Tom Petty's dead. 66

I apologize for the attitude earlier. I was in a pretty bad mood. My cousin was actually at the concert. He's fine, but it was a little too close for comfort. Nevertheless, I strongly feel the gun control debate is a hot button political issue that will never be resolved and the majority of politicians don't have the motivation to actually do anything concrete. The debate is good for business if you're a politician. The most pragmatic and realistic solution involves healthcare. I refuse to believe anybody capable of randomly shooting 50 people hasn't shown signs of being completely disconnected from reality. A functional, responsibly healthcare system will identify a lot of these people before they act. In Chicago, we'll never get guns off the street. It's just not realistic. There are millions in circulation. That's not going to change. The reason we see so much gun violence in Chicago is the result of a. The War on Drugs. B. Social engineering and segregation. C. Economic inequality. Obviously these are all daunting reasons, but until we begin address them, the gun control debate is a band aid and a distraction from the real issues.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 11:30 AM) The gun control debate in chicago is a sham because the guns arent purchased in chicago. There is a reason we have more gun deaths per capita than any country on the planet. We have far too many guns, we make guns that are totally unnecessary and they are far too easy to acquire. There shouldnt be more guns than people in this country. Thats the root of the problem. if the politicians dont want to turn off their funding to attack that problem, then make it harder to fire guns, make mental health screening tougher, make background checks mandatory for any purchase, private or commercial. There are so many things that can be done to ensure guns are only in the hands of the qualified. I own 2, neither one of them could be used for a mass shooting, I have no criminal record, and I went through training. Its literally harder to get a scooter license than a gun. Today the stock of every gun manufacturer in the US went UP. Continue to distract yourself with the how instead of the why. It's easier.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 11:15 AM) Pretty sure its hard to shoot a gun without bullets. Whats done is done is a bulls*** cop out and so is trying to point at mental health as the cause. The gun control debate is a sham and its the real cop out. The tough issues are addressing mental health. It's like the gun control debate in Chicago. It's bulls***. People debate guns because they don't want to address the socioeconomic conditions and institutionalized racism that compels young black men to shoot each other. They don't want to because they benefit from that system. I suppose I wanted to get more political than I realized. I find the gun control debate incredibly frustrating.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 11:00 AM) Cool. Outlaw the manufacturing and distribution of ammo designed for assault rifles. They can keep their totally unnecessary guns. Outlaw sales of guns outside of places that can check for things like registered mental illness and spotty backgrounds. If you want to sell one person to person, you have to do so through an accredited 3rd party. But once again, you can keep buying guns lawfully. 2A guys can still keep their 8+ guns per person. FYI, I am a registered gun owner and I have a concealed carry permit. None of this will happen or impact the presence of guns. What's done is done. The streets are littered with guns and gun culture is as American as Apple pie. That's not going to change. Addressing mental health is something that can make an impact. The rest is just drivel to employ politicians and distract the masses.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 10:59 AM) I'm not actually particularly pro-gun control but maybe take this to the 'buster rather than bringing it up out of the blue to bait people? Your focus on the type of gun made it clear where you were going with this. I mean, duh.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 10:56 AM) nobody was talking politics until you brought it up though, it's like you just wanted an excuse to get on your own soap box about it You're incredibly transparent.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 10:53 AM) Yep, my agenda is safety, its my political platform. Less innocent people dead. I can tell you the only 2 absolutes are that 1. Guns aren't going anywhere. 2. Old white guys will talk in circles knowing they aren't going anywhere. If you want to address issues that might be solvable, start with mental health.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 10:50 AM) Its sad that safety is considered a political issue. We have more gun deaths per capita than any country on the planet, and its not even close. And it begins...

Everyone, get your political agendas geared up. Here we go.

QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 08:30 AM) How did he get access outside? Did he break a window? That was my first thought. Then, I was like, this asshole just killed 50 people. I don't think he cares about breaking a window.

The Era of the No-Good, Very Bad Home Run Hitter

They don't have the re-watchability (making up words n s***) for me, but a movie has to be really special for me to watch it twice, even if I really like it.

Are we allowed to get nervous about Moncada at this point?

I don't have an opinion on the matter, but I'll just say it's really hard to get a good bearing on a CF unless you see them get a ton of reps in person, not on TV. You can't see their jumps, reads and instincts on TV.

QUOTE (soxforlife05 @ Sep 3, 2017 -> 11:50 PM) Are you saying I don't know who he is? I was probably the biggest vocal opponent to that trade although I certainly wasn't the only one. Weird how threads disappear on this site so you can't see anyone's track record of being right or wrong. Was right about Devers being the top guy to get from Boston, Delmonico being biggest sleeper before the season, Eaton trade being amazing, etc I don't think anybody cares whether you're right or wrong, tbh.

