Official 2010-2011 NCAA Football Thread
It'd be really nice if Indiana could somehow parlay this new conference split into finding a way to not be the worst football team in the Big 12

Chris Sale Appreciation Thread (FIRE KEITH LAW)
QUOTE (kane0730 @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 04:55 PM) Maybe if Jackson keeps this up, he'll sell Jackson high. If their rotation returns next year, its going to handcuff KW in the bullpen & line-up. I think KW might well find it nearly impossible to trade Jackson. Teams will be skeptical of a 1-2 month performance...Jackson is a FA after next year which will reduce the price other teams would offer, and frankly...teams are going to be extra unwilling to be the 4th team to trade for the guy in 3 years and the 5th to have him.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 04:53 PM) If he trades Danks, which I wouldnt put past him, it would be for an impact bat now with at least one high upside prospect. Danks is one of the better young lefties in the league and is signed relatively cheap (arbitration) for two more years. He should rightfully command a boatload for him. Here's the problem though...the Brewers, for example, don't have any high upside, upper minor league arms right now. If they did they'd probably already have them in the majors. Their top pick last year, Eric Arnett (who some here were interested in) has an ERA of nearly 7 this year. Another of their pitchers is working on his 2nd drug suspension (100 days).

QUOTE (kane0730 @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 04:46 PM) Probably not an OFer. I'm thinking Fielder. I've thought about this...but really, I can't see KW giving up 2 years of D1 for 1 year of Fielder at a higher cost. It's just not like him.

By the way...one thing that we've gotten repeatedly from KW since 2005 is that he clearly seems to think you can't have too much pitching. Every year he hasn't come into the season with "too much starting pitching" he's been burnt on it. I can't fathom kenny starting the year with Peavy, Floyd, Buehrle, Jackson, and Sale, with no obvious backup option.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 04:42 PM) Yeah, I really think Kenny is going to be shopping Danks all off-season, and hopefully for a legit OF. Who would get replaced?

QUOTE (kane0730 @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 04:40 PM) I think he's going to be giving a shot to win a starting job next year, and KW will trade Danks this winter. If that happens...it doesn't just give him "a shot" to win a starting job...it basically gives him a starting job...unless someone else is signed as a FA.

The September Call Ups
QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 04:35 PM) He doesn't need to ''teach him'' as far as talking to him. Tyler has eyes or he could look at tape. (pitch calls, diffrent situations, etc.) Hopefully he's been doing that already.

The September Call Ups
QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 04:25 PM) I want Flowers learning as much as possible the last month in a pennant race from A.J./Castro. AJ has shown zero interest so far in teaching anything to any potential replacement.

The environment thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 04:11 PM) Well this is interesting. A man was apparently upset that the Discovery Channel wasn't doing enough to save the planet, so he has now gone in with at least a gun and taken hostages. Weird. I mentioned that in the catch-all earlier. If you're interested...here's the cached webpage that appears to be his legitimate list of demands.

8/31 Games
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 04:04 PM) I hope Ozzie doesn't really think Omar is likely to hit .285 again in 2011. I'll be absolutely shocked if we get through the offseason without that being part of the plan.

QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 03:56 PM) He needs to learn some control first before I start doing back flips. I think part of the "Control issue" with Sale is just that this is his first exposure to hitters of any level other than the college level. In college, his stuff was so far ahead of the hitters that people would still swing at things outside of the zone, whereas now they're being more patient. That said...his college numbers suggest these control issues aren't going to dog him long term. Last year, between college and the Gulf Coast league, he walked 23 batters in 158 innings. Read that again. After today in the bigs he's walked 7 batters in 10 innings. If you run that ratio to 158 innings, that's a 110 walk pace. He's walking people right now at nearly 5x the rate he did in college. That's as good of an argument as I can possibly make that this is going to be a temporary thing for him.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 03:41 PM) I could only tell from the MLB.com AT BAT images...so Sale's slider is a hard breaking one like Liriano's that's 89-92 MPH? No wonder everyone is worried about an injury with that kind of torque. Really...he reminds me an awful lot of 2006 Liriano in his raw stuff. He needs some control work to reach that point...but that's the kind of "stuff" he's bringing to the table. He could well be better if he has a better change.

Konerko....
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 03:43 PM) BA's "hunnies" have already petitioned for an image on the CF wall immortalizing his catch to end Game 163. Huh? I think that the use of the "BA" earlier in this thread was an abbreviation for bad-"think you're using to sit on your chair".

Konerko....
QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 03:28 PM) I've looked at the stats and I know Paulie won't get MVP. I just have a hard time imagining Josh Hamilton having as many clutch hits or carrying the team the way Konerko does. I feel like he is numbers without substance. Cabrera on the other hand I can see. Hamilton's numbers improve when it is close and late. 1.164 OPS in high leverage spots.

Konerko....
QUOTE (stretchstretch @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 03:20 PM) hopefully that statue will be of him rounding first base with fist raised in the 7th inning on Oct 23, 2005 as I watch from (what was at the time) sect 134, row 10, seat 10 Yeah, that would work.

Konerko....
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 03:20 PM) Do you disagree with my point? Here's the list of guys currently on statues: Frank Thomas will have his there next year. Paul Konerko has been on this team for 11+ years now. He keyed a world series run and was the ALCS MVP that year, He's basically 2nd on the White Sox career offensive production list right now (HR, RBI) behind the Hurt, he produced more than several of the guys with statues already. His statue is assured.

QUOTE (T R U @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 03:15 PM) either way, hes having a pretty damn good year that I think is going unnoticed by most everyone who isnt a part of this board.. This is probably 100% true.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 03:13 PM) Looking down the road, is it a forgone conclusion that we'll see a picture of Paulie on the wall with a statue of his on the concourse? Absolutely.
