  1. Let's come up with characters that serve 1 of 2 purposes, either sell toys or fit a missing demographic, and come up with a way to work them into the story. Thinking about it more makes me kind of mad. Finn and Rose were a complete waste of time. Can anyone think of a more useless character than Captain Phasma? I mean, why? Why was she even in both movies?
  2. QUOTE (Tony @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 09:51 PM) Alright, I’m posting this without reading any comments above this. Trying to post my opinion “fresh” then I’ll read what others thought. -The movie tried to do too much. It was too long for one, the entire casino/Benicio Del Torro story line didn’t need to be there. It was basically to cover one small plot hole about the First Order finding them, which could have been explained 100 different ways. - The horse riding scene at the casino, plus Leia floating in f***ing space really made me roll my eyes. It felt like a weird Disney movie, not Star Wars (I understand the connection, unfortunately). -There were a lot of things I liked. I really liked what they did with Poe, and to see him mature into a leader. Mark Hamill was fantastic, although not sure how I feel about his story arc. I need to think about it more. Thought Yoda was really well done. -I’m very torn right now. There were so many Star Wars moments, but so many things that left me wanting more. It's because they came up with characters like Finn and they need to find something for them to do, like the garbage Finn subplot. I was really hoping they'd kill him off because he literally serves no purpose in the plot.
  3. I actually really like Luke's death. The 3 most powerful Jedi all went out by transcending the Force. It mirrored Obi Wan in that Luke realized showing the antagonist the true power of the Force was more important than a sword fight.
  4. Also, Rogue One is the only Star Wars film since Empire that got the tone right. Well, it was the only film that knew exactly what it wanted to be and stayed consistent. The tone in The Last Jedi was a mess. 1. Empire 2. A New Hope 3. Rogue One 4. Return of the Jedi 5. The Force Awakens 6. The Last Jedi 7. Revenge of the Sith 8. Phantom Menace 9. Disgrace of the Clones We ended up with 2 incredible movies, 2 very good movies, 2 mediocre/entertaining movies, and 3 all time bad movies. Lastly, it's pretty obvious they develop an idea for a character and build a story around those characters instead developing a story and creating characters to serve the story.
  5. I don't know how I feel about it. I think Kylo Ren's arc is interesting. I loved that he killed Snoke and don't mind that Snoke didn't have a backstory. The Emperor didn't have a back story at this point either. He was just evil. I'd probably give it a 6.5. I kind of feel closure now that Luke is gone. When they introduced the new Force sensitive kid, I knew I was over it. I have no interest in following a different story in this universe. Star Wars has been a huge part of my entertainment, but I'm okay with moving on. I don't really care what happens to Kylo or Rey at this point, though I like the direction they've taken Kylo Ren in.
  6. Friday @ Noon. IMAX. Stoked.
  7. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 5, 2017 -> 09:53 AM) My department's holiday party is renting two theaters to watch the movie, stoked for it! Your company is awesome!
  8. As societal views of race relations changed, a number of politicians were forgiven for the positions they held. I wonder if the same will be done as societal views on the objectification of women changes. There should be a distinction between those that are guilty of being dirty old men and those that used their power to abuse women sexually. Franken's case seems pretty benign when compared to Weinstein and CK, imo.
  9. And here I thought the NFL's popularity was declining because of the over-commercialization/over-analyzation and that Millennials just aren't as interested in watching black men attempt to kill each other for entertainment. It's actually because a small group of players are protesting by not standing for a song with little modern relevance.
  10. QUOTE (Reddy @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 05:15 PM) Go back a few pages. Already made this argument. Fewer Ds than Rs have committed these types of crimes and walked away scot-free, and more Rs than Ds have had sex scandals over the past couple decades. Also there are just fewer male Democrats in office, so the odds are in my favor. You realize keeping score is seriously shallow and petty, right?
  11. Politicizing pedophilia is pretty cheap. There's an obvious correlation/causation break in logic, but don't let that stop any of you from pushing your agenda.
  12. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Nov 10, 2017 -> 04:22 PM) Neither party can legally consent when they are intoxicated. It's just like entering into a contract. You can't enter into a contract if you are intoxicated. You can't enter into a contract if you a minor. You cannot legally consent to have sex when you are intoxicated. This blurs a lot of lines, because pass out drunk is different than over the legal limit. We're not talking about legality. Well, I'm not anyway, which is why I said public opinion originally.
