  1. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 1, 2010 -> 12:10 AM) He'd be stupid to give them till Christmas, because most teams have virtually finalized their rosters by then and aren't going to be looking to give out a big contract to a middle 30s 1Bman. I'm not sure I agree with you at all here. Teams are no where near finalizing their rosters at X-Mas, particularly in the FA market, and particularly in offseasons with questionable team revenue and spending figures. A lot of the guys who are up there in age wound up signed in january last year because teams waited on their asking prices to drop.
  2. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 06:17 PM) Beltre leaves, Youk to 3rd. There's a lot of talk Dodgers might be interested in him, as Loney is likely going to be dealt. Moving Youkilis to 3b is on the list eventually, but I think they want AGon to do that with. They're not going to sign Konerko and wind up blocking the guy that would fit even better. And the Dogers? Spending $30 million? This offseason? Are you paying attention to what you wrote?
  3. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 04:59 PM) That's tough. Javy clearly has the better stuff and has a good track record of success in the NL. MB has been more consistent and has proven he doesnt s*** himself in pressure situations but it's not as cut and dry as you make it seem. $14M for a pitcher like MB is a lot. If I go to fangraphs and say "what has been their career total worth in terms of WAR when translated to dollars", Vazquez has been worth $135, MB56 $133. They started counting those in the same year, so for the most part, they've been roughly similar in terms of dollar value over the period that they count that for. Not to mention that for the long term, Vazquez is 3 years older. And the postseason stuff that we're not counting. And the fact that Mark! is a lefty. And the fact that there's no such thing as UZR for a pitcher yet.
  4. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 04:39 PM) I do agree with this. That one dude's description of his grandmother sitting on her porch with her stockings rolled down keeping score on "just a piece of paper" was way over the top. I liked that anecdote. Made me think of my grandfather and how he missed 05.
  5. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 04:52 PM) Just killed my involvement in this thread with that reference. Kinda think you'll continue posting.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 04:27 PM) Do they have $14 million next year? I know the Dodgers and Cubs don't for sure. Let's put it this way...if there was a team that had $20 million to spend and need of a reliable, near the top of the rotation 200+ innings, they'd be crazy if they didn't want MB. They might not want to give up a top 5 prospect at the same time to do it...but if it was just the money...absolutely. How much did the Braves give up 2 years ago for Javy Vazquez, who makes $11.5 million, and then how much did the Yankees give up last year for Javy Vazquez, who makes $11.5 million? You're telling me that if you had the choice between giving up $14 million for MB and $11.5 million for Javy Vazquez...you'd take Javy?
  7. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 03:10 PM) Even if you want to be shot? For a 5th grade field trip in the early 90's, a friend of mine and I wore quite a bit of Bulls gear to that city. I have no idea how I survived.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 02:55 PM) It won't be. No one is going to pay him $14 million for what he has put up in the last few seasons. Why not? At least according to fangraphs version of WAR...he's been a $12-$20 million pitcher in WAR every year except 2006
  9. Balderdash, I say!
  10. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 01:16 PM) Yes it does Zoroaster disagrees.
  11. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 11:06 AM) I can definitely see where you are coming from, especially with what we know about that era know. Its just that his body went through such a massive transformation after the age of 30 that makes me think he might have been clean earlier. It could just be that he started taking stronger/better stuff and concentrated more on getting buff too. I'm willing to agree it's possible he decided to start in 1999 because I can't prove anything other than he was a heavy THG user starting in 1999. All I ask is that anyone who believes he was clean before that to admit that they can't prove he was clean any more than I can prove he was dirty.

  15. QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 08:52 AM) Understand that I exercise 3-4 times a week, so it's most likely not that. Very well. I recommend you drink heavily.
  16. QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 11:57 PM) Was episode 2 tonight? How much were the '05 Sox glossed over? About 3 minutes before the episode finishes they show the last 30 seconds of the 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 world series.
  17. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 11:39 PM) Watching this doc, the one thing that gets me is the reason Bonds became the mammoth he was. He was this incredible 5-tool player, definite Hall of Famer, but his jealousy of all the attention that McGwire/Sosa were getting turned him into the beast hitting 73 homers. He could have been a legend either way but jealousy made him do that. Looking at his stats though, his .609 OBP in 04 is still ridiculous, steroids or no steroids. I'm still never going to be convinced that he was clean before 1999. He could just as readily have switched enhancers to Conte's stuff and been on something like the stanozolol that Palmeiro used, to just give him some recovery assistance. Stealing 400 bases can beat up a body, for example.
  18. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 12:46 AM) So true. Try exercising. Or chemical assistance. Either way.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 10:38 PM) They should have just called it The Daily Show. Everyone would have thought it was hilarious then... Yeah...because John Stewart regularly abducts people and locks them in his sex cave. That's why Jimmy Carter can't stay off that show.
  20. QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 11:51 PM) They need to re-fit the corner outfield with youth that get on base. Basically, they need to replace Carlos Quentin with the 2008 Carlos Quentin.
  21. QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 11:14 PM) That also damn near eliminates them from the top 15th pick. Realistically this happened a long time ago.
  22. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 06:02 PM) Hasn't AJ already batted 4th earlier this season? He has 8 at bats in the cleanup spot this year.
  23. Obviously someone edited their post.
  24. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 05:34 PM) It's a bit of a double-edged sword too. He's unwilling to invest in the future when it stands to risk the immediate present. Personally, i kind of love that philosophy. Although, i will admit their has to be a time where we cut our losses and start building towards the long-term. The amazing thing is though...we've been both competitive the last 3 years for the division, and at the same time...our system may be somewhat bare, but it's better than it was at the start of the 2008 season by a long shot. KW has pulled off to some extent the trick of keeping the immediate present at competitive levels while gradually improving the minors to the point that it's producing a legitimate piece or two every year.
