  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 02:24 PM) Thata way to stand in the picket lines with guys! Seriously...in a state-level issue, what more can the President do? Edit: There is an active petition drive existing right now to put that law on the ballot this fall, and the POTUS just put himself behind keeping the issue at the front of hte newspapers.
  2. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 26, 2011 -> 04:37 PM) Where is Obama during any of this? Didn't he say once that he'd stand with the Unions if they ever tried to ban collective bargaining? Link.
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 01:57 PM) Usually I side with the owners in these disputes, but with all the head injuries and suicides of NFL players... they ought to cough it up. Trouble is...if the owners offered better retirement health benefits but included a corresponding drop in revenue share to pay for those health benefits, do you think the players would accept that deal?
  4. Remember, available May 17!
  5. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 01:45 PM) The flip side of that is you lose the argument either way because you support Republicans! Well, you should qualify that. He wins quite a bit if he's a high income earner.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 01:39 PM) Without the people who own something, the rest of that doesn't happen. Technically, the only thing preventing the same players from switching to a different league is the contract law. Since most of the stadiums are at least partially, if not totally built and owned by the taxpayers.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 01:37 PM) I was going more towards not buying the inferior American car even though it represents everything you hold dear (employees making lots of money, huge benefits and pensions, cheap and full health insurance) and instead supporting the opposite of that (including trade deficits). You pretty much voted "Republician" because the "Democrat" wasn't good enough. I'd add in "quality gas mileage" as the detail you missed. GM didn't care about that for decades.
  8. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 01:30 PM) Asik clearly needs to get min, and I liked that he was the first option off the bench to replace Noah. He'll get a lot more use if Orlando is the next series.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 01:31 PM) This vaguely seems like the talk about voting for a bad Democrat being better than voting for anyone else yesterday... Wait, so, the fact that I bought a civic when I needed a car instead of waiting the 5 years before buying a true gas/electric car is similar to me voting for a non-perfect Democrat? I guess I can see that.
  10. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 01:12 PM) On the other hand, 2000-2007. 2001-2009 was the greatest era of peace and prosperity this nation has ever known.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 01:25 PM) The government owns it now, you should be rushing out to buy one! You know quite well that if they had produced enough of the Volts to satisfy the pre-orders, I'd be in line.
  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 10:56 AM) I know why you say that as well. I'd rather face the celts b/c it would be much easier to lose. I no longer hate them, and would probably root for them to win if they beat us. That said, a victory against the heat would be way more triumphant. After that 2009 series, I'd be more triumphant to see the C's go down in the conf. finals to us.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 12:20 PM) And you wouldn't be buying a GM at all if the ownership group didn't exist. I haven't bought a GM car because of their ownership group for the last 20 years, does that count?
  14. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 11:50 AM) Lost may have phrased it wrong, but the point stands: NFL teams wouldn't generate any revenue without the players. Why shouldn't they be entitled to a large share of the profits since they're the ones putting their bodies and health on the line and actually bringing the fans in? The players were happy to play under the old agreement, but the owners wanted to end that agreement and hold on to an extra couple billion dollars. Anything offered by the owners that was short of the previous agreement meant that the players would be getting less of a share than they did before. Demanding an extra 2 billion and then coming back and saying "oh, ok, we'll only take an extra billion off the top!" isn't a good deal for the players. The owners refuse to justify crying poor, so the players rightfully resisted giving up a share of the profits. I'm as pro-player as you are here (is that a brand?) but let's also remember one other detail. After Upshaw and Tagliabue, both sides made decisions to ready themselves for a confrontation, and set themselves up in a way that guaranteed one. The Owners negotiated an agreement in 2006 that allowed them a chance to prepare to break the union, a-la what happened in the NHL and NBA. They brought in the guy who ran the owners side in the NHL lost season. They negotiated (illegal) TV contracts to try to cover their own tails while they strove to break the Union. The Players responded by bringing in DeMaurice Smith, a labor dispute litigator. Both sides set themselves up for a lockout. As I said I side with the players more than the owners, but let's not pretend that the players didn't take steps in that direction too.
