NBA Offseason Thread
QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 24, 2011 -> 10:22 AM) Ha, I watched that yesterday too. It makes sense. You can probablly be a lot more aggressive when you have KG guarding the rim behind you. But, no he didn't look that great last year for the thunder albeit he was injured. I don't know what Webber said, but the Thunder are so much of a faster team than the Celtics, Perkins doesn't fit well there. Perkins is a big guy who can defend in the 1/2 court. He might be a great fit for Dallas right now, but all he's going do to for OKC is slow them down or force them to play 4 on 5 on offense more often.

2012 Cubs thread
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Dec 24, 2011 -> 03:48 AM) Kevin Goldstein says he has NO power though. Maybe more of a Darin Erstad. EDIT: After looking up Erstad's number, holy steroid 2000 season! Erstad hit .355/.409/.541/.950 with 25 HR, 100 RBI, 28 SB, put up an 8.8 WAR and an incredible defensive season. After A-Rod and Helton, Erstad was arguably the 3rd best player in baseball in 2000. Erstad was a former number one pick though. Guy always had a ton of talent.

k0na breaks story on Danks 5 years/$65mil ext...Heyman confirms
QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Dec 24, 2011 -> 12:33 AM) Good point. I think Danks and Floyd both suffer from not being able to get outs without their best stuff, and attacking the inner half of the plate more would do wonders on those days IMO. Floyd is actually a different beast...he never strikes me as "Struggling to put guys away" like Danks does. When Floyd is struggling, guys hit home runs off of him. When Danks is struggling, guys hit 19 foul balls in a row off of him before singling.

Republican 2012 Nomination Thread
The only 2 candidates to qualify for the GOP Primary ballot in the state of Virginia are Ron Paul and Mittens. None of the others submitted the required number of signatures. If this nomination fight lasts a while, that will be, um, bad, for anyone other than those 2.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Dec 23, 2011 -> 10:57 PM) Detroit might not be so mediocre - I'd even expect them to be BETTER than last year. It's reall hard for me to see Verlander repeating that run. Yes es always been good, but his heart grew three sizes last year.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 23, 2011 -> 04:55 PM) I can give it a try if you would like. I haven't tried with color pdfs, but it works fine with internet sites. If you could that's be great. If you need a file to test, pm me your email. I have hundreds. Might be getting one for Xmas, but it's worthless to me if I can't use it to read journal papers, and I can't try it out easily on my own.

k0na breaks story on Danks 5 years/$65mil ext...Heyman confirms
QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 23, 2011 -> 05:42 PM) The interesting thing about those stats when comparing MB and Danks is that MB had 11 fewer starts but pitched 60 more innings. This is where Danks has his weakness. Learning that strikeouts don't necessarily mean everything if you can get out of an inning earlier and pitch deeper into games. It's not going for the strikeout that hurts John, it's that he has no real way to get consistent outs other than the change. You can see him trying to get guys to hit the ball on days he doesn't have the change, but they foul off 5 fastballs.

Does anyone know how good of a job a Nook does at reading pdf files? (for example, if one loaded a scientific paper with images in color, would it be able to display the paper and interpret the images into grayscale if you didn't have the color version?)

2012 Cuban signees thread Cespedes/Soler/Concepcion
QUOTE (gatnom @ Dec 23, 2011 -> 03:45 PM) They could try for other international signings as well. It hasn't quite kicked in yet, but starting in July of 2012 there will be a substantial luxury tax applied to international signings, which many believe will wind up leading to the incorporation of international signings into the draft pretty quickly. Clause in the new CBA.

Indiana Secretary of State Ruled Ineligible
This problem would clearly be solved by stronger voter ID laws.

QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Dec 23, 2011 -> 02:10 PM) Maybe it is just the mid-season blues, but I'm starting to really want this guy...... Even if he doesn't start at the big league level for whatever reason, signing him clearly makes our organization stronger, given the dearth of talent we have on its way up.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 23, 2011 -> 02:08 PM) And no wonder you think voter fraud laws are accurate, while Wall Street regulation and compliance running into the hundreds billions isn't In one case, every few years people get charged with actually doing it, and the evidence that something is really wrong that the law can't deal with is virtually nil. The only justification for changing the law that is ever offered is either intuitive or cases where the law actually does the job. In the other case, the evidence of rampant fraud that does not produce a legal response is extreme. For examples, there is entire mortgage market (Fraudulent documents, fraudulent income statements, fraudulent foreclosure documents), or the recent SEC settlement with Citigroup which was thrown out by a judge because the settlement included the 5th or 6th major pledge by Citi to stop breaking the law in the last decade (violations of the previous ones having produced no response), and I could go on but I need to finish an abstract. The only evidence for keeping the law as is ever offered is that making the industry follow the law might make other things worse. Clearly, in the first case, regulation is not strict enough, and in the 2nd regulation is too strict. And conveniently...that conclusion winds up hurting the poor in both cases.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 23, 2011 -> 01:43 PM) And I have found the big government types are upset to have a big government around when it endangers their own frauds. No wonder you think there's too many groups with regulatory authority over Wall Street.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 23, 2011 -> 01:35 PM) Now that is irony at its finest. I've found the fact that small government types are thrilled to have big government around if the end result is fewer black people voting to be equally ironic, thank you very much.
-
The Republican Thread
And whaddya know? The current laws were adequate to deal with the matter. And whaddya know? More stringent voter ID laws/fewer poor and black people voting would have done nothing to stop that. And whaddya know? Getting rid of absentee ballots, which are the only real opening for fraud but also would cut down votes by white people, would deal with that if it really were an issue.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 23, 2011 -> 09:55 AM) But more seriously there are fixes in practice in other countries that have significantly lower inequalities and significantly higher social/economic mobility: Stronger social safety nets paid for with higher taxes. Much more stringent regulations on the financial industry, including on compensation. Better trade policies/better industrial policies Repairing of publicly held infrastructure. Re-strengthening of worker rights.
