  1. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 04:15 PM) The important thing is that there is complaining about SOMETHING. It's like taking medicine. When your doctor advises you to take an aspirin a day, he might complain if you don't. He might also complain if you take a thousand aspirin in a day. Those complaints are just the doctor complaining about something and should be ignored.
  2. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 03:55 PM) The manager, the general manager, and the owner who's paying him many millions of dollars clearly don't care what happens to Abreu and/or don't bother to pay any attention. Only internet message board posters do. Since his hitting streak ended he is hitting .194 with a .515 OPS and a single extra base hit. Not paying attention seems like the least negative excuse.
  3. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 04:04 PM) So those games don't count? You said one game a month, which is what he is getting, and the Sox have 4 off days this month as well. But I suppose it is different from when you were complaining that Konerko would be playing too much and Abreu not playing enough when they announced Paulie was coming back. And of course, the smart managerial move is to do the complete opposite. When people say bunting is a bad idea, I say bunt 6 times in an inning! At least you now definitely agree that Konerko is a waste of space on the roster based on this post.
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 03:57 PM) He's missed 13 games in May, 1 in June and 1 in July. It's August 13th, so he has half a month to take a game off this month. They are doing exactly what you said they should do, but you still have a problem with it. His last day off was July 23rd. So basically he had 1 off day other than a DL trip all season. You make a convincing case. He's clearly over-rested, that's why he looks so tired that you can see it through the booth. Thankfully nothing bad ever happens from physical exertion while overtired.
  5. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 10:11 AM) Christmas Day at UC vs. Lakers. That could be fun. It simply cannot possibly be more disappointing than it was last year. Why not try again.
  6. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 03:50 PM) I would rather him keep playing. He has to get use to playing this many games every year 1 game off a month when it really looks like he needs it shouldn't change that and might well help him feel better for the overall grind. With the offdays/long travel and no DH this was about the perfect time. Even Hawk noted on Sunday how Abreu looked more exhausted than he's seen him the entire season.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 10, 2014 -> 06:32 PM) There are 2 off days this week with 2 games in-between. Jose Abreu should get at least one of those days off. He won't, but he should. Looks completely out of it at the plate today. Not hurt, just exhausted. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 10, 2014 -> 10:14 PM) It's nice to know that I don't have to complain about Abreu's lack of time off, you beat me to it every single time. Thanks. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 10:24 AM) Well, that's 0/5 with 2 strikeouts in the first of the 2 games that I said Abreu should have a chance to sit during. Will he be in the lineup again today? I'll call myself impressed if he isn't. Even Hawk commented on how tired Abreu appeared on Sunday. He's starting again today in what would have been a perfect time to get him just one extra day off.
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 03:30 PM) I would say it's equally old considering it's almost 150 years since the Civil War and things like this are still happening in America...when I was teaching in Colombia, my students were constantly asking me why the U.S. government was treating all the people in New Orleans so poorly after Hurricane Katrina, and I didn't have a good response for them. YOU CAN'T SAY SUCH THINGS. YOU'RE MEAN.
  9. QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 01:29 PM) Alcantara down to .679 now and this is coming off a game of 2/3 with a double. Baez down to .784 and dropping fast. Amazingly, he has no walks in 37 at-bats. He's going to give 2010 Dayan Viciedo a run for his money in the walk category. Also, no homers yet outside Coors. I think some Cubs' fans are starting to come to the realization that IF these guys turn out to be studs, it's still a few years down the line. I think most Cubs' fans thought as soon as they brought these guys up, they were going to have an immediate impact and top 5 offense in baseball as a result but never underestimate the growing pains that come with the jump from the minors to the majors, especially when expectations are enormous (unless you're mike trout, who is the very exception to every rule) My usually more hesitant cub fan friend dropped a wait tip next year post on FB yesterday. Yeah, no.

  11. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 05:27 PM) If any contender wants him after his first good outing, trade him. Get rid of him ASAP. Because you haven't complained enough about the bullpen this year?
  12. This impressive bit of photography is making the rounds.
  13. QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 04:30 PM) 2011 draft update. Ick http://www.sheridanhoops.com/2014/08/12/be...11-draft-class/ Really, aside from the lack of a top flight star does that really seem that bad if you go 1-32? How does it compare to other years on something like a "total wins" number? You've got guys like Butler, Leonard, and Thompson coming in fairly late who are pretty solid contributors.
  14. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 02:35 PM) He's clearly a quality contributor to the pen. However, as I've said all along, he was one of the worst opening day "closers" in baseball. I hope Sox bring Lindstrom back next year to a fair deal. He is a guy that works in a good pen. IMO, this is in no small part because he had no spring training and they didn't act like it. He was also a potential "backup" closer option if the other closer option wasn't out for the season.
