QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 03:02 PM) If you think about it, his slow, offspeed pitches could have been negatively impacted by the tough pitching conditions in Arizona. I wish he was the long reliever for the big league club. It's certainly plausible that he'll get that job sooner rather than later. Of course, it's also fairly likely we'll need a spot starter if someone tires out or hits the Dl here in a few weeks too, and compared to Stewart, Axelrod will be stretched out.
  2. QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 03:01 PM) Seriously is there anybody who DOESN'T think he should go down for a month or so? Because I haven't heard it. Apparently, Robin Ventura. I don't know what's going on with the kid's mind right now, but the job of turning him around is on the coaching staff. If they think sending him down is the wrong move...well, it's their jobs on the line, not ours.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 12:51 PM) He pitched really well last season too. I've never quite understood why he is never talked about. I'm sure the scouting reports must not be glowing on him, but he does seem to put up really solid numbers, and that's got to count for something. Right now he has a 20:3 K/BB in 17 IP. He had a legit shot to earn the bullpen role in spring training and I was actually surprised he didn't step up and grab it.
  4. QUOTE (Lillian @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 01:27 PM) I understand and don't disagree with that approach. However, shouldn't they then be trying to trade the veteran players, who could net them more prospects? If June/July rolls around and this team is 10 games back of the Tigers, which is still entirely plausible, then the answer is yes. You can wait until June. Until then, you play the guys you have and do what you can to extract value from them. If you could get a Dunn or Rios hot streak, then that might be enough to get someone desperate for an OF (hi Boston) to gamble on the last 2 years of a contract if they don't have to take on anything else. If June/July rolls around and we're 3-4 games back of the Tigers...then a whole lot of things have gone right.
  5. QUOTE (Wanne @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 02:50 PM) Personally if I was Gordo I'd watch film...and more film of himself in his last year of college and first year up. You know the guy I'd like to see him emulate...and I always thought he'd be the right handed hitting version of him was Chase Utley. Nice short compact stroke like Gordo used to have. Gordo is still young and has a chance to be a good one if he ever irons out that long swing. Another on the list of things I guarantee Gordon Beckham has done.
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 12:09 PM) Soxbadger you are what is wrong with America. There's no way this doesn't cross some line.
  7. 7 new DKR photos.
  8. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 11:22 AM) True, but again it's going to depend on the case. If 90% of the evidence points one way, and the test points the other way and it's going to be enough to get a guilty verdict, i'd be shocked if they would flat out deny a retest. Remember though, the forensic/DNA evidence is by far the most powerful evidence in any case. Unless you absolutely cannot square the forensic evidence with an overwhelming amount of evidence, like a dozen witnesses and receipts proving the person on trial was 1000 miles away at the time, I'd believe the forensic/lab evidence over anything else.
  9. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 11:18 AM) Well that's true. But again if that's the key piece of evidence I don't see how the public defenders office wouldn't allow that cost. I know when I've gotten testing done (blood/food/clothing) it's been hundreds of dollars, not thousands, and i'm sure the PD's office gets discounts if they do volume work. If anything i'm sure it's more on the PD's office simply accepting the test results (as they probably should since they should be trusted) and not believing their client. Which isn't something to be upset with them about considering 90% of their clients lie straight to their faces about everything. No way a PD's office is going to have enough of a supply of taxpayer funds to re-do every forensics test just to make sure that the lab is trustworthy. The problem is that a 2% failure rate from a lab puts thousands of people in jail, but double-checking would require double-checking a large number of the 98% of tests that worked.
  10. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 10:48 AM) As I listened to this story on the radio this morning I was wondering why the defense wouldn't have gotten their own expert to review/test whatever it is the FBI was testing. Maybe it's a situation where there isn't enough blood/hair/ballistics whatever anymore to do that, but why on earth would you ever just accept as truth what those test say, especially if they're bad for your client? I think the answer is money. There aren't many labs that do those sorts of tests, and most of the ones that can are funded by the government and therefore prosecution.
  11. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 10:35 AM) Come on. This team plays to the level of competition from time to time. They've done it for the last couple of seasons. Add to that that the Bulls get a teams' best effort on a nightly basis and you're going to have a couple disappointing losses. This happened earlier this year with Golden State, and it happened again last night. It happens. Really...no, this Chicago Bulls team does not play to the level of the competition. They have had the killer instinct for 2 years. That has been one thing Thibs has been great at. But they can't do that if they don't have Rose and Deng at 100% or at least close to it, and Derrick Rose right now is a piece of glass. The Pacers are going to kill him if these 2 teams meet again.
  12. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 10:13 AM) Also the Drew Peterson trial still hasn't started http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-574...-peterson-case/ Oh, that case, I crossed up with the "Laci Peterson" or whatever her name was case from last decade.
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 10:10 AM) There was a rumor that Lincecum was no longer throwing a pitch....maybe his slider? and speculation that he was experiencing elbow pain. And his velocity was way down in ST and so far in the early season. Pitch F/X bears out that his velocity so far is down about 2 mph from last year, but it also thinks that he's throwing his slider a ton more in the last 2 years than he has any year beforehand. He went from using his fastball 60% of the time in his good years to 35-40% of the time the last few years, and has gone from 5% of his pitches being classified as sliders to 25% of them being called sliders. His slider velocity is very close to his changeup velocity, so maybe it's mixing up those 2 pitches some, but his fastball is getting used much, much less than he used to.
