QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 1, 2014 -> 09:26 AM) Also, on a serious note, who was the last free agent starting pitcher the White Sox signed to a large contract? Jamie Navarro? I do believe there's a reason for that. Perhaps several reasons. "They're really good at developing their own starting pitching even using other teams castoffs" plays into it, as does the not wanting to give contracts to guys likely to be hurt. They still have several castoffs from other teams with potential this year even if people don't want to admit it.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 1, 2014 -> 03:15 AM) This Detroit domination thing is growing old. Are they going to win our division 18 years in a row or whatever the Braves did to their division in that one streak? It's really disgusting a city like fricking Detroit has built a team good enough to win this thing year after year. They are already six in the loss column ahead of the Sox with a very flawed team, which is not good. It's about over, in fact, where everybody will be rooting for our draft pick again.Six in the loss column is getting up there. No. Next year it gets a whole lot tougher for them. The contracts are just piling up and they're starting to lose people because of it. They're a step back this year still and people might have had a shot at them if there was a competitive team in the division. They're in a lucky place where their competitors are all weak. That won't last forever.

QUOTE (beautox @ May 1, 2014 -> 01:12 AM) Its a shame that Johnson likely won't be moving up to AAA for a while until the major league roster sorts itself out. As for Ravelo if he keeps raking he is going to force their hand and supplant Wilkins in a minute. Johnson shouldn't move up to Charlotte yet no matter what. He's been in AA for 2 months. He's been great but you want to give him a chance to either have consistent success there or to have some struggles and get through them.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 08:53 PM) I think they may have fixed whatever the issue was. He looked good for three innings. I am not sure at this point in time he should be considered as a starter. If for no other reason then he isn't stretched out for more than 3 innings If he can't be sent down without clearing waivers and he's not stretched out right now, the only way To stretch him out is to put him out for 3+ today and 4+ next week.

Shame, I thought we'd wind up picking up the options on Sale and Quintana. I'll be sorry to see them released.
-
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 07:31 PM) Why are you so adverse to adding a pitcher better than Quintana. Because it's really hard to do. Scherzer is about the only one that fits that description.
-
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 07:01 PM) Plan B it is then, sign a #3, trade for a top starting prospect to pair with the #3 pick. Or just get Marty to admit that Jose Quintana is already a #2 starter.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 05:28 PM) What's the problem with signing a pitcher better than Q.? Out of the available options who would be plausible? Is there another big time Japanese starter maybe available next fall? If not, particularly from the RH side, it's Scherzer at $200 million, Lester at maybe a similar amount although that makes no sense as he's a lefty, or perhaps Shields at a slightly lower amount. But of course, if you actually look at his numbers, Quintana in his early to now mid 20's is only a tiny step behind what the veteran James Shields has done the last couple years, and so if you take into account you're getting his aged 33-37ish seasons, you're unlikely to get a better pitcher than Quintana over that deal. So in order to sign someone better than Quintana this offseason, it's either a Japanese pitcher I don't know about who becomes available, or it's Scherzer.

QUOTE (LDF @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 05:51 PM) you know, that is a good point you made, thanks. Rangel is one of my fav players, I still would like to see if he can convert to being a outfielder. Giving him some OF time makes more sense than expecting him to become a 3b again, I'll grant that, but there are again a bunch of caveats. Maybe they want him focusing on just one position right now, maybe they want him focusing on getting better with the bat right now rather than learning another new position.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 05:20 PM) It's going to be interesting to see how they assemble the rotation over the next couple of years. Outside of Johnson, there's nothing in the minors. Do they sign a top free agent, slot him at #2, Q at #3 or take a longer-term approach by signing a FA at #3, deal for a top pitching prospect and pair that guy with who they take in the draft. Still on this schtick no matter how many times you've been called out for it I see.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 04:41 PM) I like Victor, but he is going to get PAID. If we are spending money anywhere, I want a corner OF, 3B, or SP. Really, a 36 year old who already had a major injury is going to command a big, all-caps level contract?

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 03:13 PM) Ventura left him out to die...really awful managing once again if you're going to have a bullpen game. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 03:17 PM) Noesi ended up allowing more runs that innings pitched...predictable. Sad thing is I'm sure they'll be stubborn and keep him on the roster. Pick one. Should Noesi be rewarded for the fact that he went 3 innings and then possibly tired out as you said in your first one or should he be released from the roster for giving up runs in the 4th inning when robin "left him out to die".

