  1. QUOTE (fathom @ May 8, 2012 -> 09:45 PM) Seriously? Look around this thread tonight. I'm about only one not wanting to blame Ventura for this debacle. Yeah, but maybe if you dropped the act these threads wouldnt be so damn unbearable. Everyone else starts trying to one-up yours, then Greg shows up.
  2. QUOTE (Tmar @ May 8, 2012 -> 09:45 PM) Is Phil Konerko playing in this game? No.
  3. QUOTE (fathom @ May 8, 2012 -> 09:42 PM) Will Morel hit more homers this year than Hamilton had tonight? That's the biggest question to come out of tonight's games. If he does will you drop the game thread sky is falling act for a while?
  4. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 8, 2012 -> 09:42 PM) So Pads, Minnie, then probably the Sox? What will you do for us if there are more than 4 teams behind the Sox at the end of the year?
  5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 8, 2012 -> 09:38 PM) Now Santiago's velocity is down 2-3 MPH on the fastball. Seems like he is aiming now and not throwing free and easy. Now comes trouble with Kotchmann and Hannahan. That was the one easy out in the sequence. I don't know what you're watching but I just saw 95-94
  6. QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ May 8, 2012 -> 09:32 PM) Gordon Beckham, Brent Morel, Eduardo Escobar, and Tyler Flowers do not belong on a major league team. When 16% of your team doesn't even belong, you're in for a long season. I bet you can do the same exercise with every team in the central.
  7. QUOTE (Baron @ May 8, 2012 -> 09:30 PM) Josh is a free agent after this year isnt he? Yea
  8. QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 8, 2012 -> 08:26 PM) It's a pity they couldn't have their spectacle in NYC, just like they wanted. Yeah, the idea of a fair, public trial in new York city of an al Qaeda terrorist is just nuts. The media would be insane. Itd be all over everything and just crazy.
  9. QUOTE (Jake @ May 8, 2012 -> 08:01 PM) I wonder what Cleveland fans think about the variety of s*** hitters in their lineup. It's worse for them because guys like Damon and Kotchman aren't exactly prospects anymore, lol Id say a bigger worry for them Right now is that they gave up a fortune for Jiminez last year and that really weakens their chances of snapping off a solid season any time soon if e can't dominate.
  10. Danks with a big K of Damon on the change. We discussed this a few games ago, that was a k of a lefty on the change by Danks.
  11. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ May 8, 2012 -> 07:58 PM) The ball wasn't hit in front of him. It was getting by him no matter what. The key was that he held him to a double, and not a triple. It was a good effort. If he was giving ground I think he could have had that on 1 hop.
  12. Crud. Viciedo has to keep that in front of him.
  13. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 8, 2012 -> 07:05 PM) It depends on the timeframe, but for the most part yes. Superman has kind of evolved in different ways. After the death of Superman storyline, his powers varied for a little while, even to the point where he became a being of pure energy. From what I have read about the upcoming movie, it is mostly based on the new 52 Superman mythos, and Superman is a lot more vulnerable than we will expect. And with General Zod, Ursa and Non as his adversaries, there are 3 other beings with the exact same powers he has. One of the critiques about the "Movie Superman" that I've read at some point is that, like a lot of the movie superheroes, he's too invulnerable. It's not interesting to see a completely powerful god go up against an evil villain, so you have to have something built in the plot line to take away some of those powers (Kryptonite, voluntarily giving up powers, whatever) so that you can put together a storyline with any drama to it.
  14. QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 8, 2012 -> 07:03 PM) more like by each passing start . . . yes, that's right, 1 month, 36 innings, a 3.72 ERA, a 25/5 K/BB ratio, clearly there's no hope or talent there whatsoever. Each passing start.
  15. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 8, 2012 -> 06:10 PM) Well no one is 100% sure how the data works. There are a ton of articles on it, but no article I ever have read has Wisconsin not on the "break even list". Here is Forbes in 2011: http://www.forbes.com/sites/sportsmoney/20...ports-revenues/ Notice how every Big 10 team had at least 5mil in football profit alone, with PSU taking in 50mil. Furthermore: While SEC football may be generating a larger profit, the athletic departments as a whole in the Big Ten are averaging larger profits than SEC schools. The average athletic department in the Big Ten sees a $10,704,551 profit, while the average in the SEC is $8,157,298. That is basically saying both SEC/Big are profitable by conference. Here it is in a spreadsheet: http://www.kristidosh.com/wp-content/uploa...ancial-Data.pdf http://www.kristidosh.com/wp-content/uploa...ancial-Data.pdf As you can see only 2 schools in the Big 10 broke even, the rest made money. Id have to see what figures the first person used, but they seemingly cant be right as Big + SEC is more than 22 schools, and I guarantee almost every Pac-10 team makes money after their new tv deal. There's a big bookkeeping question there though. Somehow I doubt that the $30 million Ohio State spends on "Football expenses" includes "Paying for their stadium in the first place". That money was contributed by the school, but if you count that, and all of the other arenas, the bookeeping winds up fundamentally different.
