QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 06:02 PM) I don't know about it taking a fool to want him. Seems like the kind of guy KW would target if he had the same stats with another team. Only 28, one MVP type season but injury prone. Sox once took a chance on the same type of guy (Dye) who ended up a WS MVP. Yeah...but you target him once he's DFA'd or becomes a free agent. You don't give up stuff to him while thinking that he'll turn it around with your team...like, for example, what the White Sox did with Mark Teahen. Other teams would jump on him if he was released. Look at the arbitration numbers though. He's going to go from pre-arb this year to a multi-million dollar player; maybe $4-$5 million if I was just guessing. If he puts up another .800 OPS, godawful defense season or an injury-riddled season, then he'd be overpaid at that amount...and if the White Sox wanted to keep him next offseason, they'd have to offer him a big raise in arbitration again; that'd be talking about $7 million+. Someone would sign him for a million or two if he hit the DFA market, but you've got to think about the contracts here. Teams would be signing him looking for a bargain. The Sox would be getting the same treatment if they tried to trade him. It's not that you'd be a fool to want him; it's that you'd be a fool to go after him without paying attention to his contract status.

QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 10:57 AM) Is iDump available for PCs? Is this a serious question? Because it sounds damn funny and the answer to it was found after googling the word "idump".

What happens when Chris Sale bulks up?
FWIW, according to his AAP page, Sale is listed at 183. He lost a fair amount of mass early this summer though (5-10 lbs) in a bout of food poisoning.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 05:49 PM) I'm done with Q for this year but against trading him after a bad year. Give him another year and see if he can rebound. He's a force if he can get it together. There's no reason to trade him frankly; if he puts up an .800 OPS with bad defense next year, he'd be a DFA candidate. You're just not going to get anything for him unless the other GM is a fool. The real thing you have to do in determining what to do about him next year is figure out behind the scenes what's going on with him. Is he still hurting, is he just lost at the plate, is this just all in his head or is he geniuinely never going to recover from his physical issues.

Chairman Stepping In To Keep Konerko?
QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 05:07 PM) 3 years $36 million? Without knowing the salary limits for the team...I'd consider matching another team if that's what it took. Honestly though, I'd be surprised if any other team would go that far for him. Abreu had a great year last year but only wound up with 2/$18. Most of the teams that could use a 1b bat are in the NL, and a lot of them won't have money to spend. Top of that list is San Francisco, they might be legit competition...but in terms of giving a guy in his mid 30's a 3 year deal, I'm not sure they'll go for that any more. Otherwise, most of the teams that might spend money have a 1b and wouldn't sign him as a Dh. Boston (Youk), NYY (Tex), LAA (Morales, with Abreu filling DH spot), NYM (Davis), LAD (Loney and a divorce). Atlanta could use him but they never seem to spend tons of money. Texas could use him but they are coming up on needing to extend Hamilton and just came out of bankruptcy. Toronto could use him but they're in cost-cutting mode. Baltimore bid on him last time but they're so far away right now that I doubt PK14 would want to go there. Tampa could really use him but they're going to be losing guys anyway. Arizona; Laroche and Allen, they're 2 deep there. There's probably going to be an actual glut of 1b types on the market this offseason. Weird thing is, lately...I've been thinking a lot...if Morneau is seriously impaired long-term, and they have any insurance on his contract, they'll probably even be looking to spend money there, and the Twins aren't dumb enough to neglect the fact that signing him would cripple one of their biggest competitors.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 11, 2010 -> 03:27 PM) I love how Zambrano is playing his way back onto the roster next year, just in time for a slow start, a blow up, and a shelling from the Sox. I love how dead this thread is.

2010 AL Central Catch-All
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 02:18 PM) Ok. But I don't think that has anything to do with the 05 WS title. Most managers in all sports are stubborn as s*** when it comes to the way they run their games and organizations. Stubborn is the word to use not arrogant or egotistical because they have a ring. The weird thing though...Ozzie was doing something with the DH spot that he had never done before. In 05, he had Everett and Thomas as near-full time DH's. 06-09 he had Thome there nearly full time. He absolutely insisted he was going to be right on what everyone else thought was an obvious mistake...but you can't say he was stubbornly insisting that he needed to do what he'd done in previous years...he was stubbornly insisting that what he'd done every other year, including 2005, was wrong.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 11, 2010 -> 02:02 AM) I think he'll pick it up in other parks. He'll always hit better at Coors, but who wouldn't? I wonder if he isn't a case of some sort of a beyond Coors effect...something we've seen talked about for our team and the Cell...where he's a great hitter at home because he adapts his swing to dominate the park where he plays half his games (i.e. swinging for the fences at the Cell) but then is unable to adapt to other parks when he leaves it.

