Chris Sale to start Thu May 22 vs Yankees
Balta1701 replied to Feeky Magee's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ May 7, 2014 -> 08:58 AM) Maybe more, if you look at pitchers who has such a violent delivery and who also have the thin frame he has, while throwing as hard as he does. The 3 elbow issues he had in the past 3 years are not fluke injuries, they most likely are results of him repeating a highly stressful delivery for 100 times every 5 days. Whatever the outcome this latest injury is, we should take it as a warning sign. It would be miraculous if he avoid any serious elbow injuries over the next 3 years. I hope I am wrong, but I am not liking the chances. Again, you're still not defining your terms, giving examples, or giving me any reason to believe this. How many pitchers are there with comparable deliveries? You're not even working on anecdotes right now, working on anecdotes would be naming a couple guys with similar deliveries who did get hurt. You're just saying what your gut tells you about his delivery. -

QUOTE (juddling @ May 7, 2014 -> 07:55 AM) As much as i've been enjoying S.H.I.E.L.D, I still think The Blacklist qualifies as my favorite new show...........last few episodes have been great and Spader is money.... If only Marvel could find a role for Spader... Seriously it's another good one. I'd pick Shield out of the 2 but won't begrudge you that choice one bit, both have been really well done.

So yeah...tell Chris to take it easy, would be nice to see if the pieced together pieces can keep this up. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 25, 2014 -> 06:39 PM) Just so it's stated every time someone says this...no he isn't. He was a plus defender there in 2011 but he has gotten progressively worse there every season. He's at best average, maybe even slightly below average there. He turns the DP well but his range has decreased and he's gotten sloppier. He committed 12 errors at 2b last year while playing only 100 games, making him one of the sloppiest 2b in the league. Just to say it...he had a worse fielding percentage than Dan Uggla! After that just pathetic play by Beckham last inning I felt like bumping this.

There's a good example of what I have been saying for like 8 months about Beckham's defense. Nice work Noesi.

QUOTE (flavum @ May 6, 2014 -> 09:37 PM) He should be out right now. Let's see what happens with the pitcher.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 6, 2014 -> 09:34 PM) Robin are you going to come out of the dugout tonight? Are you kidding? Do you know how old that concrete in those steps is? Would you feel safe walking on it?
-
QUOTE (Tex @ May 6, 2014 -> 07:29 PM) Robin still has a job, so he's been getting a free pass. They didn't listen to me on that one.

QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ May 6, 2014 -> 07:49 PM) Injuries can happen to ANY pitcher, or any professional athlete for that matter. But the combination of his frame and delivery makes him more susceptible to injury than 90% of the pitchers in baseball. How do you come up with that number? Are you sure it's not 75%? 60%? What fraction of the more at-risk pitchers gets injured and on what average timescale? -
QUOTE (Tex @ May 6, 2014 -> 07:35 PM) If that was true, the plane would have been found amiright? No. They could be looking in the right area and it simply is way too hard, IMO. They are at the limits of the equipment they have in a very difficult area to hunt. They are searching for metal debris that could be spread out over wide areas and which probably impacted the sediment with force. Even in the right area this is a tough hunt.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 6, 2014 -> 04:49 PM) Robin seems to get a free pass since the Sox talent has been declining, though he still had a contender his first year. If there's one thing I've given Robin it's a free pass, right?

He was significantly better than his linescore today, I'll elaborate when I get an article together later this week.

Kris Bryant pulled in the 3rd inning for the Smokies.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 5, 2014 -> 05:58 PM) If Eaton made that same exact play (or Rowand) throwing himself into the wall and coming up inches short of a catch, everyone would be saying how tough and gritty he was...the only difference is that Eaton would probably be out for 2-3 months at his size, not just a couple of days. I get it, his numbers are up, so it's a lot harder to criticize him statistically. Um, I think a lot of people are saying Eaton overdoes it with the aggressiveness already to the point of being stupid.

QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ May 5, 2014 -> 04:14 PM) Jack. Bauer. Tonight. That is all. I'd have been more pumped about this 10 years ago.

sox need to trade alexei once out of contention

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 5, 2014 -> 02:55 PM) What I am saying is if the White Sox felt like they had the SS of the future on their current roster, I don't think Alexei would play every inning of every game to this point, although he has been on fire. I really disagree with this. It's just how the White Sox have operated with Alexei, they play him non-stop. If Semien goes down to AAA and keeps playing 2b and 3b, when those positions already have Sanchez and Davidson on them, that will tell a lot more IMO. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 5, 2014 -> 02:45 PM) I would agree with this. As I stated and you stated, you have to make sure he can play the position before you trade Alexei. So far, the Sox haven't tried doing that at all which to me means they either aren't going to trade Alexei or if they are, Semien doesn't appear to be their first option replacing him. Worth adding though that the Sox haven't been in a position where they've had the option to try playing him there. They've been playing Semien everyday at 2 positions already; the SS is the only one who hasn't been hurt. With the 2b and 3b both going down, there's been literally zero chance for them to work him at SS. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 5, 2014 -> 02:29 PM) He also played 3B before Gillaspie went down. He's also a righty and the 3b is a lefty who has trouble hitting lefties. The current SS is a righty so it is difficult to use a platoon there with another player who also bats righty. The ideal setup this year would have been Semien starting at SS in Charlotte working to see if he could really handle the position. Alas injuries have delayed that, but it is still what should happen in a couple days when DL guys start returning. If he can't handle the position then that makes trading Alexei much tougher. It would however certainly be nice to see how he does if given that position to focus on for several months before it even becomes a reasonable option. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 5, 2014 -> 02:11 PM) Supposedly there is a real possibility no college SS will be drafted in the top 250 this year. So if you are trading Alexei, you better have some sort of alternative in your system or some available option moving forward, or you could be looking at crap at SS for the White Sox for a long time. The alternative, as it stands now, would be Marcus Semien. -
QUOTE (Jerksticks @ May 5, 2014 -> 01:41 PM) Yea he's silently badass. So if you'd clearly take mike trout over Gomez then I ask what has WAR really told you? The ability to put a number on "how much better". You can look at their stats and say "yes, Mike Trout was better, but was he 25% better, 50% better, 75% better, etc." and have that be a valid question. In fact, it's hugely important on the free agent market...just imagine hypothetically that both of them hit the free agent market this offseason and your team needs a CF. How much of an impact would it make if you spent $40 mil/year on Trout versus $20-$25 mil a year on Gomez? Is that a good buy? If you spend that money, how much impact will it make on your team? If you go for the cheaper guy could that cost you a couple wins and wind your team up missing the wild card with 87 wins when Trout could have put you over the top? The same comparison works for pitchers as well. If you're trying to weigh the impact of a pitcher versus the impact of a hitter, it's really hard if you don't have a standardized basis by which they can be compared. Pitcher x looks good and my rotation is week, but I also have a hole at 3b. If I go cheap at one position and pricey at the other, which one makes a bigger difference to my team?

If we traded for a stud RH starter this year who would it be?

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 4, 2014 -> 05:05 PM) Then give 'em Beckham and a prospect. They are in last place. So your response to being told they wouldn't accept horse manure for McCarthy is to offer them cow instead? -
QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ May 4, 2014 -> 03:08 PM) It's gonna really suck if they get beaten by the Cubs. It would help the Sox set up for a better draft pick than the Cubs again this year.
