QUOTE (juddling @ Sep 14, 2014 -> 10:40 AM) Why do i get the feeling that if the parents were called/brought in they would be furious that their little princess was asked to give up cell phone. The girl has a false sense of entitlement that she got from somewhere....... Because her mom was on the other end of the phone at the time and whatever was being talked about related to her mom's medical condition, which probably means her mom actually wanted her to stay in touch. Because entitlement. A truly strong kid doesn't care about their family's health conditions. That's the lesson a real American needs to learn.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 14, 2014 -> 08:48 AM) Please don't get sucked in by the 21 home runs. Viciedo has a .279 OBP, and that just can't be playing in the lineup every day unless you are a catcher. The Gillaspie/Viciedo platoon is tempting, but Viciedo doesn't really have big platoon splits, so that doesn't work well either. I'm not saying he should be non-tendered, but I hope the Sox plans don't include him playing much, if at all. You want to pay him probably >$5 mil as an arbitration guy to "not play him much, if at all"? Just say he should be non tendered. At least that makes sense.

QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 14, 2014 -> 01:36 PM) An expert who saw it on tape said from the look of it, it could be a sprain, a dislocation, or even a broken bone. Looks weren't good and it was difficult to tell what the trainers were doing. He left with an "air cast" on his leg, which I think is somewhat inconsistent with a sprain. AJ Green, DeSean Jackson, and Knowson Moreno out already today as well. -
So hi from the Cubs at Pirates. Will Baez strike out 4 tonight? Will I feel the wind from his swing? Only time will tell.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 12, 2014 -> 04:40 PM) I read this week some Ferguson protestors, 30 or so, got arrested. They were going to stop traffic on I-70. That's a good way to get arrested. Protests are fine. But you can't have human road blocks on major highways. Geez. You paid attention again.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 12, 2014 -> 04:44 PM) It's worth hearing the mother's position on our government not exactly shining in the case of her son getting beheaded. http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/11/us/james-fol....html?hpt=hp_t1 Yeah, the "The government threatened us with jail" is a really weird one and I have no idea how to react to it.

It's about that time of the year again...

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Sep 12, 2014 -> 03:51 AM) So you don't care about draft picks OR signing a top free agent this offseason? Because that's going to be what happens if the Sox end up falling out of the top 11 picks; they won't sign any top free agents. No James Shields, no Victor Martinez, no Russell Martin, no Nelson Cruz, No John Lester. Basically the Sox could sign Yasmani Tomas and maybe Edison Volquez or Justin Masterson. That's probably going to happen anyway. -
Will Dunn get a job with the organization after he retires?
Balta1701 replied to ron883's topic in Pale Hose Talk
To answer the question in a more serious, possibly caring way...we've also heard vague rumors about Dunn having health issues involving his family members (and those possibly playing into his 2011 season). Given that, I would also not be surprised at all if he took some time away from the game post retirement for familial reasons. Adam Dunn retiring this offseason rather than continuing to play for 2-3 more years, when he certainly appears able to do that as a part time power hitting DH, seems consistent with that idea as well. -

QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Sep 11, 2014 -> 05:53 PM) Felix only has 6 more starts than Sale, but has pitched 49 more innings. Meaning Sale would still have to pitch 8+ innings in those missed starts to match Felix's IP. The consistency to go deep into a game is also something the voters look at. If the only difference between them was 15 innings then Sale'd probably take it.

John Danks doesn't work as a bullpen lefty because he's one of the guys with reversed splits. He's a ROOGY more than he is a LOOGY. He gets righties out better than he gets lefties out. This is a function of his change up, it's more effective against righties than lefties and has been much of his career. If you have John Danks in your bullpen, the ideal competitive bullpen would still have 2 other lefties in it. It doesn't help you with that. That's why I was thinking about the closer's spot for him...a place where you won't mind that he's a lefty and he might be able to use his change effectively.
-
It's also possible that you're reading his statement wrong and "For whatever reason" means "we would have had him up and more stretched out but the process of signing him took longer for a reason that has the first name of Scott but I can't say that".
-
QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Sep 11, 2014 -> 03:59 PM) Re: Danks I think it's best to just save as much as we can in a deal, otherwise move him to the pen. I was pondering this earlier today and thinking that Danks would make a very poor LOOGY since his changeup is much more effective against righties than lefties, but I'm wondering whether there'd be any worth in trying to have him close.

Ray Rice Cut and Suspended Indefinitely
Balta1701 replied to ChiSox_Sonix's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 11, 2014 -> 10:16 AM) he got punished, then punished again. I thought 6-8 games was fair for what happened. and then we have the 49ers DT McDonald beating his pregnant gf or wife and playing a week later. If there was tape of him beating her, would he still have played? or would he be insta banned from the NFL? Insta-banned? Depends on the case I'd say. The Ray Rice one happened in February. The NFL had some ability to take their time with that one, it's their own stupidity that screwed it up. This one, there's a legal case here that has to be made first. If you had video of it happening, then maybe you make the suspension right there because you have the evidence in hand, if there's no video then you have to wait at least a little bit until law enforcement does its job because we do give a presumption of innocence overall in this country and that should carry over. The teams in the NFL can probably decide on their own how to deal with a guy in that scenario. Without knowing the person, it does seem like a team where the coach says he has zero tolerance for that stuff publicly is a case where the team should elect to sit him based on the coaches statements, but I won't say that should be the case in every circumstance. If a guy is going to play while the investigation moves forward, that's tolerable. You can't fire a guy or tell him not to come to work that day until the police give something. -
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Sep 11, 2014 -> 01:04 AM) I realize neither is close, although 2016 is only 2 seasons from now. In baseball, that is an eternity. 2 seasons ago the White Sox were in 1st place in their division.
-
QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Sep 10, 2014 -> 05:43 PM) Pretty sure you mean neither, and I agree. "Going for it" means not planning on Danks as one of the five, unless they decide to give him until, oh say, mid-May/early June to make himself tradeable. Otherwise he's our $14.25M LOOGY. LOL, I read that as a misspelling of Ethier.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 10, 2014 -> 04:57 PM) The Associated Press @AP 5m BREAKING: AP Source: Law enforcement official sent copy of Ray Rice tape to NFL executive in April The official isn't named because they didn't have permission to release the video, but they released a recording of the person he/she spoke to acknowledging that they'd gotten the tape and it was "pretty bad". That's a detailed paper trail if there ever was one. -

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 10, 2014 -> 01:36 PM) With the defense and ST the Bears have, they need an explosive offense. How many NFL teams have explosive offenses with a mediocre "won't lose but can't win the game" QB's? The Bears will not win a lot of games if they average 20 points and they scored 20 points against a team that had a solid but not spectacular defense a year ago. They scored only 20 in no small part because of 3 turnovers. -

QUOTE (almagest @ Sep 10, 2014 -> 11:57 AM) Jeff has been a league-average pitcher since joining Oakland, which is closer to his career stats than his time with the Cubs. I think at this point you can assume the first half of this year was an outlier. He's not gonna be worth a huge contract. League average pitcher = >$75 million contract.
