Tea Party
QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 03:23 PM) i forgot which comedian used this in their act... if you're in a theater and a man collapses, someone screams, "is there a doctor in the house" and you can't stand up, you're not really a doctor. I'd stand up but that's because I'm a trained first responder.

A brief playoff round would settle that...fwiw.

White Sox @ Tigers
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 03:02 PM) Is Teahen that much of a liability at 1st? Teahen is 4/29 career against Verlander. Man...there's no way to win this one is there. Can Castro play 1b? He's at least 1/3 career against him.

White Sox @ Tigers
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 02:56 PM) cst_sox Still no Konerko today. Blame the back. Konerko is 4/34 career against Verlander with a .328 OPS. I'm not sure I'm that angry about him getting an extra day off today. (Kotsay, of course, is 2/17 career against him).

Frightening Discovery
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 02:50 PM) Actually the Ozzie haters might hope Thome does brutalize us and we still win the three games. Ozzie seems pretty sensitive over the Thome issue and he might have a blowup of epic proportions in the media if Thome has 3 big games and he keeps getting asked about it. When Oz blows up, there's always the risk he'll do something that'll finally get him fired which would please oh, so many on here for some reason. Hell...I'd be happy with Thome hitting 12 HR in those 3 games if we won all 3 of them. Aside from the fact that it'd be pretty cool to watch...we'd win all 3 games!

Anyone else keeping an eye on the Rays?
WTF? A couple years ago people buried Konerko? Seriously, WTF? The only bad year he had was in 2007 when his thumb was screwed up. Can you provide specific examples of these people who buried Konerko and how exactly they stated this burying?

Is eBay good/bad/neutral for the economy
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 02:46 PM) Instead of purchasing a new version of something that there's extra of already, you saved $18. You also put $12 into the pocket of the seller. That money will, hopefully, be spent on something more useful than redundant copies of books being produced. It's the classic "broken window" story. I wonder if he has a point specifically in a liquidity trap where we are now though. In the current situation, all of the other rules are reversed; that extra $12 is not likely to be spent, it's likely to be saved in some form or used as a method of deleveraging. That's going to alter the calculus away from what you originally said.

Frightening Discovery
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 02:41 PM) And it ain't over yet. You better believe Thome is going to want to have another big series vs. the Sox in the Cell. Big Jim has a 1.086 OPS against righties and a .770 OPS against lefties. His HR exist against both sides when you account for the difference in at bats...but Jimbo has only 4 BB against LHP all year and 45 against RHP, and his batting average is also 40 points lower against LHP. If a lefty makes a mistake to him he still hits it out (See: Matt Thornton). Otherwise though, if you throw 2 lefties with good stuff against him, he'll lose. The Sox have 2 lefties on the mound that series. They need to execute.

Sox need to adjust the rotation for next week
QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 01:51 PM) I feel pretty good about him against them at the Cell though. I actually had to sit down and calculate this one because I don't know where to go for double career splits...but his home ERA against the Twins is still 4.58. Then you think for a moment and realize that there's a game 163 shutout built in there...and you worry a bit more.

Financial News
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 01:39 PM) And as I said, short run, that helps, to a limited and linear extent. There is no multiplier, and there is no growth foundation put in place. And businesses are waiting on the sideline, in part, because they KNOW that the stimulus money is temporary and unsustainable in the long run. They will therefore only expand or increase their investment to match that temporary and small bump. Basically, its less bang for the buck than if they did something more pointed towards future growth. There is no multiplier? That's going to be news to everyone except the Republican party. I could go and easily grab the CBO estimates of the impact of the stimulus package on GDP as a response. Their numbers say it has been well above the original $800 billion price tag. I'll agree that it's less bang for the buck than the ideal case of things like investment in a smart grid, but it's also better than the $500 billion or so in tax cuts that simply got stuck back into T-bill purchases. The other way to look at it long term is...this is work that needs to be done. Due in no small part to the "Small government!" revolution, we're 30 years behind on upkeep of a lot of infrastructure, and I think everyone can admit that it's causing growing numbers of problems. It's going to be vastly cheaper and much more effective to get caught up on it now.

