QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 02:26 PM) And even longer in government health care. I could just fall back on the "Except for everywhere else" point, but why bother. I just can't figure out how you expect me to be scared about having the government denying care to people based on actual research done to see what types of care is effective, when care is denied right now based on whether or not you can afford it and paid for regardless of whether its effective.

2011 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 12:23 PM) I thought it was nuts to even suggest. But honestly, if you're the Mariners, do you at least consider trading Felix? That organization is in complete shambles right now. Their lineup rivals any from the dead ball era. Not much of a system to speak of. Ackley/Pineda appear to be legitimate building blocks. But they're so far away right now that Felix could possibly mean more to you in a trade than he does pitching for you every fifth day with no realistic chance of competing. What team wouldn't empty out their farm for him? I mean, you'd consider it the same way that the Rockies would consider trading Ubaldo. There's no realistic reason to trade him, but if some team comes and offers you what the Cowboys got for Herschel Walker (I really have no comparable from a baseball perspective) then you let him go.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 02:19 PM) I love that you took it that way. I'm simply pointing out what the future of medicine looks like. Desperately finding reasons not to treat expensive patients? I got news for you, that's the present and past 30+ years of medicine in this country.

QUOTE (Baron @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 02:22 PM) Lol they did Ozzie has clearly shown since the AS break that his 3b position is now a platoon. Teahen has responded by going 5/25 with a .440 OPS.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 02:05 PM) It ought to piss you off as another example of what government run health care would look like. And FYI, this is also the historical norm for the VA system as well. "Agent Orange, what's that?" Of course, if we simply covered "Cancer treatments" for everyone, then it wouldn't really matter what the cause was, now would it? I love that attack by the way. On one hand, government provided health care is way too expensive. On the other hand, how dare the government be stingy about allowing people into this program!

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 02:02 PM) Its also a great way for the government to not have to pay claims... Which should make you happy right? Anyway, didn't we finally pass the 9/11 first responder health care bill last year? Wouldn't that cover it in those cases?

"Insufficient evidence" is not the same as saying it's not true. Sufficient evidence for a government to make policy can and should be a very high standard.

QUOTE (The Baconator @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 01:47 PM) Does anyone know of an app for the Droid that I can listen to the game? I have an mlb.tv account but I don't want to spend the additional $10 to be able to use that on my phone (I don't really need the video, just the radio feed as I want it for when I'm driving). Any input? As far as I know, the only way to get access to games over a phone is the full MLB At Bat version with audio, the $10 like you said.

Can't wait to see it. Still hoping it's of him standing at the plate staring at the pitcher with the bat just above his shoulder. That's how I'll always think of him. You can just imagine the panic going through that pitcher's mind.

Financial News
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 11:18 AM) It is, and we the people lose. But at the same time, the Democrats had no problem granting small debt ceiling raises throughout their reign in the Gee-Dub era. Now it's a problem and we need to extend it for years so we don't have to redo this process a few months down the road. It's typical of both parties...and I'm sick of it. The Democrats didn't attach any additional policy demands to those debt ceiling increases.

Ken Williams considers youth movement
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 11:07 AM) The strikeout rate is WAY higher for those kind of guys though. The Sox would be set back 10 years plus if they guys they got didn't produce quickly. Really, the more I think about it, the more I'm uncertain about the bust rate on AAA guys. How many top level guys have we seen be the key parts of trades over the past few years but then wind up not producing once they reach the show? LaPorta comes immediately to mind. Delmon Young took years before he wound up putting up an .800 OPS. Justin Smoak is hitting .227 with a .720 OPS. Kyle Drabek put up a 1.79 WHIP.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 10:59 AM) Maybe not rebounding back to his old self, but I can't see any way he is this bad again. I think we could have written that line after his disastrous 2 month stint with this team in 2009. Then he rebounded back to his old self. Then he was worse.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 10:47 AM) There's absolutely no reason for them other than to repeat this whole charade again in a few months. Harry Reid's current offer/plan which the President has endorsed includes no revenue/tax increases, larger cuts than the last plan that Boehner has on the table, but also includes enough of an increase to push past the 2012 election. Boehner's current offer is for smaller cuts but a small enough increase to make sure this fight gets refought in 2012. They're willing to accept higher spending in order to refight this fight next year.

Are you in or out?
QUOTE (heirdog @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 10:35 AM) Out. This team could scrape and claw and win the division and then get bounced in the first round...no thanks. World Series Championship or bust...not a battle for the weak AL Central title This team has beaten up on teams better than .500.

Ken Williams considers youth movement
QUOTE (heirdog @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 10:42 AM) But wouldn't all the major talent the Sox give up (konerko, buehrle, quentin, etc) net at least some higher ceiling players than Lilli or DeAza...I would want to see those types (I.e. Rasmus) or even Jordan Danks, Mitchell etc. Lilli is a nice utility player and DeAza a decent 4th OF. Not necessarily...if you do the sale right, you don't necessarily target MLB-ready players, because MLB-ready-ness has a higher price than total talent. Teams get far bigger steals targeting low level players who won't arrive for a few years, or guys who are otherwise undervalued. That's how the Twins got so much for Pierzynski; Liriano was an injury risk in the low minors and no one thought Nathan was a closer. That's how the Indians got Carlos Santana for Casey Blake, Asdrubal Cabrera for Eduardo Perez, etc.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 10:21 AM) The crowd will lynch Peavy if he gives up runs like he has to the Royals his last two times out. Another bad outing and I think he is on the DL until September. anyone see what Kyle Davies did to Boston last night. Last outing was not a bad outing for Peavy. He threw 5 innings and gave up 1 run. He just has a manager who doesn't understand that his arm starts getting tired after 75 pitches since he missed the better part of 2 seasons.

Official 2011-2012 NFL Thread
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 10:37 AM) I just hope the Bears front office still isn't gullible enough to believe Hester is a #1 WR. They need a big, playmaking #1 WR for Cutler. If Rice's hip is 100% (and that's a big if), he is an ideal fit. I think the Bears know that they need a WR, but they also know that there's a big risk in overpaying for a WR.

Ken Williams considers youth movement
QUOTE (heirdog @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 10:31 AM) If we're turning over the roster with a firesale...and the best outfield we end up with is Lilli, deAza and viciedo...I'm pissed. We better get some better talent to throw out there even this year. If you completely turn over the roster, that's pretty much what you actually want to do...you put the guys out there that are either cheap/developmental or are guys who for whatever reason no one else wanted. We don't have an obvious star to put out there, so let's see what these guys can do...if 1 of the 2 of them puts up solid numbers in a full season, then you've found yourself a cheap starting OF off the scrap heap, and you can use the savings from that guy to fill in the other hole when you're in a better place to compete.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 10:25 AM) I actually think he's a much better fielder as a RF. Always have since he was a prospect. Most people would be. Rios was a great RF and average CF. The difference right now is that Rasmus's current bat would be below average for an RF and above average for a Cf.
