It was just a lot of spit-balling on both sides but my feelings are that those guys were traded 100% for baseball reasons. They were far and away the best assets the club had. If any sentimentality went into it that was thrown out the window when they ditched Q last year imo. Q is a guy that embodied the underdog, written off mentality and they shipped him off (in a great trade) as well.

we had this debate and imo it's not worth rehashing. My answer is "yes".

the leverage works both ways. the .7 WAR or whatever is also more important to a contender. The Mariners would be stupid not to claim him IMO. They are getting negative WAR from Felix. I'd say he's doing very well so far, 5:1 K/BB ratio and over a K per inning but so far only in the low minors. Needs to keep it going into AA. He's certainly more likely to contribute in 2020-25 than a 300k Int. signing.

I think clubs have called Hahn's bluff on Shields and will just claim him off waivers post deadline. Then maybe if there is interest Chicago can get something more than just salary relief.

He had one really good year, a couple good years, and the rest of the time (nearly half his career) he was around 2 WAR. He was a solid regular that had a couple All-Star level years. Sox need more than that from Eloy.

Carlos Lee? He of a 112 career wRC and whose single season highest ISO was .255? Who was one of the worst defenders in baseball for a decade and finished with 28 fWAR (best season 5.5)? If that's all Eloy turns into then fuck. Sox need Eloy to be a superstar. A guy that is routinely putting up a wRC+ between 130-160 and who can defend his position enough to get to 5-8 WAR on a yearly basis. If he's not, the rebuild takes a step back.

9.8% K rate in AAA, that is absurd for a guy with an ISO over 300. We are really looking at a Manny type hitter.

Personally I feel this is a clear case of being pound foolish and penny smart. I HEAVILY discount any future event that is 7 year out. In 7 fucking years ALOT can happen. So much in fact that trying to predict is pointless. This is basic Nassim Taleb thinking, everybody should read his books.