  14. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 10:00 AM) You're absolutely right, it should only matter to a certain level, but that's not always the case. If the judges/juries appointed to hear the case do their jobs properly, it wouldn't/shouldn't matter. Since you want to invoke Casey Anthony and OJ and how they got fair trails, allow me to invoke Drew Peterson...where the courts are allowing 'hearsay' evidence against him. I think that's wrong on so many levels it's not even funny, and in no way can it be considered "fair". My personal opinion on Peterson is a different matter entirely...he's a creep to the Nth degree...but he's also being railroaded right now and nobody cares because it's him. I think we want to believe the system is fair/working properly, but I think we know that in many cases it's really not. Ive seen it in action when sitting on a jury myself, and not a single person on the jury cared one way or the other...all they wanted to go was go home. That experience soured me on our awesome "peer system". I think the trial of your peers monicker sounds great...but it only works if the people involved care. Sadly, I'd say most do not. And I'd argue the only reason they pretend to care on huge trials like this one is they see $ book deals when all is said and done. If you can suggest a better legal system than the one we currently have, I'd be happy to listen. I feel like my response is going to be that this is the worst system we could have...except for all the others. If the case you cited didn't get a fair trial, then why didn't it fall apart on appeal? He certainly has that right.
  15. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 09:44 AM) So, you're big plan is to develop players like Adam Dunn, Alex Rios, Paul Konerko, AJ Pierzynski, Alexei Ramirez, Alejandro De Aza? Maybe I can see this with Morel and Viciedo, but the rest of these guys are 30 or damn near it (save Gordon Brokhen). We should develop the pitchers, they are our bread and butter. I like what I'm seeing there in that regard, save I want Reed closing immediately. I haven't, however, given up on this season, but the Sox are not going to go far at the current rate they are striking out. Yes. If Dunn and Rios fall flat, then the team won't be going anywhere. Calling up Conor Jackson and Dallas McPherson to replace them and carry the team to the playoffs is laughable. Playing Brent Lillibridge 600 at bats and expecting him to carry you to the playoffs is similarly silly. Put Dunn and Rios out there until their contracts are up or they retire. Put De Aza, Morel, and Viciedo out there and try to make them into big leaguers. They're assets, they have talent, De Aza wouldn't be on your list if not for a ocuple mental errors. You turn 2 of the 3 into regular big leaguers, you've had a major accomplishment. Play Konerko and Pierzynski because you kinda have to...and if the team falls apart while you're playing the other guys, then finally throw in the towel and shoot to move them in June/July.
  16. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 09:34 AM) It's ok to admit that without the media there probably wouldn't be a trial. It's also ok to admit that a lot of the media has also corrupted the process of innocent until proven guilty along the way of bringing attention to this. "Corrupted the process" should only matter to a certain level though. Even if there is enormous coverage, the guy can and should still get a fair trial. If somehow the media has prevented that from happening then you can be genuinely outraged, but hell, we somehow tried OJ fairly, this state somehow tried Casey Anthony fairly. Change the venue, change the judge because of an indirect connection to CNN's broadcast team, and then it's up to the state to prove their case beyond a reasonable doub.t The process is only corrupt if the person can't get a fair trial, and I don't believe that.
  17. QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 09:28 AM) They probably wouldn't play every day. Lillibridge and Escobar would likely get more time. I'm just saying Morel and Beckham are bringing nothing to the offense, and it's not a waste to bring up McPherson or Jackson right now if the net result is a better offense. Playing Eduardo Escobar every day is not "Playing to win". I'm not quite sure what playing Lillibridge every day is, either.
  18. QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 09:19 AM) I don't buy that here on April 17th. The Sox have a good pitching staff, and there's no reason for this team not to play to win. Sending Morel and/or Beckham wouldn't be a punishment. It's to help them get back some confidence at the plate without the big league pressure weighing on them every at bat. If a McPherson or Conor Jackson, or anyone else can help even a little over the next 6-8 weeks, then they should make some moves very soon. The schedule is very gettable the first half. There's no reason why the Sox can't be 50-35 at the break if they get some offense from anywhere. Calling up "Dallas McPherson and Conor Jackson and giving them regular playing time" is not "Playing to win" by any reasonable definition.
  19. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 09:16 AM) Yeah, I get your point, kinda similar to what is going down on the North side of town as well. It's just that the less revenue that comes in only hinders the rebuilding process, but what can you do? The amazing thing about the modern MLB is...the "Less revenue" from the gate shouldn't really matter from here on out. TV revenues and revenue sharing dollars are absolutely exploding. The gate is becoming a smaller and smaller slice of most team's revenues.

Anyone here know anything about/have to recently deal with colleges in the state of Mississippi? One of their schools has a position open I'd qualify for, but I'm really hesitant about the fact that Mississippi passed the "concealed weapons allowed on college campuses" law last year.
  21. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 08:54 AM) Does Jeff Manto have Twitter? Someone RT that in his direction, it can't hurt. Gordon Beckham has heard so many comments on his hitting technique by this point that you may as well tweet that to him in chinese.
  22. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 08:53 AM) The people who are signing Dunn & Rios's checks care about that. No, they shouldn't be caring about that. Really. The only way this team is going to put butts in the seats is to get back to winning ballgames. If that means playing kids and dealing with struggles, or playing failing players because they're highly paid, so be it. Get everything out of the assets you have. If they snap together and pull off something fine...if not, then you've done a key step in rebuilding.
  23. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 08:11 AM) http://sports.yahoo.com/news/bobby-valenti...DZJxe78mUw5nYcB Article on Valentine's mess in BOS already....interesting, Cherington apparently wanted Dale Sveum and John Henry/ownership group wanted disciplinarian type in Valentine. On this one, I'm leaning towards the ownership. You're getting right now the end result of what happens when you have a clubhouse out of control and then you try to bring it back under control
  24. QUOTE (Lillian @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 12:44 AM) There is no reason to stubbornly stick to Rios, Beckham, Morel, and against LHP, Dunn. Developing for the future, like we should be doing.