Financial News
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 10:07 AM) Construction spending on infrastructure was a big part of the stimulus the first time. That really has done nothing to get the private sector going. worth noting...the amount from the first stimulus package for comparable road construction spending was on the order of $28 billion (depending on how you count a few line items like defense department renovations). So yeah...it wasn't going to give you a major stimulative jolt...because it was only $28 billion.

Financial News
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 11:12 AM) Well that's true, Done Nothing is a bit much. Just having more people employed, even in temporary jobs, will stimulate the private sector to an extent in the short run. But it does very, very little in the long run. In the long run we're all dead. More serious point...there's actually a big long-term set of points worth noting. First...interest rates on government bonds are at historic lows right now. Which means...it's far, far cheaper to do infrastructure work right now than it has been at any point since probably the 30's. Secondly, if, as I've argued...the right move is to be counter-cyclical...then by having people employed right now by the government, you're filling the very large output gap between what the economy could produce and what it is producing, and as such you're giving those businesses reluctant to invest funds because of lack of customers in the short term exactly what they need...customers in the short term.

Catch All Anything Thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 09:14 AM) There is also a Claritin-D version, that includes a decongestant. My usual scheme (mainly full-year indoor dust mite allergy problem): 1. Claritin on days when allergies bug me lightly for a few hours 2. Claritin-D on days when I know in advance it's going to get to me (i.e. staying in a hotel). 3. Benadryl for intense, "I can't breathe so I can't sleep" flareups.

QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 6, 2010 -> 11:47 AM) He and Boldin make for good targets for Flacco. If Flaccoo is consistent, that is a top 5 team. Missing Ed Reed for at least the first 6 weeks is murder though...

How can anyone...
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 09:42 AM) Teahen played 1B yesterday, has played it before, and is perfectly capable of the rare appearance over there. There really is no need to have Kotsay on this team if he is going to be useless with the bat. Well, they did really, really want to try to make Teahen into a regular, everyday 3b coming into the season...which was why they signed him to that contract...they thought if they gave him the position full time he'd improve at it more...and they were proven wrong. On paper it sorta makes sense...but overall it's a mistake compounding a bigger mistake.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 09:40 AM) Wrong path again. Considering that no matter what he proposed, it'd die in Congress, why not at least propose something with better balance between old and new infrastructure?

Financial News
So, I see the big new thinking is a $50 billion bank for investment in bridges, roads, airports, and rails. While I'll be the first to admit that's needed as a downpayment...that's not particularly exciting is it. Hell, if you're going to talk about infrastructure investment...why aren't the electrical grid and the water/sewer grids at least included on the list? They might be in more need than the others.

9/6 Games
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 08:37 AM) The system doesn't look too hot, but you have to look at the injuries as well, as being a major reason for it. Mitchell, Thompson and Phegley all missed major time, and that's a big chunk of the top talent right there. Morel playing injured but still played well, Remenowsky and a few lower level guys got hurt too. Danks was playing hurt. I like the way the 2010 draft ended up, and I've liked all three of the most recent drafts. A lot of the guys above will likely come back strong in 2011. I'd bet this system looks a lot better next season, unless we trade away a bunch of key guys. The AA team seemed weak this year and the AAA team wound up mostly either called up or traded, but there seemed to be a lot of guys making noise at the lower levels too.

In the NFL, a key part of the matter is that contracts are non-guaranteed.

Daniel Hudson watch thread
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 6, 2010 -> 05:54 PM) Hudson's only problem with the White Sox was throwing strikes consistently. When he does it, and when he did it with the White Sox, he was hard to beat. And...that's a very, very common thing for a rookie.

It would have been nice to know last night . . .
Somehow...I think if others take off with the "It would have been nice to know last night"... point as a thread starter, we might be able to get this one to last a while.
