like a competent team again. They should both be gone though obviously. -
Most anti-climatic Cubs/Sox game I've ever been to. Probably a third of the crowd was in Hawks gear and coming back from the parade (like I was, for instance) which is the real reason they started it late (there was no rain, sign of rain, or threat of rain in the area all day that I could see, and I was in the city and outside all day.) There were more "let's go Hawks" chants than let's go Sox and Cubs chants combined. Good to see a win over the Cubs in person at that hole though, even though it doesn't really mean anything.

QUOTE (Brian @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 05:26 PM) Alright, we are all guys here, so here goes... I have been "going at it" the past few weeks like I am 15. I'm talking daily or once every other day. I have been doing my thing once a week at the most when I wasn't getting laid. I get "warmed up" at the slightest things it seems recently. What the hell is wrong with me? If you are saying that you strangle the salami (I don't think that one was used yet in this thread) more when sexually active than you do when not sexually active, I don't think anything is wrong with that. It seems like the idea that people grab the goods more when alone than they do when seeing somebody is kind of a myth IMO.

Joe Cowley says our season is over: do you agree?

QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 02:04 PM) Dude, knock it off. Jones has been a significant offensive force for this team, and has been a stud for pretty much his entire career (when healthy). Jones' OPS and walk-off homers carry a lot more weight than your heavily biased opinion. Never advocated extending Teahen, but his bat isn't nearly as bad as the mouth-foamers on this board suggest. The worst that you can say about him is that he lacks power for a 3B. If you want to play that game, Jones makes up for that as a part-time player. In regards to part 1, are you serious? He's been a terrible offensive player since May 1st. A hot April doesn't=significant offensive force. I can't even believe I'm having this argument about a guy that really has been a bad offensive player since 2006 ended. As for Teahen, he's a 3rd basemen with no power and poor defense. To me, that's a problem, especially considering he's a career .331 OBP guy (with a whopping .340 in that category this year) and that's his best quality. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 02:02 PM) I like the part where you called him out for using full season stats to hide a bad recent stretch, then used full season stats to hide recent good stretches. He is making mind numbingly ridiculous arguments, but if you want to attach to them as well, be my guest. To somehow defend Mark Teahen, Juan Pierre, and Andruw Jones performances right now as some sort of help is obnoxious. They've been mediocre, just like any reasonable person would expect. To say "people were wrong" to think they'd kill this teams offensive production is simply wrong. -
Silva took the fluke baton from Randy Wells this year. I wouldn't be shocked if he gets crushed in interleague though, he's maybe the ultimate example of what a move to the NL can do for a pitcher. That league is an absolute joke, which makes the Cubs struggles even more surprising.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 10:06 AM) "Most people" predicted that Andruw Jones, Mark Teahen, and Juan Pierre would kill this team's offensive production. They were wrong. Instead, Teahen has a respectable .340 OBP and Jones is sporting a remarkable .823 OPS, with solid defense to boot. After a slow start, Pierre is inching back towards his typical .280 BA/.330 OBP and already has 22 stolen bases. On the other hand, nobody predicted that Quentin, Beckham, and AJ would all be hitting around the Mendoza Line after two months. Andruw Jones is hitting .216 and has an OPS inflated by a red hot start, similarly to what he did last year. He's 16 for 85 since May started with an on base under .300 and a slugging percentage under .400. That is about as blatant an example of using stats to spin an argument as I've seen in a LONG time. Mark Teahen is a 3rd basemen with a slugging percentage for the season under .400 who can't play defense. Thank God we gave him that extension for no reason! And Juan Pierre is a leadoff man with a .318 on base percentage, thank goodness we gave up a solid young pitcher like John Ely for him! Beckham has sucked at pretty shocking levels though, I will give you that. Seriously. -

QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 10:53 AM) I couldn't believe this wasn't discussed by the announcers, let alone called by the officials. Harntell was across the goal line and partly inside the net, clearly blocking Niemi's lateral movement, and the shot was to that side. I know its a non-reviewable judgment call, but it seemed pretty obvious to me, and I though it at least warranted some analysis and an explanation. I didn't think that play should have been a penalty, but I did think a very strong case could have been made for that goal not counting. I'm not 100 percent sure on the exact specific wording of that rule though, but it was definitely a very close call at the very least. -
