Remember when...?
Two things stand out to me. One, it's so easy to get music today. When I was a freshman in college (1990), one of my friends used to call the local UofI Urbana oldies station and request "Brown Eyed Girl." Then he'd add, "I'm taping it, so please don't talk over the beginning music." I bet he recorded it ten times with the guy talking up the song right up to the first lyric. I guess that's a little better than me watching Friday Night Videos and taping songs by holding my little radio with the cassetted player up to the tv speakers. The other thing that really stands out is porn. It was unavailable to me as a kid. I bet kids today don't even glance at the bra and underwear ads, and I'm sure they wouldn't watch scrambled movies just hoping to catch a glimpse of some nudity. One time, a few of my friends and I were walking down the street (this is early 1980s), and we stumbled upon the Holy Grail of porn. I guess some guy had found God or something because he threw out a garbage can full of magazines. We grabbed a bunch, and then we headed over to the nearby public school to look at them. It was great, but then the problem became, what do we do with them now? We couldn't bring them home, so we had to stash them. We found a spot, but when we came back, they were gone. I imagine the scene of another group of tweens finding them, having the same reaction we did, and losing them in the same way we did being played over and over.

Favorite White Sox Memory With Your Family
In 1991 when Robin Ventura hit a game winning grand slam off of Goose Gossage to beat Texas. It's the game that Frank Thomas picked Ventura up over his shoulders at home plate and the rest of the guys jumped in and pounded him on the back and helmet. It was real emotion - not the choreographed helmet throw/jump up and down together thing that every team does now. We had a cousin visiting from England, and I don't think he was overly impressed with the game or the crowd compared to the English soccer crowds he was used to seeing. We were sitting in right field, not far from where the ball landed, and the place exploaded when it landed. That one moment definitely changed his opinion of baseball. He didn't stop talking about it the rest of his visit.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 26, 2009 -> 08:05 AM) I am very jealous! I love the Neeley's! Is this Cam or Ed's cook book?

'TIME' Person Of The Year
I know he had a bit of a down year, but I would give it to Tim Tebow. "In such a cynical, sarcastic society, oftentimes looking for the negative on anybody or anything, if you’re fortunate enough to spend five minutes or 20 minutes around Tim Tebow, your life is better for it." - Thom Brennaman. Who could argue with that?

Best Music of 2009
QUOTE (Tex @ Dec 22, 2009 -> 09:34 AM) I am subtitling this thread music that Tex has never heard of, will never hear of, and probably would never "get" I do this with every music related thread. I don't know what station my alarm is set on, but I went through a several week period where Miley Cyrus' "Party in the USA" was my wake-up song. What a way to start the day.

What's your OCD?
QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Dec 22, 2009 -> 08:06 PM) I also do the money thing in my wallet. So when does something become normal and not an OCD. Maybe the crazy f***ers that keep their money all jumbled up are the ones with a disorder. DMD. Disorganized Money Disorder. Money put in sequential order in your wallet is the right thing to do. What do these DMD misfits do when paying for something?? Dump all their cash out, searching for bills and slowing down us productive members of society. They write checks.

What's your OCD?
I think I do all of the things listed. I finish my kids' puzzles after they've moved on, eat my food one item at a time, check my alarm several times before going to sleep - and then I can't figure out why it was turned off at some point during the night. I arrange bills in order in my wallet, put my shoes together by the front door when I take them off (my wife and kids leave their shoes throughout the house for me to trip over), check my pockets for wallet, keys, phone several times a day and always before I leave work for home. When I get home, these items are placed in a hat that I have on my kitchen counter. If I can't find them there later, someone has been in my stuff - though nobody ever admits to it. I've never weaved a basket, but I'm sure if I did, I wouldn't stop until the job was done. I may be nuts.

Mark Buehrle's Perfect American Chopper
QUOTE (Sox1422 @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 11:44 AM) I thought the bike was cool, but I'm not a big fan of the scoreboard. I thought that was kind of lame. The wheels were sweet. Totally agree. They should have painted the final scorboard somewhere on the bike. To ride around with an LED diplaying "perfect" would be pretty lame. Hopefully it can be removed without doing much damage to the rest of the bike. It's similar to "Monster House" (or whatever that show Ty Pennington hosts is called). One of the people they're helping will mention that they like to sing, and then they'll design a bedroom with a stage and microphone, etc. Cool for a day, but who really wants a stage taking up 1/3 of their bedroom?