  15. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 11:55 AM) Strongly disagree. The overwhelming majority of people who buy into this are people who will never vote for Obama anyway. If the Republicans are going to spend their nomination season arguing amongst themselves over exactly how stupid you have to be to buy into this birther crap, then it means they're not actually mounting a challenge to Obama on the issues people who could be swayed from voting for him actually care about. Birthermania isn't going to increase Republican turnout or decrease Democrat turnout. I dunno, I think that telling your voters that the President is a Socialist Muslim Fascist who is coming for your Medicare and will take it back with him to Muslims in Kenya might be a decent turnout message.
  16. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 11:05 AM) I'd have to go with Buehrle's between the legs flip. We might not see another play like that in our lives. Watching it with Hawk announcing makes it that much better. "Look at the play by Buehrle! MERCY!" Although Rooney calling the final two Uribe plays to end the 05 WS are a very close second. Hawk's call on Wise's catch was a better call, IMO.
  17. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 11:36 AM) Remember that terrible op-ed about how things were just peachy in Misrata? http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/africa/04/27...rss_igoogle_cnn Remember how this war was going to keep people alive?
  18. This is why they didn't bother.
  19. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 26, 2011 -> 08:06 PM) Awesome. But you know all this will be federally subsidized, right? Oh wait, it already is. Yeah, how dare the government pay for a census! That's totally unconstitutional!
  20. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Apr 26, 2011 -> 07:25 PM) I understand the time line. Its just the German incident (imo) is the starting point for the entire economic period. You could actually argue that 1914 is the start, but I like to use the end of the war, because I think a lot of Germanys problems stemmed from the loser pays mentality after WWI, not to mention the crippling debt that Germany was already under to pay for the war. The stress just led to 0 confidence in Germany. Prior to 1929, yeah, those were Germany's problems. The country was slowly starting to recover and the NSDAP was a local group of bar brawlers until the crash of 1929.
  21. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 09:03 AM) I'm not so sure you can say they were unlucky with the Peavy and Rios moves. Those were huge gambles 95% of other GM's wouldn't have taken. Same thing with signing Teahen to the long-term deal when it wasn't even necessary (perhaps the ending hasn't been written to that move). If Dunn doesn't produce this year, it will be blamed on his adjusting to a new league, better competition, pitchers with different tendencies of attacking hitters vis a vis the NL, health problems, etc. So far, they've been pounding him with fastballs ever since the microsurgery, but the odds of that HAVE to turn around at some point, don't they? Of all the gambles which went against us, the one with a similar probability of working out (but didn't) had to be Nick Swisher's 2008 offensive flop and resulting alienation from the entire organization, from Guillen on down. I didn't say anything about the Peavy and Rios moves. Adam Dunn hits 40 damn HR every year. If Adam Dunn does not come out of this current slump, the White Sox are the unluckiest team in baseball. You don't sign a guy as consistent as Adam Dunn and have him completely fall apart. You just don't.
  22. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 01:57 AM) A Heat-Bulls ECF would be intensity turned up to 111. It's basically the NBA clash of Good (Rose) vs. Evil (LeBron) I know why people want this. I still want the Celtics.
  23. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 08:27 AM) I didn't realize all the owners made their billions from their NFL franchises. According to Forbes, the average value of an NFL Franchise (pre-lockout) was over a billion dollars.
  24. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 26, 2011 -> 09:51 PM) Speculating that a guy is going to be worth so and so at the deadline is just that. What if Dunn doesn't come out of it? If Adam Dunn doesn't come out of it, then the White Sox are simply the unluckiest team in baseball. No other way to say it.
  25. And it's theoretically impossible for him to fill up a larger place. Whether it be in your heart or anywhere else.
