  1. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 10:20 AM) how many pages was the debt compromise?74 I think. With 1 day to read/process it.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 10:18 AM) The public reaction has supported exactly that. The public reaction also wanted the employees of AIG burned at the stake.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 10:07 AM) Which are also exactly what the public wants. They want high wages and cheap goods. But they also want jobs. The policy reaction to that has been to make sure that there are fewer jobs, but a very well paid financial system.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 10:03 AM) Because it is cheaper to make things overseas than in the US? Because of government policy choices.
  5. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 10:01 AM) Pretty sure conservatives voted in an entire new wave of candidates that have no loyalties, either to government or big business. And they've been the friendliest votes for big business and lobbyists that there are.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 10:01 AM) Not if he is in the bottom 40% of so of taxpayers. Now this is just stupid. Literally stupid. Not only are you repeatling a moronic falsehood, but in this case it's even dumber...since Medicare, Social Security, and state taxes are the taxes that the poor pay...and those are the taxes that explicity pay for taking care of unwanted pregnancies.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 09:57 AM) No, it is exactly what they want. They dollar vote for it every single day. They have had the chance to buy American for generations, and haven't done it. If you want higher wages, you have to pay for it. People aren't willing to do it. They would rather buy cheap and cost jobs. Again, why are you concluding that cheap = made overseas? This is only true if government policy makes it true.
  8. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 09:59 AM) I suppose, if you ignore the fact that now middle america gets to pay for that "free" mandate for everyone. You already are paying for it.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 09:59 AM) If he leaves and causes Buehrle to leave, he damned well will. Hell, if there's a losing team on the field...then AJ Pierzynski and Mark Buehrle staying will not make up the $15 million+ it takes to pay them.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 09:34 AM) Plenty of players ask to be traded. And there's zero reason for the team to publicize it.
  11. QUOTE (Felix @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 09:27 AM) His potential playoff eligibility might. We have the Twins this week after the Yankees. I have a feeling we won't be talking about that much any more.
  12. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 09:42 AM) I don't know. This team is so unlikeable now. Dumping one of your few popular players might not be a good idea when you're struggling to get fans to show up. AJ Pierzynski will not account for an additional $6 million in revenue in 2012 unless there's a winning team on the field.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 09:53 AM) The public is getting the trade policy that it wants, including it not being their own damned faults. No, the public is getting the trade policy that people have convinced it to want. Very few people in the public think that shipping manufacturing jobs overseas is a good thing, but that is what our trade policy's explicit goal has been.
  14. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 09:53 AM) And we the people allowed it. Where were we given a choice in the question?
  15. Arguing whether or not he's an "expert" is not something I care about. Most of the common TV "experts" these days have a track record of being wrong almost constantly. Argue about his track record. Has he been mostly correct or incorrect in predicting how the economy has gone? He was one of the early ones (along with me) calling the housing bubble a bubble. He wrote extensively on how the removal of regulation was allowing for larger and larger crashes well before the 2001 and 2008 crashes/panics happened. He missed things, as far as I can tell, like the slicing and dicing of mortgages and the outright legalize fraud within the banking/investment sector, but I'm not sure anyone called that before it imploded since the government was happy to turn a blind eye. He was arguing that the deficit was a bad thing in 2005-2006 because it would drive inflationary pressures and is arguing that deficits should be larger now...but he was right, in 2005-2007 the fed started tightening monetary policy because inflation numbers were ticking up.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 09:46 AM) No it is because the public wants cheap Chinese goods. No, it's because the public wants cheap goods relative to their income level. They wouldn't care where they came from, and if their income level was higher (i.e. because of a stronger export market) then a greater variety of goods would qualify as cheap. There's also the added bonus of having the taxpayer pick up the health care costs of most of walmart's employees in keeping those goods "Cheap".
  17. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 01:16 AM) More? I don't think there is one. But I don't like that since we traded a fringe prospect for a crappy reliever we idolize the damn prospect. He should have been a throw in for an attempt or A-Gon, or Doc, or whoever else wanted but didn't have bullets for. Same for Hudson. Hudson was/is a fringe prospect?
  18. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 08:17 AM) http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_18591786...ce=mng_fulltext Makes you wonder how much we'll end up losing (if anything) not trading Quentin or Danks over the deadline? Thornton or Floyd, it doesn't matter as much...or Alexei Ramirez, for that matter. Alexei, Thornton, Floyd all should be worth about as much, if not more, next season as they would be now. If nothing else, teams might have hesitated to trade for Alexei or Thornton because they haven't been all there with their performances this season. The same can be said about D1. Quentin though, unless he goes on one of his 1.200 OPS tears for the last 2 months of the season, yeah, he's going to be worth less in Dec than he would have been now.
  19. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Aug 1, 2011 -> 11:14 PM) So the Senate was unable to restore FAA authorization before August recess, because Tom Coburn decided that there has to be a bright line on EAS subsidies that was different than the bright line that the bipartisan plan provided - despite the fact that the bright line would have chopped 4 times the EAS subsidy that was originally proposed. Orrin Hatch than blocked a clean authorization bill because it didn't discuss union rules. In the meantime, 4,000 FAA workers are unemployed until at least September. Over 2.5 billion dollars of infrastructure improvement programs at the nation's airports are halted, and to make matters worse, there are a number of safety inspectors who have to still work, but their pay is withheld until the authorization is granted again. Also, the federal government can no longer collect excise taxes on flights - costing the federal government approximately a quarter billion in revenue a week. What does this mean? It means, that by September, certain deficit hawk Senators who decided to block the reauthorization of an air safety organization will end up adding 1.2 billion dollars to the deficit. And those $1.2 bil are being taken up by the airlines, who just adjusted their prices to compensate for the tax decrease.
  20. Walmart's Chinese made goods are only able to remain cheap because of public policy decisions. Lack of regulation on imported goods, clearly failing to deal with the Chinese currency manipulation, assist from the lack of U.S. worker rights.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 08:33 AM) And now the Democrats have a reason to blame the Republicans for this, instead of their own screw ups. Then the Republicans shouldn't have forced this bigger screwup. And they shouldn't force the next round of budget cuts in September.
  22. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 05:08 AM) Should at least get called up on August 31st, in the event we are within 5 games of the division. The 10 at bats he'll get will make a huge difference.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 09:10 AM) Because they are still here. Josh Fields asked for a trade/release in 2009 and it took until November for it to happen.
  24. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 07:48 AM) You could probably add AJ to the trade list except we don't have any legit prospects behind him to take his place. Have to get them back through trades of the players you already mentioned. If someone would claim AJ on waivers, I'd let him go.
  25. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 08:02 AM) What happened to benching Rios? Was that for only 2 games. Everyone knows that it's impossible for left handed batters to hit left handed pitchers. Face 3 lefties in a row, the right handed batter must play even if he doesn't deserve it. The exception to this of course is Adam Dunn, who is mashing left handers to a degree previously unseen in the history of baseball. So he plays always.