USPS - WHOOPS!
It's unlikely that this is a USPS error. Someone in the military at the point of delivery messed up, methinks. Seems like the post office just returned the mail to the sender that was returned to the post office as undeliverable.

Hall of Fame Ballot is out
QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 28, 2009 -> 11:12 AM) Until a positive test shows up, like in Bonds' or Palmeiro's case, I see no direct reason to deny McGwire. McGwire was named in a FBI investigation as a user before the BALCO and Congress stuff. http://www.nydailynews.com/archives/sports...bi_informa.html He wasn't pursued because the focus of the investigation was on the dealers, not users. Another interesting point in the investigation is that Reggie Jackson is good friends with the guy said to have supplied/injected McGwire several times. Who knows how far back steroid use in baseball really goes?

Ex-NBA ref Donaghy's book canceled by publisher
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 30, 2009 -> 11:08 AM) Does Champ Bailey get away with pass intereference more than a Zackary Bowman because of who he is?? No Does Cliff Lee get a much bigger strike zone than Scott Eyre? No In MLB, Glavine and Maddux had a completely different strike zone than most other pitchers. The reason? Both guys could consistently pound the spot where the catcher placed his glove. If that was 6 inches off the plate, so be it. In the NFL, guys like Michael Irvin got away with pushing off a DB because they were known as "physical" receivers. Star treatment happens in all the sports. That said, the NBA sucks. I find it almost impossible to watch a regular season game anymore. I don't know why they don't call travelling when guys take three steps, or why point guards can carry the ball the way they do. I think it's part of the reason we have trouble in international play (in addition to the rest of the world improving). In international play, we don't get away with all the things NBA players take for granted.

4 years ago tonight
I taped the WS in '05, and I never watched it until recently. Actually, I'm in the process of watching Game 2, and the announcers are talking about Pettite and how his velocity has improved since the beginning of the season. They also talk about how his fitness improved after the Yankees picked up Clemens. Kind of funny to listen to now.

QUOTE (Kid Gleason @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 06:30 PM) Probably not too long after that I would guess. He was 89. But hey, that guy was one of the coolest guys I ever met. I worked with a mailman who was 81 and still delivering mail in Phoenix, AZ. I'm 37.

Usain Bolt and Tyson Gay
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 17, 2009 -> 12:16 PM) Nope, I'm the same way. I'd be surprised if Bolt ISN'T on PED's. In the ESPN magazine issue with one of the Molina bros on the cover, there's an article about Bolt. In the article, it's mentioned that five of Bolt's teammates on the national team have tested positive for PEDs in the past couple of years, and, if I recall correctly, Bolt has shaved almost half of a second off his previous best time in the 100 in the past couple of years. I'd also be more surprised if he ISN'T on PEDs.

Fantasy Football Draft tracker
QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Aug 17, 2009 -> 07:04 AM) The thing I really want to know is who has picked which positions and I have that tracking at the top. I find that pretty valuable in determining if I can wait an extra rd before making a pick. This is probably the most important thing that you should know during a draft. I'm in two leagues, and I'd bet that half of the guys in each league don't pay attention to the other teams' rosters. Knowing what the other teams need allows you to skip players that you're sure will be available when the draft comes around to your next pick.

Manny and Big Papi tested positive for steroids in 03
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 11:46 PM) Canseco now saying a Hall of Famer was on PEDs Hate to continue to feed the ego on this douche, but he's somehow became a saint lately. 7 HOF teammates of Canseco's.. Reggie Jackson Wade Boggs Don Sutton Nolan Ryan Rickey Henderson Rich Gossage Dennis Eckersley Since he's saying this now, ima go out on a limb and say it was Rickey Henderson but that's pure speculation on my part. Though Rickey would probably tell me that Rickey don't do steroids, Rickey is a clean player, and Rickey got all of Rickey's stats the natural way cause he's the greatest of all time. I swear that I heard Reggie Jackson was good friends with one of the steroid suppliers who was caught a few years ago. I tried to find the story, but couldn't find it. Of those seven players listed, the only ones I'd rule out are Sutton and Eck. I doubt Gossage and Boggs, but could be talked into them.

Red Sox land Vmart
QUOTE (League @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 11:53 AM) Eh. Beckett has been mediocre in 2/4 of his years there, and Hanley could possibly be the best player in baseball. Imagine an infield of Youk-Pedroia-Hanley-Lowell. Sick. Didn't Lowell go to Boston in that trade?