QUOTE (scenario @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 06:22 PM) The reason I don't want to trade a starter is that I don't believe Peavy will be ready to go. I want proof of health before I would consider moving another quality starter. and even then...I'm still not convinced he'll last the season if he starts at 100%. Or that he will be back to his form from a few years ago.- Chicago White Sox. Kansas City Royals. 7:10 PM CST
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 04:46 PM) With DV at first and Paulie DHing? Or DV at 1b and PK playing 1b in Minnesota.- If anyone here still likes Teahen...
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 04:07 PM) I agree that working with Viciedo has to be a priority. The question is whether they want to make him the 3rd baseman of the future or start grooming him for 1st base. Regardless, his bat is going to be important to the Sox for years to come...hopefully. If Konerko doesn't sign, I would expect Tank to be groomed for 1st. You've got to expect him to be a 1b. It'd probably be a couple years at best before he'd be anything but a liability at 3b. He has the tools there but needs a lot of coaching and experience.- Chicago White Sox. Kansas City Royals. 7:10 PM CST
QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 04:12 PM) Morel has played very well at all levels. .320 at AAA and he's a plus defender. Morel's a lot more likely to take over 3b full time next year if Vizquel gets hurt than DV is.- Why Do the Sox Suck Vs. Central Division Teams?
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 03:58 PM) I agree 100 percent caufield. Nice post. So the question is ... did the Sox actually overachieve? I think our starters were good, not great. Bullpen same as last year. OK at times, actually very good during the 25-5, but overall unreliable. Hitters got off to that hellish start, totally unacceptable April and May. Did the team overachieve? I thought this team coming in was a low-90's win team...if Carlos Quentin performed up to anything close to his 2008 standard. He hasn't. If I can give the qualifier "except for Carlos Quentin" I'd say yes, this team overachieved, because if you told me Carlos would have an OPS around .815 in September, I'd have thought this was at best a .500 team. Everything else i thought we could recover from. If Peavy got hurt, we had Hudson to step in. If Jenks stank, we had Putz and Thornton to step in. I thought just about everything on the offense hung on Quentin's bat, and we managed to win games around that.- 2011
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 03:59 PM) I don't see Manny playing for the Sox next year. And Omar is a switch hitter, but I doubt he starts as many times next year. If Manny isn't on the White Sox, I think it's because he saw that the contract offers weren't there for him and retired. I think they'll try to use Omar as much as this year, if not more. Whether his bat and body will be able to handle it who knows...but Ozzie will try.- 2011
QUOTE (typewritermender @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 03:55 PM) Trade: CQ, Floyd, Harrell or Threets, plus a midlevel position prospect For Prince Fielder (think that would get it done?) Quentin + Floyd might actually be enough to do that, I'm not sure...the righty is the guy the Brewers would want as the key part though. Threets is, however, worthless in a trade, as it'll be 2012 before he's back to pitching after Tommy John surgery- If anyone here still likes Teahen...
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 03:23 PM) It's hard to use Viciedo for that argument though. There were many people on this board very disappointed or upset at the season DV had last year. I don't remember what side of that fence you were on, but there weren't too many people penciling DV into the 3B role in 2011 8 months ago. And you shouldn't have been. But mid-2011 or 2012 was a possibility, as it was with Morel, and Teahen is still on the hook for $5.5 million in 2012. If you thought that changing hitting coaches would make the .900 OPS from the 2nd half of 2006 reappear, then that's a defensible contract. I don't know what was talked about behind the scenes about him so I'll hold that open...but this guy we've got isnt' worth that.- If anyone here still likes Teahen...
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 03:19 PM) Morel wasn't exactly "waiting in the wings" when the extension was signed. Viciedo might have been though, and that was an awful lot of money to commit to a guy with the career history of Teahen. Even if you didn't expect Morel to be ready for 2-3 years...that was a lot of money to commit to a guy like Teahen. It might have made sense if you thought he was a "Walk will fix him!" kind of guy who had an obvious and correctable swing flaw or something like that.- Daniel Hudson watch thread
QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 03:10 PM) I was saying his slider was awful compared to reports of it being his best pitch. I was always impressed with his change-up, but he definitely had control issues with his fastball. His control issues, at least to my eyes...were almost entirely of the sort I expect from a rookie; he was trying to paint the corner on every pitch rather than being willing to miss over the plate.- 6-0 and 0-6
QUOTE (JPN366 @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 02:24 PM) Elaborate please. You didn't know? The Pastafarian heaven has a beer volcano. And a stripper factory, but that's another discussion.- How honest can a politician be and be re-elected?
If you don't deny you're taking money from lobbyists/special interests, you're done. If you don't simultaneously take a crapload of that money, you're done.- 6-0 and 0-6

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 01:59 PM) I'd like to see the Sox offer AJ a one year deal. He may or may not take it though. I think he may hesitate at it...but I think he's going to find exactly as many chances to be a starting catcher next year as the Sox had potential trading partners for him back in June; basically zero.- The Democrat Thread
