  1. QUOTE (lostfan @ May 1, 2011 -> 06:11 PM) The increase in severe weather = climate change cause and effect. Whether this last series of storms had anything to do with it or not I know that, but I think you have to be especially careful with things like last week...tornado outbreaks were possible 500 years ago, and they'll be possible 100 years from now, and I've seen little to no evidence that "Tornado outbreaks" specifically become more common with increasing CO2. We've seen "incredibly intense hurricanes" and "massive precipitation events" (i.e. Nashville, repeated midwestern flooding) become more common over the last 2 decades, but we haven't seen an increasing frequency of tornado outbreaks. At least not yet.
  2. QUOTE (fathom @ May 1, 2011 -> 06:18 PM) You keep mentioning Memorial Day at the "get real" date, and it's interesting how poorly our schedule plays out for the next few weeks. Even with the team playing good, a .500 record over the next few weeks would have been decent. And like it or not, being 9 games under on Memorial day is at best dangerous territory. Just like last year, they've left themselves little room to be a .500 team for the next few weeks.
  3. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ May 1, 2011 -> 06:16 PM) How many wins do you think it will take? Like I just said, another few losses and we'll find ourselves having to win at a .600 clip just to get to 85 wins. Right now the AL Central is playing some of the worst ball in MLB, and the only teams playing good ball finished at the bottom of the league last year. One of these teams is going to start fattening up on the rest of the division.
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ May 1, 2011 -> 06:14 PM) In baseball, you can easily make the last 30% of games irrelevant if you fall behind too much and go into sell mode. Which means that we're less than 20% in and we're more than 1/2 the season away from those irrelevant games.
  5. QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ May 1, 2011 -> 06:12 PM) Or the fact that we have played less than 20% of the season and some people are already writing it off? That's not hard at all to believe. Frankly, we're right back in the spot we were last year, where it will take a major, major run to get out of this hole. Memorial day is always the evaluation point, and we're getting closer.
  6. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ May 1, 2011 -> 06:08 PM) its hard to believe, that the Sox have the 2nd worst record in all of baseball. sad. What's harder to believe...that, or the fact that the Twins are worse?
  7. QUOTE (TitoMB @ May 1, 2011 -> 06:07 PM) Yep. Included in my rent. College town FTW! So, you're paying for the games, just indirectly enough that you don't realize it.
  8. QUOTE (TitoMB @ May 1, 2011 -> 06:04 PM) Why the f*** would I waste my money to watch this garbage team play when I can watch them for free on my TV? You're getting free cable?
  9. QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 1, 2011 -> 05:00 PM) If he is traded the option is 100% in effect he gets it all next year that is how MB wanted the contract. MB can also choose to waive the option. If the Sox are totally out of the pennant race this season and clearly not resignning him, that's reason why he might do so.
  10. QUOTE (fathom @ May 1, 2011 -> 05:00 PM) Was Posada that bad defensively where they felt they had to move him to DH? They wanted to try to keep him healthy. He's played 51, 111, and 120 games the last 3 years respectively.
  11. QUOTE (fathom @ May 1, 2011 -> 04:56 PM) So teams are going to be on the hook for 3 years and 42 million (or whatever it is) for Dunn? If they really wanted him, the Yanks would have pursued him instead of Posada. Yeah. The Yankees made a mistake last offseason when they signed Posada to a 4 year deal in 2007 rather than Dunn after 2010. They should have predicted that in 3 years they'd want to move Posada to DH and only signed him for 3 years and then not had him walk away.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ May 1, 2011 -> 04:53 PM) Why would anyone take AJP and his 6 mil contract next year? I also don't think teams would take the Dunn/Konerko contracts off our hands that easily. AJ isn't hitting all that bad. He hasn't been slugging yet, but that's likely a sample size issue.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 1, 2011 -> 04:52 PM) It won't be as hard as you think. The only tough ones to get rid of would be Rios and Peavy. I don't think there will be too much trouble with anyone else. What's going to be hard is getting back legit pieces for the guys. If we're giving people away the contracts will be moveable. If we're insisting on MLB-ready talent in return for anyone other than Danks, we're not getting it.
  14. QUOTE (fathom @ May 1, 2011 -> 04:51 PM) This "sell off" is greatly exaggerated. It's going to be a lot harder to dump contracts than people think. What contracts can be really unload? Buehrle and Jackson are definitely the first two to go, IMO. Pierzynski, Dunn, maybe Konerko, some of the bullpen guys.
  15. QUOTE (Chisoxrd5 @ May 1, 2011 -> 04:41 PM) He's been doing this with Ohman since the first series against Cleveland. This guy hasn't gotten righties out his entire career. Putting on Sox uniform wasn't going to change that fact. Ozzie's been doing this with LOOGYs his entire career. Didn't matter whether it was Logan in 2006, Marte when he was struggling, whatever. Ozzie expects you to finish a full inning even if you're not good at it.
  16. QUOTE (Chisoxrd5 @ May 1, 2011 -> 04:38 PM) And backs it up with a full Will Ohman inning. Didn't Ohman come with a LOOGY instruction manuel? Do never face RH hitting. I think we stopped caring about that a while ago.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 1, 2011 -> 04:36 PM) What part of the Tyler Flowers and Jordan Danks era are you looking forward to exactly? It's not very fun watching it now.
  18. QUOTE (fathom @ May 1, 2011 -> 04:25 PM) I once hear it was based around Gio and Fields, with Danks absolutely not a part of it. which is of course why we didn't get him.
  19. QUOTE (TitoMB @ May 1, 2011 -> 04:23 PM) Good, so we don't have to worry about going the route of the Dodgers. Thanks for the info, Balta Unless someone's going to be divorcing JR.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 1, 2011 -> 04:20 PM) Hello Floyd? I thought he resigned from USC a year or two ago amid scandal.
  21. QUOTE (TitoMB @ May 1, 2011 -> 04:20 PM) I know, but I'm just wondering if there is really a possibility. I do keep forgetting about the Bulls' success, but I imagine he has money set aside for both teams, and probably doesn't dip into one for the other? I could be wrong, I guess. Remember, it's not just one person, it's an ownership group. The Sox are in one of the best financial positions in MLB right now. Little to no debt, very few unmovable large contracts, and a constant rumor of insurance on their worst contract. The team probably turned ~$20 million in profit last year on top of that, and has been profitable pretty much every year for the last decade.
  22. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 1, 2011 -> 04:17 PM) That's what I was joking about regarding the MLB taking over the organization... Yeah, they would trade guys to free up some money I would think. And I am sure JR is making cash hand over fist on the Bulls right now...but yeah, there will be some money lost if this continues... Just like last year...the "trading away people" clock starts on Memorial day.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 1, 2011 -> 04:12 PM) There are plenty of bad coaches in the NBA. How many worse than VDN?
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 1, 2011 -> 04:09 PM) Pretty much any NBA team can say that though. He has been talked about forever, and no one would hire him. Yeah, but how many other teams endured the coaching debacle the Bulls endured over the last 2 years? Maybe the White Sox, but otherwise...
  25. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 1, 2011 -> 04:00 PM) I want the Heat to win because I want the Bulls to beat them, but cheering for either of these teams is extremely difficult. I feel the exact same way except about the Celtics.