Gillaspie to DL, Noesi to active roster

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 02:57 PM) If they don't send down Semien start full time, they send down Garcia. With 2 infielders coming up, my guess is those 2 infielders go down. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 02:31 PM) It will be an interesting position. Semien has to be playing every day. Are the White Sox going to bench Gordo for Semein once Gillaspie is back? You have to assume that Conor is the starter at 3rd. 2nd could be interesting. I can't see Danks going down because they won't have a true back up OF in that case. It would almost have to be a pitcher sent out at that point. I'd guess one of the RH relievers goes, depending on how guys are pitching. You didn't mention Leury? -
2016 Summer Olympics preparations 'worst' seen

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 02:17 PM) In a worst case scenario, you might not have a choice. The other option would be to see what facilities were left at a recent host, such as London or Bejing, and try there. Good excuse to add this link. -
QUOTE (scs787 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 02:13 PM) Spanky is a boss in CF. Wasn't everyone saying he was below average out there? FWIW, DRS has him slightly positive and UZR has him slightly negative so far this season.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 11:54 AM) Daryl Van Schouwen @CST_soxvan 8m Ventura looking for 50-60 pitches from starter Noesi today. Pitch counts are worthless anyway.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 01:16 PM) I'm in agreement with you on the standards I would find acceptable. And I care, but only in the sense that this should be used as an example of how not to do things going forward. We should learn from it. We shouldn't stop the practice all together because this guy suffered for a few minutes before ultimately dying. That's all i'm saying. Then this cannot be your reaction. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 10:31 AM) Boo. f***ing. Hoo. It infuriates me that you people feel sympathy for these animals.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 12:58 PM) Well, agree to disagree. If all you're looking at is the result than our entire justice system tortures criminals because on occasion they hurt themselves and/or are hurt while in our control 100% of the time. I don't think this is torture. That's why I kept putting "torture" in quotes. I think this is a horribly inhumane convicted criminal who was caused to suffer for minutes by an accident. It was not done purposefully. It was not done with delight. It was an accident and if the accident had not occurred he would not have suffered at all. Here's a bigger problem for you; a person like me. I'm somewhat sympathetic on the death penalty in general. I think it can meet the 8th amendment standard, I don't think there's much good that comes from it...but if it gives the families of some crime victims some measure of "closure" for whatever that's worth I could be convinced that it's a tolerable evil. But the only way I'd be willing to go along with it is if it's well administered. There has to be an overwhelming standard of guilt to avoid killing innocent people (which has almost certainly happened), it needs to be administered fairly/without the obvious racial biases that occur in cases right now, and it can't involve processes that clearly demolish the 8th amendment, as this case did. If you don't care about how it happens when things go wrong, then you don't get any consideration from me for support and I have every reason to be disgusted with the death penalty.

QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 10:06 AM) Why is it so difficult to knock someone off in a reasonably quick and painless way? These supposedly humane methods like gas chambers and lethal injection seem needlessly complicated and prone to being botched. How about like 5 ambien to knock them out and then a bullet to the brain/decapitation while they're asleep? Apparently part of the problem in this one was in the first step, the "5 ambien to knock them out" step.

So...Oklahoma killed a man last night in a way that makes Thomas Edison's elephant electrocution look humane.

A bit of back of the envelope math suggests that by forcing Sterling to sell, he'll be out about $100 million on the cap. gains tax hit compared to the estate tax hit he'd have to take passing the Clippers on after death.

Is Adam Dunn necessarily a goner after this year?
Balta1701 replied to VAfan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 12:19 AM) What about Billy Butler for DH. If he continues this lousy year, sign him 3 years 8 million a year. Have Butler DH and Abreu remain at first. He has a 12.5 million club option for next year which the Royals are too cheap to match. The Royals will absolutely be picking that option up unless Butler destroys his body somehow in the next few months. -
QUOTE (TRU @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 05:52 PM) Of course it wouldn't, were 27 games into the season. Took less time than that for some people to declare that Paulino and Johnson were complete lost-causes.