  13. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 10, 2017 -> 04:21 PM) I dont think thats true. Anyone could be too intoxicated to consent. And that's the slippery slope. Personally, I don't see it as predatory to go out for drinks with a girl and end up back at one of your places to bang. It's never been that way until recently. There's definitely been a shift though and it has been towards men being predatory if it happens, which IMO is sexist.
  14. The thing I find ironic is that it's sexist to suggest that a woman can't make consensual sexual decisions when she's intoxicated, but a man can. I guess people see it as a power dynamic.
  15. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 10, 2017 -> 03:56 PM) This is the point though. If you are drunk, then according to some schools of thought, it cannot be consensual by definition. That was kind of the point of my post. My opinion doesn't really matter, so I just stopped.
  16. I'm a sober alcoholic. One of the many reasons I quit drinking was that I recognized the shift among the younger generation regarding drunken hook ups. I was sleeping with a lot of girls in their early 20's and, while it was always consensual, I recognized that I'm putting myself in a dangerous position. It doesn't matter if I agree with the shift. The court of public opinion doesn't give a s*** about my opinion. I'd rather be safe than sorry and it helped me stop drinking.
  17. QUOTE (Quin @ Oct 9, 2017 -> 08:01 PM) - Says Meryl Streep is out there praising Weinstein - Streep had come out to condemn Weinstein The inclusion of Weistein was said in jest as Streep's praise of Polanski is pretty infamous. There's been several 1,000+ threads on Reddit condemning Streep. It's pretty common knowledge, or at least i thought so. Both Weinstein and Polanski are sexual predators. My post was pretty transparent. Nitpick if you will, but it's pretty dumb and pointless.
  18. QUOTE (Quin @ Oct 9, 2017 -> 03:38 PM) Yes, I'm aware of Polanski. Who is an atrocious human being and has been given a pass for some reason by many. The topic at hand was indeed Weinstein, so I'm focusing on that one. Obviously I didn't pick the name out of a hat and the conversation had delved into the systematic problem in Hollywood. Your "terrible example" quip was pretty dumb.
  19. QUOTE (Quin @ Oct 9, 2017 -> 03:09 PM) What a terrible name to pick out of a hat. http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-41557010 It's from her giving Polanski a standing ovation at the Oscar's. This was after he sodomized a 13 year old and fled the country.
  20. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Oct 9, 2017 -> 01:48 PM) Bingo. "Hey baby, I can make you a star..." I'm sure that stuff happens daily. I don't know why, because these fools continue to do it, but i'm always amazed at the hubris, like this s*** wouldn't eventually come out? Even one event isn't acceptable, but perhaps he was a creep and took things too far or whatever, call it a one time mistake of your life. But 8 settlements? Come on. And the board of his company getting praise for ousting him. Where were they after settlement 2, 3, 4 etc. They're surrounded by enablers. Somewhere Meryl Streep is applauding Weinstein and Polanski right now.
  21. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 9, 2017 -> 11:42 AM) He always had that look to me. A guy who if he made $50k a year, couldn't get any chicks. To me he always looked like a casting couch guy who did his fair share of blow. You could probably say the same thing about half of Hollywood execs. I'm sure Weinstein isn't unique.
  22. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 7, 2017 -> 05:28 PM) I thought it was incredible. Really not much to nitpick. It checked off everything on my list: mood, visuals, story, sound. I'm a sucker for cerebral sci-fi. I agree that the tone, visuals and mood were on point. The score wasn't great, but they're trying to follow up the greatest score of all time. The story didn't really work for me.
  23. It's incredibly well made, but there are some things that ruin a couple themes of the original. There's always been different interpretations of the source material and I don't jive with this one. With that said, I need to absorb it some more and I'd watch it again.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 06:59 PM) And there's my problem with that - this guy could, for whatever reason, have decided that he was doing the same thing. Standard white terrorist with easy to purchase weapons who wants a body count. Anyway, just makes it hard to draw the dividing line people want to draw. Much more grey than any easy answer - other than the commonality of a heavily armed guy. Anyone unaffiliated with an organized association that commits a random act of violence to this scale is mentally ill. This isn't like the 911 hijackers who were part of an organization and truly believed they were soldiers in a war. There's a clear distinction.
