  1. By the way...today's incident illustrates another point...accidents and injuries are extremely common on oil rigs. The former MMS logged 39 incidents in a 5 month stretch of 2009. No one would have ever heard of this incident had it not been for BP.
  2. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Sep 2, 2010 -> 03:02 PM) I'd bet that if one of those guys are traded we'll at least get a competent mlb starter back as part of the deal. Kenny loves to have 6 capable sp's around it seems and I highly doubt we rush Sale to the rotation. Hence the dilemma for both teams...what team is going to give up a non-overpaid competent back of the rotation starter for any of those guys except Floyd (Buehrle, D1, and Jackson already have looming FA's/retirements, Peavy injury issue) in addition to giving up another reasonably valuable piece...and why would the Sox make a move to make their rotation worse if it doesn't make the lineup significantly better?
  3. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 2, 2010 -> 02:57 PM) A lot of guys have wanted our starters rescued in the fifth or sixth and start the bullpen parade. If a starter is getting shelled, then that could well be the right choice. Gavin was imploding in the 6th inning a couple starts ago, but Ozzie left him out there for a string of something like 6/7 consecutive guys reaching base.
  4. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 2, 2010 -> 02:52 PM) Some people in the game threads beg for the lefty-righty stuff to start in the fifth inning. Not a fair way to state it. We beg for that because we don't want Mark Kotsay continuing his 0-for-the-season against lefties with RISP in the 5th inning.
  5. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 06:55 PM) I'd never even heard of that person until I saw this. I went with the first person I found, because that's sort of what was asked..."how long until". Better examples are appearing today.
  6. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Sep 2, 2010 -> 02:46 PM) True but 104?!?!? Has he hit 104 on a big league calibrated gun? And can he do so repeatedly?
  7. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 2, 2010 -> 02:47 PM) My class in Winning 101 was taught by Al Davis. "Just Win, Baby." If you win, the guy in charge is doin' something right that day and gets the last laugh on all second guessers. So, since Al Davis's team has been the worst team in the NFL for the last half-decade +, I conclude that everything you learned in your class on winning is wrong.
  8. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Sep 2, 2010 -> 02:37 PM) Was she drunk? I think a lot of us can say we're familiar with freezing up during a public speaking attempt. That said...most of us don't do that while we're running states.
  9. This article ran yesterday. Mariner energy supposedly owned that platform.
  10. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 2, 2010 -> 12:44 PM) The Big Unit never slowed down. Nolan Ryan is the obvious counterpoint.
  11. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Sep 2, 2010 -> 12:40 PM) Plus, as of this morning the eye was supposed to past well east of the cities, limiting their exposure to Tropical Storm force winds and a lot of rain. More so in Boston, less so in NYC. Even then though...the big risk for those cities is inundation, and that doesn't necessarily correlate with intensity at the time of impact.
  12. Serious question; How far should the government be going right now in pushing for evacuations from Boston or NYC?
  13. QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ Sep 2, 2010 -> 11:56 AM) Paulie will be the next one. Mark might retire first.
  14. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Sep 2, 2010 -> 12:07 PM) Sure it is, but it's one that pretty much every Cuban playing in MLB makes. Yeah...but the cost/benefit calculation is somewhat enhanced when you compare spending a lifetime in near-poverty in Cuba with MLB.
  15. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 2, 2010 -> 11:52 AM) I'm not a petro engineer. Hopefully this is just some sort of accident on the rig and not another blowout. Worth noting is that blowouts do not necessarily equate to large scale uncontrolled spills. However...there are enormous numbers of things that can go wrong when you're moving around explosive material under pressure. Particularly when you decide that safety inspections and requirements are an unnecessary cost and an inappropriate infringement upon liberty.
  16. The grand old hurricane of Earl...he had 10,000 men...
  17. Did you guys hear that there's a hurricane somewhere?
  18. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Sep 2, 2010 -> 02:26 AM) Does anybody else feel like this is all silly talk, and he'll be back without much hesitation from either side? I think there's a real good chance the team will get that done. It'd be silly to let him walk over a couple million.
  19. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 2, 2010 -> 09:06 AM) Why? Hurricane Earl.
  20. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 06:15 PM) With almost 10 percent of Americans out of work, I doubt they are hiring. I wonder when they are going to start calling this a depression and not a recession. A depression is in general a 10% drop in GDP or a recession lasting longer than 2 years. Neither of those states apply to the U.S.
  21. I think Greg may be at least partly right regarding a 3 year deal...I could potentially see an AL team offering him that kind of deal, but that's a real risk for a team that can't put a guy at a DH in the last year or two if he starts to break down. Then the question is, who in the AL is spending money on a 1b this year (and not waiting on Fielder/Gonzalez next year). Boston and NY are sorta set at 1b; NY might need a DH but ARod is starting to head that way. Tampa Bay needs 1b help but they have no money. Texas needs 1b help but they might not have any money. Angels have Morales. Oakland, Seattle have young guys. Minnesota might, if Morneau never comes back. Detroit is set. KC has about 4 1b. Cleveland has youth there. Toronto needs a 1b, but are they offering PK $30 million? Baltimore (no). Teams in the NL could use him. The Mets, the Braves possibly, the Giants, the Dodgers possibly (no one knows their finances), the Cubs, but all of those teams might hesitate to bring in a Konerko, and other guys like Laroche, Derek Lee, Carlos Pena are out there also.
  22. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 05:43 PM) Over/under on hours until he's used to tarnish all environmentalists? 2? (Her bio)
  23. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 05:34 PM) He mentions 'anchor babies', how long until someone tries to pin him as a 'eeeeevil teabagger'? He mentions climate change too. The Socialist *****.
