QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 6, 2013 -> 02:10 PM) And I still don't see how $1200+ a month isn't sufficient for an old person (or twice that for an old married couple). You don't have kids to pay for, you shouldn't have debt (and even if you pay for a car or pay rent, how much could you possibly need?) Supplemental insurance can be pricey, I get that, but MOST health problems are covered by Medicare, so it's not like you're paying out of pocket costs for every health problem you have. This is a great clause to throw in at the end of a discussion of why financial literacy and financial planning is the most important skill one should have. Because you're dramatically underestimating health care costs...to the point where someone could reasonably question your financial literacy. Let's just look at Medicare itself's numbers: And another number: That $1200 a month would...on average, be 1/2 gone entirely due to medical problems. And since it's an average...that means this happens:

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 6, 2013 -> 02:10 PM) I said from day one, I'd be back right away too, it's too enjoyable to just ignore it. The lockout probably saved me money anyway. Plus, if I try to "teach them a lesson", they will just replace my season ticket money with someone else's, so only I get screwed over in the end. Really, season ticket demand for the NHL is that high? -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 6, 2013 -> 01:29 PM) Atleast they didn't spend a top 10 pick on him like they did those two. Still, they've been absolutely wonderful about picking up high character guys, haven't they? Are we talking about the same guy?

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 6, 2013 -> 12:53 PM) If you were that close to retirement none of your investments should have been in the market at all precisely for that risk of losing a big chunk of it. I know the answer! You can keep it locked up in a safe asset like your house! Those don't decrease in value! Or a bank! Those are always stable!

QUOTE (PorkChopExpress @ Feb 6, 2013 -> 11:50 AM) You say yourself that he is proven major league talent, so what makes you think he's only worth "a flyer" and that no one else seems to want him? If he's worth a flyer to the Sox, then he's worth a flyer to many other teams, and there are plenty of teams that were looking for OF help that didn't get it this off-season. Assuming he can actually get healthy (proven by a physical), there will be a market for him, even though it may be a small market, which means he can probably get a contract that is more than merely a flyer. That being said, his injuries, if I recall correctly and without actually looking it up, were of an ambiguous nature, i.e., leg fatigue or something like that. Those kinds of injuries give me more pause than a broken bone or torn ligament, for example. And a lot of his value was in his legs. Aside from any injury, he is also 30/31 this year, and age takes a toll on the legs, too. But I'll trust the professionals to determine whether he is healthy or not, and if they say he is, I would still pay more than a flyer to get him. You don't lose talent. Sizemore will likely have several teams wanting him at a minimum value if and when he chooses to sign. He's actually being smart, however, and waiting until he's as close to healthy as he can get before doing so.

QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Feb 6, 2013 -> 02:54 AM) Does a 25 year old girl with a good-paying job who gets knocked up by her boyfriend NEED an abortion because she doesn't want her highly conservative family to know about her immoral behavior? What immoral behavior?

QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 5, 2013 -> 09:10 PM) Danny Valencia on list. Maybe it doesn't work all that great. He did get to the bigs and put up an .800 ops as a rookie, hurt us some too iirc.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 5, 2013 -> 08:59 PM) Not necessarily. Just with the odd tendon injury and the quick rise and fall, it's suspicious. Of course with any player around that time period there is a reasonable doubt. Would you say that power 2 seamer he threw could play into the destroyed shoulder?

2012-2013 Sox off season Catch-All thread

Again, don't underestimate how truly bad our 3b position was last year. Over the whole season we got a .600 OPS out of third with crappy defense on top of it. If Keppinger has a weak season for him, he's still likely to put up an OPS > 100 points better, as well as giving better defense. That is a huge potential upgrade. -

QUOTE (chw42 @ Feb 5, 2013 -> 06:22 PM) B- for pitching? The staff deserves at least a B. It's an A- level staff if it's healthy, an A staff if the bullpen develops. The key clause is how you rate the odds of it staying healthy. I could see people putting us much lower than that. Last year they were a C+ staff in my view, they're above average, but they were only barely above average in the AL. -

QUOTE (Cali @ Feb 5, 2013 -> 05:24 PM) So... doesn't think Lindstrom is making the team then? And the Sox are just going with a 5 man bullpen? Given that the bench doesn't show up, presumably they're just highlighting the key players. -

QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 5, 2013 -> 05:03 PM) Again, I agree. I personally think he's underselling the potential improvements already there...but then, it really is hard to fathom how truly bad the White Sox's 3b position was last year...and I'm hoping we know more about Viciedo than what the raw numbers tell, and more about Konerko than the age tells. -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 5, 2013 -> 05:02 PM) Yeah, you make some strong points, that's for sure...my guess is they thought about these things when considering taking this measure, and with the full understanding of how their protocols actually work, and can account for them...but the police have done sillier things before, this is for certain. If I had to guess, I'd imagine this would mean that someone else other than an on-duty police officer could come by and do that sort of work, and I could see how that would be passable. But then, maybe that sort of conviction just never, ever happens, so it makes no sense to send anyone at all and just let the insurance handle it.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 5, 2013 -> 04:55 PM) I think that's exactly what they meant...but let's be honest, in practice, it means if he's not still there, we're mostly likely not going to catch him...and we have no officers to waste right now. So would anyone come and take a fingerprint off a door or do those just get wiped away? It seems like a no brainer to at least see if you can get an easy conviction and take someone off the streets for years by matching a print.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 5, 2013 -> 04:25 PM) http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2013/02/04/chi...some-911-calls/ So the Chicago Police won't come help you if your s*** gets stolen and the robbers are gone. I can't wait until this stupid City gets sued after someone gets killed/raped/assaulted when they report a crime, the police fail to show up, and the robber/criminal sticks around knowing the police won't show up. What a stupid, idiotic decision. And you people want to take away a persons ability to protect themselves? And really, isn't this giving criminals free reign? There's no fear that the cops will show up now. I'm trying to get over the fact that this sounds unworkable on investigation grounds. If a robbery suspect is apprehended, how do you actually link the suspect to the stolen goods and victim if the police never shows up to take a statement, fingerprint the door, or anything else like that? Clearly it can't just be a free pass for robbery, right? How do you take evidence in the case if the police don't arrive at some point?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 5, 2013 -> 03:00 PM) This distributor was one guy. He was already breaking the law. How many different people allegedly delivered stuff to ARod? I read one, the guy who claimed falsely to be a doctor and was the guy making notes. No one saw him in the office, no one else delivered anything to him. I don't think the government is really interested in chasing some random guy pretending to be ARod. ARod is hated, and people want him to be guilty. He may be guilty, I just don't think the proof is out there on this one unless they have something they are keeping secret. It wasn't like the guy was running a legitimate business. The government is more interested in busting the distributor rather than the user. But if the distributor has a client like ARod...that client can be his trump card. The government would at least be willing to switch some of the penalties if there is a user that they can make an example of.
