  1. In case people are still interested in this program...
  2. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 3, 2012 -> 10:06 AM) this isnt ACL balta. THis is achilles Can I claim the "It's morning" excuse? Anyway, point to you, 30 demerits to me.
  3. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 3, 2012 -> 10:01 AM) I dont even think it is in doubt. He gawn Well, a "6-9 month recovery time" for an ACL tear was given as the number for another recent ACL tear, and that puts it right in the middle of the NFL season if it's at the short end...then depends on if you want to keep the guy having a roster spot for 8-12 games when he can't play.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 3, 2012 -> 09:59 AM) I love the Republicans did it defense. I love the "haha we suck but now so do you" attack!
  5. Oh, and one I forgot to mention yesterday...another thing playing into these NFL player quick deaths/suicides is probably PED use (again, not alleging this specific case).

  7. QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 2, 2012 -> 07:03 PM) And they got that information from *GASP*... KSM. Something Obama (dare I say it) wouldn't have done. Next. Still untrue that the only source was KSM, still untrue that they obtained the name during torture, still untrue that they only could have obtained the name during torture, still true that I get sick every time an American endorses this crap that we'd send other people to death if they did to us.
  8. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ May 2, 2012 -> 11:11 PM) To be "under oath" means so little that I'm not sure why they even bother mentioning it. It carries about as much weight as pinky swearing does. Because you can charge a person with perjury if they lie under oath?
  9. Former NBA number 1 pick Joe Smith in to pitch.
  10. Apparently we now put defense on the board.
  11. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ May 2, 2012 -> 09:14 PM) He is keeping his good friend from going to jail over something dumb and a giant waste of money.... I think anyone that wouldn't fudge the truth to help a friend out in a case like this is the true scumbag. I can't imagine the government would have brought this "giant waste of money" case I'd try had Pettitr telling them what he just said in court. But hey, he's wasting the taxpayers money so it's ok right?
  12. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 2, 2012 -> 06:20 PM) Jenks, I agree that football is inherently violent. I just believe that if the NFL purposefully lied to players about the risks they may be entitled to some sort of compensation. My main statement was that the NFL should get their act together and start being proactive, because ex-NFL players killing themselves isnt good regardless of the cause. One other thig to recognize is that every time one of these happens...it makes the NfL look bad even if they are completely forward about the risks. So, there's a solid benefit to the league for being proactive in these cases, but it would require them admitting it is a particular issue, which they can't do.
  13. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 2, 2012 -> 06:38 PM) I'm an engineer. Right now we are discussing the increased risk of depression, not just suicide. I don't believe depression and suicide are that simple, either, with something pushing someone over the edge. There is a large physiological component. No one here is going to sit here and say that "Brain injuries are the only cause of depression and suicide", but the original statement was the opposite, that these guys having their brains turned to mush has no impact.

  15. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 2, 2012 -> 06:00 PM) I just am not super impressed with Bin Laden. I dont think he was some sort of mastermind who was irreplaceable. If anything (imo) he was a complete failure. He had tons of money, tons of support and at the end of the day his greatest achievement was the twin towers? Im pretty sure I could get that type of death toll with considerably less funding. All it really took was convincing a handful of people to die for their cause and taking advantage of system where you were instructed to not confront a terrorist and to placate them. I believe the actual attacks themselves, including lodging, training, passports, plane flights, etc., cost less than a million dollars, although I'm not going through the full 911 commission report for the exact number and Google isn't easily supplying it.
  16. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 2, 2012 -> 05:51 PM) Which was smart because pouring resources into capturing 1 individual is a poor use of resources. (haha used pour and poor in the same sentence) Bin Laden was good for national pride, but his death likely accomplished nothing in the grand scheme of things. This would have been true if he was totally disconnected from the organization. We don't know everything, but the fact that they found a treasure trove of intel suggests that he was actively running the organization and that there were substantial tactical benefits to specifically getting him beyond just him being a symbol.
  17. QUOTE (flippedoutpunk @ May 2, 2012 -> 05:22 PM) explain then please, because to the average meatball if we look at that study were getting the idea that the other 80 percent of the 595 are perfectly fine and dandy. A reasonable margin of error on a survey of 600 respondents is about 4 percentage points. If you survey 600 people, and the depression rate in the full population is 5%, then 95% of the surveys you take should give results between 1 and 9%, and 99% should give results between 0% and ~13%. Having it come out at a rate of 20% from a sample just by random chance when the real number is 5% would happen about once in 1.7 million surveys if the 2 things you were looking at were truly uncorrelated. For another way of stating it...the odds of having a group of 120 come out of a group of 600 when the real value should be 40 is only slightly better than the odds of hitting a pick 6 lottery.
  18. Here's a study from about a decade ago, covering 100,000+ patients, who similarly finds an increase in the suicide risk of >2 associated with concussions, with the highest risk increase associated with the most severe concussions, and strongly suggests that societal factors can also influence that rate (which would imply a role for some sort of beneficial, league-wide response).
  19. QUOTE (flippedoutpunk @ May 2, 2012 -> 05:02 PM) yes 20.2 percent is a large increase, but i just don't think its safe to make definitive statements that insinuate that every single person with 3 or more concussions will have triple the rate of depression, when the study said 20.2 percent of 595 people that were interviewed had triple the depression rate. You're right in one sense...you need one more qualifier. Both of the groups being compared there play football. That is a subset, and probably a certain type of injury (and presumably, some fraction of those people had substantially more than 3 concussions as well). If you want to take it farther, you need to look at other concussion incidence studies in different groups. Here's one in veterans. Similar story, somewhat different percentages. Here's another, no idea if the link is proprietary. It also cites about a dozen other articles that have found similar relationships between post-concussion symptoms and expression of depression.
  20. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 2, 2012 -> 05:00 PM) uh - my point is that there could be many factors for depression, and the bandwagon to jump on ANY FOOTBALL PLAYER THAT KILLS HIMSELF HAS CTE AND DID SO BECAUSE OF IT is stupid, and I certainly look forward to Seau's autopsy findings. Why? By your own standard, finding significant brain damage would be unimportant.
