QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 08:35 PM) Just got "defriended" by my ultra-liberal cousin on Facebook. Her: Typical angry pro-choice rant about men trying to control women's bodies Me: Standard response about the baby being it's own body and not part of the woman's Her: "You don't have a uterus so your opinion doesn't count" Me: "Didn't you just have a hysterectomy?" Yes hysterectomies are hilarious. I think you put this in te wrong thread. Laughing at women's medical conditions belongs on the other side.

Peavy to Boston, Avisail Garcia + 3 low lv specs to Sox

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 06:57 PM) He's got a lot more power than Conor though. Drawing some walks would also help his cause. Yes he does but that isn't going to mean anything if he can't make enough contact to harness the power. Think Flowers. His numbers through the minors were very similar to Conor, except his were more power driven while Conor makes better contact. He had that one great 2 month stretch last year in the bigs, that's his selling point. IMO, if the Sox got him, he'd be a possible upgrade on Gillaspie with a very high potential to be a complete bust and a wild card chance of becoming a really great player. Maybe you take that chance, but he's not the centerpiece of anything, he's a throwin. -

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 06:50 PM) With what we have at 3B, I wouldn't mind Middlebrooks at all. He's not likely to be all that much better than Gillaspie unless the Sox can find a way to help him control the strikeouts. They don't have a good record fo this. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 05:46 PM) No the payback is economy-based. For example my father retired with half of what he was supposed to because he retired in 08. Having this happen is a terrible thing for the country.

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 05:22 PM) Can we please throw in 5 mil and get this best package... Or the Sox can wait 4 more hours and see if it comes down to $3 mil. -

QUOTE (hi8is @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 05:19 PM) Cool video of peavy talking trade... Trade Watch 2013 I was 100% expecting to be rickrolled. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 05:04 PM) If it was economy-independent. So the 401k is supposed to make economic crashes even worse? That actually sounds...correct.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 04:49 PM) Of course pensions have HUGE advantages, you make more money than you put in. That's supposed to be the point of the 401K also.
-
QUOTE (Hawkfan @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 04:19 PM) Why does that matter if there is a chance he might not get traded? Is that our doing or the potential suitor? It could be both. One or more suitors could have asked for it to play for time, or the White Sox could have realized they had acceptable deals on the table and were holding out for the best one.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 04:21 PM) My point is I am betting that they don't which means the returns are skewed badly. I'd bet they are only including active and liquid pensions. They survey them by size internationally and nationally and break out the 300 largest for additional scrutiny.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jul 21, 2013 -> 03:44 PM) If everyone is making $16/hr in there the profit motive for the dollar menu goes away. So does the dollar menu. Ah, tracked down the right quote. University of Kansas study out on this topic today. (Also pay attention to the fact that a substantial fraction of that compensation is executive pay. If mcdonalds held executive pay constant, or god forbid only paid their CEO $2 million, the price increase required to pay everyone $15 an hour is even smaller).

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 04:02 PM) Out of curiosity, are pension funds that blow up or get bailed out factored into the returns? That would make them an even better deal if you consider there's a chance that does happen. Pension funds have a bunch of advantages over the average 401k. Built in economies of scale combined with professional management combined with a long-term outlook. Some of those can be eliminated by an active, intelligently managed 401k plan, but there's nothing I can do that makes my paperwork as simple as a pension plan.

QUOTE (Wanne @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 03:54 PM) personally I think Kennedy could be a valuable chip to have in your possession. I can see how that would be the case, but I just don't think we have the innings for him. If we have him next year, that puts Johnson down in Charlotte again or forces a trade of one of the left-handers, and neither of those are really ideal. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 03:41 PM) Balta is just outright wrong on his post. What I do think you are missing though, is, as I said... if you start all new hires on a 401k-like plan, how do you pay the people still in the pension system? There is no in-flow to the system, so it all falls apart. By the way, here's some support for yesterday's "Outright wrong" post. Here's Pensions substantially outperforming 401k's even before fees: And continuing through 2011:

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 10:35 AM) That's exactly what I said. Why is it retires cannot pay any premiums toward their healthcare? I think retirees should clearly have to pay a reasonable portion of the wages they're earning from the jobs they are working at to cover their healthcare. After their retired. Pay from their current wages/salary. It makes great sense to me.

QUOTE (Wanne @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 03:48 PM) Kubel is a FA...and Kennedy only makes $4.2M and is arb eligible this winter for two years (and he's not gonna get a very big jump with the year he's having ). It'd be silly not to take him if the Dbacks wanted to throw him in IMO... Honestly, we might almost be better without Kennedy. All he would do is take up innings that should go to Rienzo/Johnson for the rest of this year, and probably next as well. Of course, if Cooper likes him... -
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 03:18 PM) Shouldn't this game just be canceled? You make Rienzo sad.

QUOTE (Paulstar @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 03:02 PM) I certainly do see your point, but to be fair, he's only been their starting CF for a little over a week now (even though he was projected to be the starter before the season and injuries). I guess while its unlikely he will be moved in any such trade, the DBacks do have a surplus of CF's with Parra, Eaton, and Pollack all being able to play there, so I like to think it is still possible they could move Eaton. We could always give them our CF back. -

QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 02:56 PM) Quite frankly, the Sox are in a better position right now than being an 83-85 win team, "competing". Really, I don't buy this at all. Go watch a game and repeat that. -
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 02:53 PM) One isolated stat does not make him a good pitcher. But that one does have a shot at getting him pretty close. You show me a guy with good K/9, I'll ask how many people he walks. He strikes out a lot of people and keeps the walks down and it's almost guaranteed he's a good starter.
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 12:53 PM) Absolutely. I'm thinking perceived future value That's fine, just noting how it's closer than you might think. That's why there's no reason to trade Sale to them unless they're talking Machado.
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 12:51 PM) Then factor in position, potential to improve, Machado's non-pitcherness Position is factored in to WAR.
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 12:16 PM) Sale is not better than Manny Machado. Let's make that clear. Worth noting how close it actually is. Sale has 3.8 WAR on the season, Machado 4.4.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 11:32 AM) So will Rienzo be an epic bust or future HOF 12 hours from now? I guarantee you if he gives up 6 runs and lasts 3 innings there will be many people saying "He's terrible, I never want to see him throw another pitch for the white sox again".
-
QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 09:32 AM) With what Flowers was doing up here and with what Phegley was doing in Charlotte, you had to bring him up to see if he could play, no matter what the results are. At least the Sox will know where they are next year, in need of a C. They don't know that at all. I keep saying this. I said it in the post of mine I replied to. This is 100% normal when you're trying to develop young players. 100% normal. Struggling at the start is what you should expect. Many of history's greatest players struggle at the start. People are so desperate for young talent in this organization, they want to trade off everything for that young talent, and then the moment it gets to the big leagues, it's cast aside and declared a failure because it does what every player should be expected to do.
