And no, don't rush the court for that. -

QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 07:16 PM) Enough already with the James Earl Jones / Malcolm McDowell commercials Or at least play the same one fewer times.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 07:17 PM) Mix this with the "super" teams, and the NBA is just a garbage product now a days. And now people finally come to realize why I hated the assembly of the Heat so much.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 05:12 PM) Agree, the system has gone from bottom feeder to mid-tier, probably in the 18-19 range now. There is still work to be done, but based on draft position and international money available, its not out of the realm of possibility that this is a top 10 system a year from now. Semien, Webb, and Davidson all likely graduate, perhaps EJ depending on the ST competition with Surkamp and Paulino and if there are injuries. Semien is simply not big league ready right now IMO. Webb, maybe not, they loaded up the bullpen like they thought he needed more AAA time as well.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 01:13 PM) EJ is the closest pitcher to the show, but I think his upside is probably a back of the rotation arm. Semien is a solid prospect, close to being ready, just isn't really exceptional at one thing. Here's my two differences with you. No idea why EJ is thought to be "only a back of the rotation arm". His stuff is legitimate and he's had solid success at every level. He doesn't have Chris Sale stuff but I don't know why you'd judge from what we've seen so far that he's only a back of the rotation arm. Secondly...Semien is pretty exceptional in his batting eye/approach, based on his AA numbers from last year. Getting a guy from the middle infield who can work a count into his favor and force a pitcher to either walk him or throw a hittable pitch is a skill we've missed a lot and he's shown a lot of promise in that.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 01:35 PM) To me, Abreu will be overlooked in top 100 prospect lists and put somewhere in the 40's or 50's though he should be higher. Erik Johnson should land somewhere in the 50-75 range. Davison should be 85-100. Semien will be all over the place. Some lists will exclude him others will have him. I don't see Anderson making many lists. If the Rangers had signed Abreu for the same money we did I'd assume he'd be #1.

Keep cheering for me and at some point perhaps I might be a college professor. But alas, I am not. (walks away crying).

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 01:23 PM) Looking for advice, not sure if here or travel thread. Going to Canada for 4 days this weekend. We'll be traveling around a bit so I'd like to have data on my phone to search directions and look up stuff to do rather than only have things queued up from wifi in hotel. Sprint offers some data packs for canada, $30 for 55mb. I use about 16/day here in US. Do you think I'd use more or less on vacation? My feeling is more but being conscious about data means I'd probably only look if necessary. Plus would not be streaming music to/from work like now. THoughts? There is a 16mb plan as well. Does your hotel actually have wifi? If it does you can get by with planning "most" things and most tasks while on hotel wifi and occasionally use the phone on the road when you actually need it. Also how often do you obsessively check things like Facebook and Soxtalk?

Despite his public statements in defiance of the idea that he might feel some guilt over the blood spilled worldwide from the weapon he designed, in a private letter to a church leader, Mikhail Kalashnikov (designer of the AK-47) wrote that he was being tormented by guilt over the deaths. The church official wrote back providing him some absolution on the grounds that he designed the weapon to protect the fatherland. A totally different perspective on the man from that which he presented in public.

2013-14 off season player movement thread

QUOTE (flavum @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 10:42 AM) Mariners close to signing John Buck. So there goes that Plan C or D. They just spent a ton of money bringing in Cano to at least pretend to put a competitive roster out there this year. He makes a ton more sense for them if they have no other warm bodies at catcher than he does for us. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 09:33 AM) Forsythe costs nothing financially and can play 2B/3B/SS/LF/RF. Keppinger costs $4+ mill and can play 2B/3B/1B. You tell me which one you are going to inquire about. At the very least, the Yankees aren't going to take on $4 million when they're $26 million under the luxury tax and then find out later that Tanaka's going rate next year is $23 million. Keppinger would either cost them Tanaka or like $15 million in luxury tax payments next year alone.

QUOTE (woods of ypres @ Jan 13, 2014 -> 11:54 PM) I know Fangraphs broke down his swings, but has any of the sabr sites ever attempted a projection of JDA? The thread is a long, long time ago (before he was signed) but when people applied one of those "league conversion" metrics to the numbers he put up in Cuba and asked how those numbers projected to the U.S., his projected numbers compared favorably to Miguel Cabrera's. That could mean one of two things. Either he'll come in and hit an awful lot like a hall of famer right out of the gate, or the numbers he's put up in Cuba are so incredible that there's really no comparison and the assumptions of how the league scales break down when you're destroying a league like he did.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 13, 2014 -> 05:15 PM) Found on Deadspin http://deadspin.com/white-sox-hotel-list-r...ames-1500530664 Some of these are awesome and it's really damn hard to figure out who is who. There's an Art Vandelay.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 13, 2014 -> 05:13 PM) To be fair, in a world where abortions are legal child support shouldn't exist. Because time travel.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 13, 2014 -> 05:08 PM) 1. Preferably in the middle of the strip. We've stayed at hooter and mgm before and just find it so far out of the way. Probably not one of the higher end ones. 2. Hmm. I do have cards at hollywood, Harrahs joliet, four winds. I think a few of those tie into Vegas hotels but not sure. I would guess Harrahs does. If you don't care about the hotel focus on what discount codes/packages you can find. I think the boards at fatwallet.com listed a lot of them and were kept updated, Smartervegas.com was the other one.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 13, 2014 -> 03:59 PM) People said the same thing about Rex Grossman!! In Wilson's current role, for the most part he can simply be a game manager. He does an absolutely great job of that and makes very few mistakes. People are just questioning that if the Seahawks were suddenly much more dependent on the passing game, would he perform as well? The thing is...IMO if you give a QB several seasons to grow into the role, he will gradually get better at it. Drew Brees didn't become DREW BREES over night. Tom Brady didn't become OMG TOM BRADY overnight. IIRC, when the Patriots won their first super Bowl, Brady was mostly doing the "Game managing" thing. Brady's rating, Yards/attempt were much lower in 2001, got better each year with experience, and even then he had Corey Dillon as a key runner in his final super bowl winning year. The more experience these guys get as the starter, the more likely they can make a "big jump" if they have the athletic ability and mental capacity to do so.

Weather this year still hasn't been all that bad historically.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 13, 2014 -> 11:12 AM) Yeah, I agree. It is really surprising that not a single NL club put in a claim on him, even if he just profiles as a 5th starter. How many had filled up their 40 man due to the rule 5 draft?

QUOTE (Paulstar @ Jan 13, 2014 -> 02:17 PM) They have Nunez and Ryan who they seem pretty content with as the backups. They already have a tight roster, so odds are they would prefer guys on minor league contracts or prospects than an expensive Jeff Keppinger who would force them to get rid of one Ryan or Nunez. The Yankees might have a need for him if someone gets hurt and they have space under the tax line come July, but they really have no need at 3b right now unless it's for a Chase Headley level upgrade.
