  1. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 4, 2011 -> 01:00 PM) I agree that the US govt has been treating them with kid gloves, but there is a reason for it. I am saying that there is no reason for the US to escalate the rhetoric. Yes, this is true. The Administration itself gains nothing from going hard against Pakistan in public. It could even hurt their position if Congress starts threatening to cut off funding.
  2. The timeline is the key here. KSM and the other guy were heavily tortured in 2002 as we were trying to find an excuse to invade Iraq. That's when the 180 waterboardings in a month happened. The Torture program was, as far as we know, stopped by early 2003-2004, because it had served its purpose (giving us an excuse to go into Iraq). By all accounts, the name of this courier was not learned until somewhere in the range 2005-2007. If it had been obtained via torture, it would have been learned in 2002 when the intense torture happened. In other words, the torture itself, 180 waterboardings in a month, were totally ineffective at obtaining the name of this courier. The statement that the intel was obtained from people who had been tortured is probably correct, but there are only a couple possibilities. Either the torturers in 2002 were only interested in Iraq and simply never wanted to hear anything about Bin Laden's network, or the detainees being tortured held out and did not give up that name until years after the intense torture had passed. Neither one of them builds a strong case for torture.
  3. QUOTE (Hawkfan @ May 4, 2011 -> 09:16 AM) Disagree with thread, show the sox some love. They've made what looked like great investments. Although there was obvious risk, they threw their money out there to give us fans a great team. Lets continue to support them so that we can continue to see great white sox baseball. If nothing else, how many people get to actually see a no-hitter in person? Go to a Sox game and you've got a real chance. Maybe even a perfect game.
  4. WTF is wrong with Virginia's Attorney General?!?
  5. QUOTE (Hawkfan @ May 4, 2011 -> 09:10 AM) Back up the truck!! Turn this place into a parking lot! haha I'm giving them two more weeks, then I have to make a judgment on the quality of this team You missed about 1/2 of the quote.
  6. Hey, one of the coaches acknowledged that a player's problems weren't entirely mental!
  7. QUOTE (flavum @ May 3, 2011 -> 11:28 PM) Ethier at 29 games. Past the half-way point. He might be more than half way to his next paycheck as well.
  8. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 3, 2011 -> 12:47 PM) Just saw on SC that Boise has some major violations reporting the dreaded "lack of institutional control". They said it involves more than just the football team though. At least they didn't get no-hit yesterday.
  9. QUOTE (T R U @ May 4, 2011 -> 03:08 AM) Honestly though, I think teams need to draft the best player available.. in the NFL and MLB, that's the best strategy you can take.. look at the Steelers and Ravens, they are consistently taking really good defensive players in the top rounds, and they always have insane defenses.. Of course, take away James Harrison (an undrafted FA) and Ray Lewis (top of the first round) from those defenses and what are they?
  10. At least some people got hits.
  11. QUOTE (Be Good @ May 4, 2011 -> 12:08 AM) Re: Bin Laden's Death Well it doesn't look like the military-industrial complex will end anytime soon. That being said, I would think the whole defense industry will benefit, at least short term. It's like the banks. Name a decision that has been taken in the last 20 years that didn't benefit them.
  12. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 4, 2011 -> 08:19 AM) Rumsfeld: “It is true that some information that came from normal interrogation approaches at Guantanamo did lead to information that was beneficial in this instance. But it was not harsh treatment and it was not waterboarding.” Here's Panetta's original quote. With a studder thrown in there it's not exactly clear what he's saying.
  13. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 3, 2011 -> 10:13 PM) Panetta confirmed advanced interrogation techniques, including waterboarding, produced the intel they needed to find Bin Laden. If it didn't play a part I don't see why he wouldn't have just said so. If that's true, then that means waterboarding has been resumed some time after 2007.
  14. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ May 3, 2011 -> 06:45 PM) You would think that this rash of DUI's would cause some blowback against the players by the Commissioner, but you know that won't ever happen. Eventually someone's going to kill a bystander while DUI and that'll shake things loose.
  15. QUOTE (Anderson Cooper's Quivering @ May 3, 2011 -> 11:15 PM) With the frequency that the Sox put up statues, I am surprised Joe Borchard doesn't have one yet. Buehrle would have to shoot JR's pet deer for the Sox to not retire his number and put up a statue. Hall of Fame is a stretch though. How long did it take for Burt Blyleven? Who has a statue out there that you think doesn't deserve one?
  16. I was only 13 in the strike year...so I have no choice but to go for 2006.
  17. QUOTE (Real @ May 3, 2011 -> 11:16 PM) We'll get perfect gamed on Friday, haha, maybe you should go to the Seattle game! You know how cool that would be to see in person?
  18. I spent most of this game playing with my new iPhone.
  19. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 3, 2011 -> 09:58 PM) Are you saying kenny should resign because the owners wont fire coaches? Because there are what 30 GM baseball jobs, I think he should thank whatever deity or non-deity every day that he got to do a job a lot of us would do for free. Hes making millions. If kw'a job is to put the best team on the field and the owner won't give him control over personnel decisions, yes he should
  20. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 3, 2011 -> 09:54 PM) Im pretty sure Kenny doesnt make the calls on who gets fired or not. Then he ought to resign and tell the owner to find someone else who doesnt mind losing.
  21. How does ejax only have two strikeouts?
  22. Stone sounds awful
  23. QUOTE (fathom @ May 3, 2011 -> 09:50 PM) Thursday is going to be a fun day Is thursday an off day?
  24. QUOTE (lostfan @ May 3, 2011 -> 08:49 PM) He did it for the same reason that Obama gave the bulls*** line about how he appreciates Pakistan's help in the speech and strained not to call them out when you know he wanted to. It's just kind of expected diplomatic protocol. Still funny though. However, the congress is free to say whatever they want, and Carl levin, for example, is ripping them.