  16. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 8, 2012 -> 06:59 PM) DC is trying to reboot and compete. If all of your characters are invincibile and infallible, then you arent really setting yourself up in the movie market. There are plenty of Superman stories that have pushed him to the very edge, Brainiac, Doomsday, the Prime storyline. There is a lot they can do with him. Flash has a pretty long and distinguished history as well, I dont know why you dont like him so much, but he has a pretty large following. I agree that Marvel is way better off, but DC could make things interesting if they tried to do it right (Tell me if I'm wrong)....isn't it true that the "Movie" version of Superman, the one I'm used to, is quite a bit more powerful and much closer to invincible than the comic book Superman?
  17. QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 8, 2012 -> 06:56 PM) With the starters in complete dissaray for 2013 you might as well give Beckham, Morel, and Viciedo another chance next year too. Viciedo, fine, I'm more than willing to accept him as a 3 year project. He should be. Beckham and Morel are at the end of their ropes. Beckham in particular, as he's arb-eligible at the end of this year, and paying Beckham $3 million next year to put up a .630 OPS is not palatable any more. Morel...bah, he's had a job handed to him 2 years in a row and this is the 2nd year he's disappointed...he needs to start hitting very soon or be in Charlotte.
  18. QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 8, 2012 -> 06:11 PM) The thing is our GM said he was a top-of-the-rotation prospect the consensus opinion disagreed with that. KW is the one who raised expectations for Molina. And obviously, it is clearly disproven by a single game.
  19. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 8, 2012 -> 06:06 PM) There's zero difference between this tribunal and your every day county court except the amount of time they've existed. There are huge differences in the evidence standards, at the very least, since Hearsay is allowable as evidence. And if these were any other court working on the current globally accepted standards, the people would be released summarily after having been repeatedly tortured.
  20. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 8, 2012 -> 05:47 PM) Nader had an impact in 2000, only getting 2.74% of the vote and being only on 43 ballots + DC. If Nader had not been on Florida ballot or NH ballot, Gore may have won. If a 3rd party candidate can get 1-2% it can have drastic implications, thats not counting a race like Bush v. Clinton where Perot got 18.9% and not 1 electoral vote. I was just wondering if people thought Johnson could grab 1-2%. I'll call this one. The libertarian party will have less of an impact on the ballot than the numerous new restrictions/hurdles to voting passed in the last few years.
  21. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 8, 2012 -> 06:24 PM) Right, but what's going to improve? Our best players are playing well, and we can't expect the bad ones to get better. And we just sent our best starter to the bullpen. If they do, we still have a shot, it's still early, but we absolutely need these guys to get better if we're going to compete this year. That said..if they don't get better, that's why it's a rebuilding year...if Beckham and Morel continue to fail, and Sale stays in the bullpen, then we'll know the places we need to upgrade in the offseason going in to next year. (and nicely, we at least appear to have one solid success in De Aza, who will fill a big need for the next several years cheaply if he just keeps doing what he's doing right now).
  22. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 8, 2012 -> 05:35 PM) http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/gary-jo...-161242264.html If he is on the ballot, who do you think Johnson hurts more, Obama or Romney? I see no reason to expect that the Libertarian party will draw more than it's usual 1% that it does in most presidential contests.
  23. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 8, 2012 -> 05:28 PM) I'm not usually this negative, but I have to point something out: Has anyone else noticed that we're experiencing the elusive "bounce back" seasons from our scapegoats Dunn/Rios/Peavy and are still below .500? I was firmly on the side of "this team could win the Central in the unlikely event that everyone played well," but now that it's unfolding before me, I'm being forced to realize that this just isn't that great of a team. Of course, I planned on Sale being a breakout SP and on Danks being better than Luke Hochevar, but there was no way that EVERYONE was going to work out. If this is a bounceback season for Rios, it's still pretty darn bad so far. And yes, this was entirely predictable. We lost multiple important pieces from last year because we cut $25 million in salary. We let Mark Buehrle go, we traded Quentin and Santos for minor leagues who are unlikely to contribute anything this year. We went into rebuilding mode. That meant we couldn't just win the division if Dunn, Rios, and Peavy got better, that'd just take us back to where we were last year, we also needed a number of other guys to get better for this team to be better. We needed nothing to go wrong, and Chris Sale has already gone wrong.
