  1. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 11:14 AM) I bet Hahn isn't defending Paulino as much as you Balta. Gotta tip my hat to you. I bet Astros fans aren't whining nearly as much as you about the fact that they have a hole at the back of their rotation. I'll give you a tip of the cap for keeping the faith.
  2. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 11:10 AM) 1-year contracts must be the new market inefficiency the Sox will exploit when the time to spend isn't stupid. Why would the White Sox sign people to 1 year contracts to build a competitive team? You sign people to limited contracts when you have a team filled with rookies so that you can trade guys and avoid strangling yourself in the future. You turn that around and risk the longer-term deals when you have a team that could be competitive if it filled its last 1-2 holes.
  3. Boxer Rubin "the Hurricane" Carter, the man the authorities came to blame for something that he never done, died at age 76.
  4. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 10:01 AM) This criterea for spending money is too narrow when you have a farm system as empty as the Sox have. They're going to lose whatever advantage the Abreu and Sale contracts give them if they wait for this system to fill a hole or two before spending money. Why are posters so against spending money? We're not. We're against spending it at a stupid time.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 09:04 AM) And he is clearly only signed to a one year deal, and not a six. Wait, so you agree with Marty that after signing him the White Sox were ready to field a competitive team this year?
  6. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 10:16 AM) It's the middle of April and the Sox are unwatchable in large part because of the the crater-sized hole in the rotation that a lot of posters new existed even after the Paulino signing. Payroll flexibility ain't gonna fill the seats. Of course, Marty also checked to make sure that during their recent struggles they were continuing to hit well on offense and not putting up a sub-.600 team OPS over the last week. Because if they had put up a sub-.600 OPS over the last week and Marty was complaining about them being unwatchable because of the starting rotation, why he'd just look like a fool.
  7. Just really good work at the plate tonight by Viciedo.
  8. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 10:33 PM) Yeah he does. He definitely trots. I bet Hawk thinks "you earn that right" or something equally dubious. One thing I always loved about Thome. Just as fast as Konerko but always have a clear all out sprint to first.
  9. Jose having some better square swings tonight.
  10. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 10:17 PM) Just waiting for the thread saying the Sox should have kept Buehrle instead of signing Paulino. You know it's coming. Toronto would still trade Buehrle for Paulino straight up happily.
  11. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 10:29 PM) You have to pay really close attention to tell the difference between PK running hard to 1b and PK trotting to 1b. One of them involves a shoulder drop. But seriously, Konerko makes it obvious.
  12. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 10:16 PM) Abreu is relatively young, costs no talent, is controlled for the long term, and has sky high upside by all accounts. You are not paying a premium for past performance (see: non-Latin American free agents). He would be considered part of the core, not a peripheral/secondary piece. Same goes for Tanaka, within reason. The Yankees, of course, are rarely reasonable. Out of the 2, Tanaka was clearly more advanced when signed despite Abreu being a bit older. Better competition and better coaching. The White Sox are still covering some of the basics of 1b footwork with Abreu because he hasn't been taught correctly before. Tanaka has had professional pitching coaches before and it is showing already.
  13. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 09:52 PM) Opinion on the Abreu signing as it relates to not being the right time for significant cash outlay? Abreu was 1 for his last 25 coming into today. Clearly he needed no time for adjustment and was ready to carry a team to the playoffs from day 1.
  14. A really good job of laying off stuff out of the zone by Viciedo
  15. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 09:45 PM) Nooooooo... But probably. I would rather see if Mitchell can find some kind of luck Mitchell and Trayce are both on the 40 man.
  16. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 09:39 PM) Well, that would have been something if Avi hit that grounder. That reminded me of a physics problem of a small mass bouncing off a much larger mass elastically.
  17. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 09:34 PM) What is significant monetary risk and why is this not the time when there is very definitely the need? Would a single player, or perhaps even 2 players (>$20 million a year) have put this team in contention this year? LOL
  18. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 09:31 PM) He had extra day of rest with off day. Most of the fastballs I've seen from him are 90 and that's well below what his pitchFX fastball has been the last couple games. The results speak for themselves.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 09:27 PM) His fastballs down a little bat from last year. I can't believe the bottom of the Rangers lineup, which resembles a AAA team, is destroying the Sox. His fastball the last couple games was right in a reasonable range with where he was last year, but I will agree with you he's down a bit tonight. But as the announcers keep pointing out, he threw 122 pitches last time out.
  20. QUOTE (Baron @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 09:10 PM) Paul wouldnt have been able to outrun that period. Conor might have been able to. Not the point.
  21. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 09:09 PM) The league has adjusted to him, so it's time for him to make some adjustments. it's ok if this takes some time for him to learn how to adjust with the bats too. They already talked about how he worked on and was improving on his footwork commitment at 1b after those couple early errors in Colorado. The good news is this is a rebuilding year.
  22. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 09:07 PM) 90% of his at bats he does it. And he usually does it on an 0-0 count or hitters count. I guess they don't have sliders in Cuba? Really not all that surprising, how many guys in the big leagues genuinely have solid, controllable sliders?