Can we have a Tatis Jr sticky so every time he's brought up we can just link the poster to that thread?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 28, 2017 -> 09:05 AM) It's amazing just how bulletproof Coop is with the fan base. No other coach has ever ripped fans for not showing up more than he has. He gets all the credit for any success his pitchers have, and gets no blame when they suck. Every other coach and manager, it's pretty much the opposite. All the blame when they suck, it's all the player when they do well. A guy goes down to the minors and starts throwing strikes, comes back and Coop is a genius. A guy sucks with the White Sox and goes on and becomes a decent pitcher elsewhere...not Coop's fault. IMO, the reality is somewhere in the middle, he's a good pitching coach, but not this treasure he's made out to be. Can you give any specific examples for any part of this post. I'm genuinely curious.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 22, 2017 -> 08:36 AM) Sure, but what is the solution....Gandhian/MLK non-violence and passive resistance yet again? It's certainly true that the violent right generally supports President Trump. Given that support, his hesitancy about criticizing even the most extreme Nazi imagery and lethal violence (he did call out "racist violence" two days later, then walked it back) creates the impression that, if he isn't explicitly sympathetic to the marching morons at Charlottesville, he at least enjoys basking in the scented glow of tiki torches. If we're balancing dangers on the great scale of suckage, that connection to the White House would seem to make the fascist right the more immediate threat. But that doesn't mean we have to pick a competing brand of ideological awfulness as a viable alternative to fascism. The thugs on the left have already proved themselves to be violent and intolerant. There's no reason to favor one illiberal force over another when our country has a long history based on much different, and much better, political principles. "Sooner or later... one has to take sides—if one is to remain human," Haider writes, quoting a character from Graham Greene's The Quiet American. "The liberal center has to heed the same warning," Haider adds. "In order to reject Trump's equivocations about 'many sides,' we have to take one." But the character Haider quotes is a member of Vietnam's Communist party—which killed "probably about 1,040,000" people in the post-Vietnam War period, after it came to power over the united country, as estimated by the late Prof. R. J. Rummel of the University of Hawaii. What about that? That's an unpalatable side to pick in any situation. We do have to pick a side. But we already have one. Despite our many differences over specific policies, most Americans have traditionally supported the side of liberty, tolerance, free speech, and peaceful political change, within broad parameters. That side is in opposition to the violent, authoritarian thugs of the right and of the left. If we regain our faith in what we already have, there's no reason to choose between rival siblings competing to rule over the ruins of everything that's worthwhile on behalf of their illiberal family. http://reason.com/archives/2017/08/22/choo...antifa-and-fasc The problem is we're treating skinheads/Neo-Nazis here as just a somewhat innocent, misunderstood group...if they were exactly that, why would there have any been any need to oppose them in the first place? Sharks and Jets, Hatfields and McCoys, Montagues and Capulets...yet why are the hospitalized or number of serious injuries in the name of the skinhead movement exponentially higher? How many has/have Antifa ever killed? What about the hundreds or thousands of deaths that the Aryan Brotherhood is behind in the American prison systems? They're different from skinheads, how exactly? I'm gonna be totally honest with you Caulfield. I don't really read your posts.

Get it together people. You're talking about a 22 year old with 1100 AB's in pro baseball.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 21, 2017 -> 08:41 PM) Again, you've turned this into a partisan issue when it's not one. Am I allowed to beat someone's ass cause they were "annoying" and justify it by saying some random right-wing psychopath ran down an innocent person with their car? Think that defense would hold up in court? It's completely absurd and I'm not sure why you're still trying to connect scummy behavior by liberal prostestors to the Republican Party. You realize TaylorStreet is a liberal right? You realize I'm a liberal right? You're "the Republicans have done way worse" argument isn't going to work here because we aren't defending them. We're simply calling s***ty behavior regardless of political affiliation. Great series of posts, CWS. People realize that "antifas" originated from skinhead culture, right? It used to be that skinheads and antifas ran in the same circles, with opposing beliefs. They'd go to Hardcore shows, get in fights with one another, then go grab some coffee together and talk about how cool being "edge" was. Both groups were equally violent, equally misguided, led by idiots that preyed on youth wanting something to believe in. The current political climate is a real indictment of the Democratic party. Here you have an idiot running the country. You have a motivated base. Yet, there's such a lack of leadership that they can't seize the opportunity. As a liberal, it's extremely frustrating to witness. The Equivalence Fallacies of some of the posters in this thread really aren't worth arguing. Justifying poor behavior by comparing it to worse behavior is how children argue. Literally.

QUOTE (Quin @ Aug 21, 2017 -> 02:23 PM) At least no one hit him with a car? I like what you did there by adding false equivalence to already to stupid logic. Genius!

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Aug 21, 2017 -> 11:41 AM) Dude was being annoying on purpose. The crowd reacted the way he wanted them to, so he could put his videos online. My God, this is stupid logic.
-
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 20, 2017 -> 05:41 PM) What ultimately happened at the end of that video? One of our babies was crying and I must have missed something. They tried to beat the guy up for literally nothing. Just a bunch of entitled/misguided white kids crusading because they have to believe in something.

**SPOILER THREAD** GAME OF THRONES ** SPOILER THREAD **
TaylorStSox replied to TaylorStSox's topic in SLaM
Also, even the source material got bad towards the end. Dance isn't good. It really isn't. Lady Stoneheart is bad. I rolled my eyes at unMountain. The Quentin story was pointless and boring. I seriously thought about skipping the Aegon/Jon Connington plotline. With that said, Dany/Dragons ex machina is already incredibly tired and this last episode might have been the worst the show has ever made.
