Cuban OF Daniel Carbonell declares free agency

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 22, 2014 -> 01:16 PM) Exactly. They aren't dropping large coin on OF's right now. I wonder what "large coin" would be on this guy? -

It appears there's a very important deadline for him buried in there, from that article: -

QUOTE (sammy esposito @ Apr 22, 2014 -> 01:10 PM) DeAza could be replaced. HE hit those 2 hr in the first game and has went downhill and then leveled off below the Mendoza line. Dayan Viciedo Avisail Garcia With other possible guys down the line in the minors. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 22, 2014 -> 01:07 PM) That has no bearing on the COY vote. But it does have bearing on whether or not they start viewing a guy as an all time great.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 22, 2014 -> 12:12 PM) Why on earth would San Fran give up a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for the 14th pick? I understand the draft pick value, but that's a ton to give up in a draft that is absolutely loaded with talent. Their biggest needs moving forward are probably a rush linebacker because Aldon Smith is a psycho and defensive end because Justin Smith is getting older. They can satisfy both of those needs later in the draft. Frankly, I think EVERYONE wants to trade down in this draft. EDIT: The Niners could use a receiver too, but again, they can get that later in the draft. One thing to remember with San Fran is...they have so many picks there's a very good chance that if they used them all, they could not keep people on their roster. It's not like they're starved for talent already and they're sitting on enough picks to fill out 20% of a roster. It simply makes sense to move up on some of those for no other reason. Also...if a number of teams are considering moving down, that might push the price they need to pay to move up even lower.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 22, 2014 -> 12:45 PM) I respect the hell out of Popovich and I agree he deserves praise, but what the hell does Thibs need to do to get recognition? Put any other coach in charge of the bulls not named Popovich and this team crashes and burns hardcore. Thibs is the master of chicken salad out of chicken s*** At this point? Win a title.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Apr 22, 2014 -> 08:21 AM) So, the QBs are apparently falling down the board. Despite the team's needs on defense, is there a QB you take if he's there at 14? What if a team wants to trade up from the 30s to 14? No the Bears should not draft a 1st round QB. They should also not draft a 2nd round QB. If a team wants to trade up and gives the Bears a fair offer where they wind up with ~2 2nd rounders, they should absolutely do that. This is a deep enough draft where they ought to be able to find 2 starters (Safety and DT, for example) in 3 second round picks. If the Bears targeted a QB they liked in the 3rd round or after, I'd have zero issues with that.

I want to see Davidson. I just want to stress that Micah and Trayce still are starting seasons in AA. This is Micah's first arrival there and it's Trayce's first time having a solidly successful start. As usual the instinct is to push them higher immediately, but either of those guys making the bigs even in September requires them jumping Charlotte almost entirely

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 07:11 PM) The leap from the PCL to the IL appears to be substantial. Like others said...he got demoted and never had a shot at the bigs after making it last year. Mentally that's rough.

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 06:13 PM) Is the Triskelion still around? Decent corner bar about five blocks north of park. I think a helicarrier crashed into it.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 01:35 PM) They just got away with proactively "suspending" him last season and sending him to rehab. You would think they would wait this one out too Questions to ask before trying that are many though...how long might he be out for, how much will he cost in the interim, will he be able to participate in team activities at all during camps, how disruptive would his return be if it's only for a few games, what other action might Goodell take? -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 01:15 PM) Why don't the White Sox just listen to you?You knew Semien had no business leading off yesterday. You knew De Aza had no reason to be in the starting line up opening day. I agree with you. De Aza has been an effective ballplayer this year so far and we should gawk at his strong performance during this season.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 12:53 PM) Even with a decline in attendance and ad revenue... with the fact that salary obligations for next year are only around $50M, and the TV money boost from MLB, I'd say there is zero chance they don't spend some significant money this coming offseason. They may not be at $100M+, but I'd be shocked if they were lower than, say, $80M. Rock suggested in another thread that when they thought they were ready to compete, they could probably push $40 million a year higher. But my worry now is, with Garcia out for the year, there's a decent chance they could still wind up thinking of next year as rebuilding, depending on the progress other guys make.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 11:58 AM) Daryl Van Schouwen @CST_soxvan 4h White Sox closer Matt Lindstrom hasn't felt 100 percent physically all spring until last Wednesday. He's been much sharper since. Reads this, remembers that he was the annointed closer out of spring training, droops head.
-
QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 01:00 PM) Semien's defense is obvious, solid and average. He makes tough plays, but doesn't have much range and has an average arm. He's a lot like Beckham defensively. Worth thinking about though...he hasn't been a full time 2b, so his ability to cover a lot of ground will be impacted by his ability to read the ball off the bat. With additional time at 2b, it's plausible he could improve at that. He is certainly a solid athlete and he has the speed to cover a good amount of range, so if he's not showing range yet that tells me he isn't getting the best jumps on ground balls. With coaching and experience that could change.
-
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 10:56 AM) He should be able to catch the ball no matter how he's been coached. If no one has bothered to coach him the appropriate places to put his feet, that's going to impact his ability to catch the ball. We've already seen him start off horribly at that and seemingly begin improving.

White Sox currently tied for MLB lead in runs scored

For the week prior to last night's game they had a .586 OPS as a team. This team so far is impressive in their inconsistency. -

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 11:34 PM) His first start back is bound to have some problems. It will be interesting to see where he is at in the middle of May I wonder if those "Some problems" are due to him just wearing out in inning 4.
-
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 12:54 AM) Abreu is quick at first but he seems to have issues with the most basic of things, it's kind of bizarre. I don't think it's that bizarre at all. That's pretty much what you'd expect if a guy has never been coached about the right way to do things.
-
QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 09:32 PM) Abreu= PK Avi= Dye Davidson= Crede (hopefully) Alexei= Uribe Eaton= Pods Sale= Buehrle Jones= Cotts Pretty good foundation if you ask me...mix that with some FAs and Hawkins, maybe Thompson, Chris Beck, Micah Johnson, and guys like Zapata, high ranked international FAs (seems realistic with Paddy and going after Abreu and Tanaka) and our #3 draft pick and that may be a short lived dynasty or at the least very exciting SouthSide ball Micker Adolfo is what, 18 years old? If he's on the big league roster by 2019, that's fast moving for him.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 09:26 PM) Wait a second, is Iwakuma really going to be on the open market? He was kind of the sleeper pitcher of the year last season that nobody knows about. I think he has an option.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 08:31 PM) Quitting on the guy already? That has to be a new record. Well to be fair, he is cuban.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 04:58 PM) We already have Danks, Sale, Q for gosh sakes. Add one GOOD starter not named Paulino with the money bulging out of Jerry's pockets and a couple good relievers not named Downs and those other stiffs and what about my post isn't true?? There has to be some accountability. Four out of five starters in my scenario would be damn good starters. How many do you need?? Um...5?

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 05:31 PM) Last impact free agent the Sox signed was Albert Belle. Jermaine Dye never did a thing for this team.