  15. QUOTE (Tmar @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 01:52 PM) Yeah imo Stewart obviously was trying to f*** with the guy and it sure did backfire. No-one will ever be able to prove it with all the excuses of poor lighting, visibility, dirt track that's hard to control, and Tony will never admit it. But I think he knew what he was doing, didn't mean for it to kill the guy obviously, but he'll have to live with knowing that the rest of his life, so that is probably punishment enough Again, it's been stated that a common thing drivers do during a confrontation such as that will be to accelerate away from the confrontation to prevent it from escalating. You may well be right but this entire thread ought to demonstrate that it's certainly not "obvious".
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 12:02 PM) But it does go to show that even the most successful franchises believe in the value of the presence of veteran players on a roster, even if their performances aren't up to historical norms. if you really want to do that in this thread...Paul Konerko has been the team captain and veteran presence on a team that has spent more than half a decade consistently underperforming projections and disappointing in its results. Guys who were supposed to benefit from his guidance, like our current 2b, have been utter disappointments.
  17. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 11:14 AM) I could support that. I also remember a pretty good offense in the mid 2000's that had Carlos Lee, Paul Konerko, Magglio, Frank Thomas, etc. If you have good hitters, you can get by. Would you like a lefty sure, but you shouldn't just sign a lesser player because he's a lefty. You can try to be creative to find that guy. For whatever reason I keep wondering if Carlos Gonzalez is a guy they are looking at. It's also worth noting that offense faced 3 right-handed starters in the playoffs and a bunch of right handed relievers, with only 1 lefty appearing in the 3 games (Arthur Rhodes). That offense was then pretty effectively shut down in 3 games and slunk home.
  18. QUOTE (Tmar @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 11:41 AM) wat, that doesn't happen. it's only whiteys killing ma babies Are you African American?
  19. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 02:48 PM) For some reason, I doubt that Leury Garcia is going to be the cleanup hitter moving forward. Abreu is not going to get that treatment. What I'm wondering is this...with all the struggles Flowers has had this year, why is no one in this thread suggesting that the Sox give Phegley a look? Wilkins's line is at .295/.338/.570/.909, yet Phegley's at .286/.344/.550/.894 in the same ballpark. And, on top of that, Phegley's done this 2 years in a row and is virtually the same age as Wilkins. Andy Wilkins's defense and pitch calling while mostly DHing and occasionally relieving Abreu at 1b would matter a whole lot less than Phegley's defense while at the plate. Every time he's been mentioned it seems like that's what they focus on now.
  20. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 10:56 AM) Sorry, Butler has been a better player then Dunn the past 4 seasons. This year Butler has had a down year though but Butler is a much more complete player then Dunn at the plate. Butler is actually capable of hitting good pitching, something I have pretty much zero faith in Dunn doing. Here's the biggest problem. Billy Butler would likely be unable to do any of those things if he hit left handed, which is what the white Sox need to add somewhere in the middle of this order.
  21. 5 run first inning for Verlander before he's pulled with shoulder soreness after 1inning, when coming off that long extra inning game yesterday.
  22. QUOTE (LDF @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 07:45 PM) some team can claim him, then they would have to work out a trade with the mets, if no agreement then the mets could withdraw him. is that correct? If it is correct maybe the asking price is too much. Yes, however the asking price shouldn't play into whether or not the guy is claimed on waivers, only whether or not the trade could be concluded afterwards. Once he has cleared waivers he could be traded to your biggest rival, whomever your team is, and that could cost you a playoff birth. The right strategy for every team in the playoff hunt would be to claim guys who you'd be willing to accept if they were given to you in order to at least keep them from your opposition. We do always hear about how teams try to "Sneak" guys through waivers, or whatever that means. Perhaps it happened here.
  23. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 07:43 PM) I'm looking for good hole in the wall places to try, which I know NY is a mecca of. Basically, just want to see if someone has a, you have to go here for breakfast or must have pizza from here or best steak in the planet or best manhattan clam chowder ever. I've been to NY before but Lombardi's was about the only place I can remember that I specifically tried that is pretty well known. We are fare game for cuisine. Wife has never been to NYC. Supposedly the "Best steak on the planet" might well be Peter Lugar's, just below the Brooklyn Bridge. I have not been. You're unlikely to go wrong finding any hole in the wall nearby wherever you are. If it's been open in NYC for a while there's a reason why. I did that several times and was quite content with the results each time.
  24. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 05:47 PM) According to some, that's the same amount of attention to detail Ventura shows for statistical analysis of other teams and individual match-ups. (Rimshot)
