QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 23, 2014 -> 03:13 PM) Is that because we will intercept the nukes lobbed our way? Any chance there could be a 9/11 type incident involving them polluting our water supplies? Any chance a disease like ebola wipes everything out like the last great Planet of Apes movie? It's pretty obvious we are ruining our own environment little by little. When is that gonna be irreversable? Why have chances decreased? That nutjob in North Korea ... Putin ... and what about China? Are the Chinese out to conquer the world ultimately? Just some threats. The idea that this compares to 30,000 Soviet nuclear warheads pointing at the U.S. is absolutely f***ing crazy.

Yeah, so this department isn't exactly covering itself in pride these days.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 11:06 PM) It's amazing how nearly every pitcher has underachieved this year, yet Cooper receives very little criticism on here. People probably just love his radio interviews. Sale, Quintana, Noesi, Carroll, Putnam, Petricka. If you can find a way to blame Johnson on him then I'll go along with that, that remains by far the biggest implosion on the staff this year, but several pitchers have gotten better or out-performed expectations.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 09:47 PM) L. Garcia can't shine Paulie's shoes. Which is strange because they're similar hitters against RHP. Maybe Konerko's shoes are just that dirty.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 08:02 PM) Danks living on the edge so far. You can't stop yourself from fallin'

QUOTE (The Wiz @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 08:06 PM) Thanks for your input Kenny Williams/Rick Hahn I'd say if anything if Semien shows he can play a solid SS over the next couple weeks and in September, the odds of Alexei getting traded do nothing but increase. And this offseason is probably the time to sell high on Ramirez as you will likely never get as much for him as you can this offseason. They seemed really intent on not giving Semien time at SS earlier this season but he's gotten a decent amount of time there since Saladino got hurt. I'm not sure what that means for him.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 06:20 PM) And to add to that 20 of those players have at least 400 ABs....Dunn has 343....14 of em have more than 443. Yeah, but Dunn wouldn't have many more if he had another 100 PA's. Might not have any more.

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 05:18 PM) Do we know what information the cops had before they arrived? Did they even know there was someone with a knife or did they just know someone had stolen something? Also did they know exactly who they were looking for as they pulled up? According to the statement by the police, two 911 calls both stated that the suspect was armed with a knife.

This piece at Reddit does a convincing job of arguing that the police made multiple mistakes in the suicide by cop case that forced them into a position where they had to shoot. The writer argues that they parked way too close, putting themselves in a position where the moment they exited the car they were within the danger-range for a person with a knife, they didn't retreat and actually moved closer to the person escalating again, parked in a position where there were bystanders behind the guy with the knife such that if he hadn't moved there would have been innocent people at risk if they had to shoot, and made no effort to de-escalate the situation after their arrival by moving back or trying to find safer positions.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 04:33 PM) Yes I meant wiping ourselves out more than the actual disintegration of the earth. If you're worried about this, you should be relieved at how much the chances of it happening have decreased over the past 25 years.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 12:09 PM) http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-leag...-125552399.html Classy Cubs Thankfully there are no recently memorable issues resulting from the work of that grounds crew.

QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 09:18 PM) Anyone hear any names in return? I seen Hahn's comments about evaluating but I'd imaging they've been doing that Teams almost never let those kinds of lists leak because they wouldn't want a prospect who isn't traded to know that their name was on the list.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 08:20 PM) I am tired of Eric Holder picking and choosing what he wants and does not want to enforce. Worst AG in US history. I agree. It's still ridiculous that there are no bankers in jail from the 2008 collapse and no one in jail from the torture program. Something tells me you weren't thinking of that.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 06:39 PM) What do you do if you are the remaining journalist there waiting to die? Do you ask them to go ahead and kill you to get it over with? Or do you pray for a miracle and they release you or the U.S. troops find you? If you had access to poison would you kill yourself rather than let those bastards behead you? This story saddens me to no end. Animals over there. F*** no.

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 08:14 PM) Actually I agree but to decree Johnson as the starting 2B for 2015 is the equivalent of pre-mature ejaculation. As long Alexei is at SS, Johnson has very stiff competetition from Sanchez and Semien for starting at 2B in 2015. I would not rule out the idea of Johnson being shifted to the outfield either. Like a day ago the Sox said they see Micah as a long term 2b.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 06:12 PM) What's the biggest need of this team? It's the rotation. We may not have the coin to get a quality free agent DH. It might be the most efficient route to go internally. Not in free agency it won't be.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 06:11 PM) Josh Fields and Brian Anderson have to be a part of this conversation, too. Just look at what position they were drafted at for why they're not nearly this disappointing.
-
QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 06:08 PM) Borchard? I believe his bonus was a lot more and he did nothing, except hit the longest HR I've seen in a game at the Cell. Beckham at least brought defense. Beckham's defense has been poor the last couple years. Borchard never did what Beckham did right after being called up.

Thus ends the most disappointing career of a white sox player I can remember.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 04:55 PM) We saw that work very successfully with Chris Sale, Jose Quintana, and Jake Peavy. You're supposed to disagree with me and tell me how awful it is for people to get any days off.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 04:56 PM) I think some folks are maybe overreacting to Bassitt a bit. I like him, I think I had him around 20 or 22 on my list of prospects, just as he was starting his return. He looks healthy which is great, but I can't see a legit argument having him any higher than the bottom of the teens. He's got a very good fastball, and nothing else above average, unless he's made large scale changes recently. Especially with what else this org has in the pitching department, I think there's a good chance they're going to do the "work him as a starter then bring him up as a reliever" route.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 04:38 PM) Then shut him down. Team is beyond horrible and out of it. Rest him for next year. I am all for winning as many games as possible, but he's had a nice comeback season. Shut him down. If Danks is exhausted now, then shutting him down now could also lead to him being exhausted at around this time next year. If he's that tired, then skip a start, that's fine and maybe a good idea to keep him from getting hurt via overexertion, but don't shut him down.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 03:15 PM) Yes, I'm a little surprised to see that as well. For years I've read stories of the overuse/abuse of tasers and other less-than-lethal (but not always) methods. The difference with tasers is that they should be treated as "less lethal weapons". If you're in a situation where you can substitute it for a lethal shot with relative ease, it makes sense. If you're in a situation where say, you have an unruly person in a library or a person refusing to get off the sidewalk...unless you would have shot that person for not listening to your instructions then you're using the taser not as a defensive weapon/substitute but instead as a method of inflicting pain until a person listens to you. Simple rule; if you'd have shot the person otherwise, a taser is a great option to consider if possible. If you would not, then you're putting that person's life in danger with the weapon.

Jose Abreu does the ice bucket challenge
Balta1701 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 03:10 PM) I have no issues with the ice bucket challenge, nor do I have an issue with donating to ALS research, but I do want to go off topic for just a moment to plug the fact that over 10 times as many people die from prostate/breast cancer as ALS. MLB has a prostate cancer awareness/funding tie in with Fathers Day ever year. -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 02:33 PM) And supposedly even when they stick properly a certain % of people aren't affected by them. And a certain %age of people wind up dead.
