2012-2013 MLB off season tracker thread

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 06:31 PM) He's hurt way too often, but definitely good when healthy. That means if he stays healthy in the first half he's excellent trade bait, which is exactly what the Mets should be trying to find. -
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 05:07 PM) Montana is a super model compared to Peyton. Cut that meat.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 03:51 PM) And people wonder why I think regulatory spending in this country is a waste of money... It's like the 1994 assault weapons ban. It was stupidly designed, deliberately designed to be useless, designed to not really do anything. Does that mean that all such regulations are destined to fail, or does that mean the problem is we need to stop designing regulations to fail?

QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 03:18 PM) I guess this move is for Triple A I actually thought the AAA rotation seemed pretty full.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 23, 2013 -> 11:28 AM) This is on my list of things to watch, and if I put the link here I'll find it easily. Frontline did a piece last night on why no one from any of the banks/wall street is going to jail despite breaking tons of laws. Apparently there's some very nice hemming and hawwing from an assistant attorney general trying to put his own words together with his current explanations. Wow, I was expecting it and I'm still impressed. The episode basically ends with the guy at the top of the chain, Assistant Attorney General Davis, saying that he consulted with experts and decided he couldn't prosecute banks in part because he needed to ensure the stability of the financial system. I figured they'd be smart enough to stick to the "we just couldn't prove it beyond a reasonable doubt" defense. He straight up admitted that wall street is too important to prosecute even if they break the law. On camera.

Reid going after the Procedural Filibuster
Balta1701 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Filibuster
Leader Reid and minority leader McConnell have reached a "deal" regarding "reform" which effectively changes a few minor things around the edges to make the senate move slightly faster, but does not really remove any of the minority's ability to completely shut down the Senate. Effective result may be that Reid's office is slightly less annoyed on bills that are going to be passed anyway. Nothing else will change. -
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 02:30 PM) Manufacturing is actually coming back to the US, so your symptom actually matches my diagnosis. If that blip at the bottom is "Coming back"...then color me unimpressed. We've successfully gotten back to the # of manufacturing jobs we had in 1946.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 01:09 PM) BJ Upton is 29 in August and had an OBP of .298 last year. What year are you living in, exactly? He's been a $10-20 million player for 6 years in a row in the fangraphs world. He's not the greatest talent...but to cover CF, when you have Heyward and Jupton on the other sides...that sets up a very good OF with an average age in the mid-20's. So yeah, that is a good, young OF. -
QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Jan 23, 2013 -> 10:34 PM) The flow of the game when was just horrendous when Kirk was out there running the point. Great comeback orchestrated by Nate. Gotta like when this happens right when people were complaining about Nate again.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 23, 2013 -> 10:23 PM) Stacey "I LIKE MY MEATBALLS SPICY" Someone let me know when that is on the soundboard.

QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 23, 2013 -> 06:24 PM) Go 'Canes Any other teams you want to cheer on? My word. -
QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 23, 2013 -> 06:53 PM) and it's the only smart thing they've done in years unfortunately it's also massively hypocritical since not months ago they were shouting for a national popular vote, and this will all but destroy the popular vote. lolz It's also moronic for the state itself. Swing states have significant leverage over policy proposals when they actually are swing states. Imagine for a moment if Iowa lost its importance...think about how much less ethanol wed produce.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta will remove the military's restriction on women serving in front-line combat.
-
The Virginia state legislature is officially moving forward on a plan to split their electoral votes by district. Effectively, in the last election, this would have neutered Virginia as a swing state. The President would have received 4 electoral votes from them, despite winning a majority in the state.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 23, 2013 -> 05:10 PM) Right...I think technology has and will continue to allow us better use of the land we have set aside for food production. But at the pace we are multiplying...I just don't know that it matters. Think about what that technology has been doing though. It's effectively allowed our population to expand using fossil resources. Fossil fuels and fossil water. By definition, these can't be replenished. If their production slows down...or one of these water tables dries up, which th ey are doing...

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 23, 2013 -> 03:58 PM) Heck, I like it more than the Thunder, and if we are comparing it to other sports, how about the Blue Jays or Devil Rays? Those all seem silly too, but nobody thinks twice about them anymore. Pelicans are awesome. (They're just the Rays now).

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 23, 2013 -> 03:55 PM) Water comes from another place? News to me. About the only reason 1/2 of the central plains are arable right now is water out of the ground.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 23, 2013 -> 02:52 PM) I've been west. There are huge areas of unhabited/undeveloped land in the dakotas, wyoming, colorado, etc that could support crops. Even if we've literally used up every last inch of arable land, we can shift resources. The vast majority of our farming is for non-food related products or for food product ingredients (corn starch, for example). We could easily change our diet (perhaps a good thing). Where are you getting the water for these things? Particularly with what we're doing to the atmosphere, that's going to be your biggest issue for the foreseeable future in developing that kind of territory.

QUOTE (WilburWilhelm @ Jan 23, 2013 -> 10:19 AM) The theory should have been - batting Adam Dunn third all year long was the difference between winning and losing the central. No it wasn't. Lineup changes don't make nearly that big of a difference.

QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 23, 2013 -> 09:52 AM) Santiago won't pitch in the WBC. I'm glad he decided that Disappointed. Thought that would have been great work/experience for him.

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Jan 22, 2013 -> 05:24 PM) If we get at least 2 FA Olineman I wouldnt be opposed to Eiffert in the first. He looks like a beast. Going to be really, really difficult to get 2 FA o-linemen of any reasonable quality with the Bears cap space unless they let Melton walk, and if they do that then they have a need for a high level DT in the draft. You could get 2 O-linemen if one of them is Spencer-quality.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 22, 2013 -> 03:55 PM) not really He's still trolling on the "one hour after Newtown" report that the shooter liked the Daily Show on his facebook page. Of course, that was before we learned that the shooter was actually the brother of the person with that facebook page...but that hasn't stopped him from his hilarious trolling about that shooting.
