QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 10:11 AM) No, but I also think that saying you will, then backing out, is equally dumb. Obviously...but the mistake wasn't backing out, it was originally saying that you would. Backing out with that candidate is 100% the right move; you take less damage from backing out than you do from having her make Jan Brewer look prepared and informed.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 10:07 AM) Sharon Angle agrees to on-air debate with Harry Reid, station schedules event with Reid campaign, then Angle campaign calls back and says nevermind. She really does appear to be pulling defeat from the jaws of victory. You really think that Angle unscripted and on stage next to Harry Reid is a wise move?

Nick Masset on the mound, runners on 1st and 3rd. Runner on 3rd takes off. Players yell that he's taking off. Masset turns towards 2nd, the unoccupied base. Masset turns towards 1st. Masset turns towards home and throws Throw is too late, winning run scores. Video.

If anyone here still likes Teahen...
QUOTE (G&T @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 09:20 AM) I don't see why he would be good off the bench. He is terrible defensively and the AL doesn't really require pinch hitters (which he also isn't very good at). At least Kotsay can be adequate defensively to give PK a rest. If Teahen hit for more power then you can live with him, but he doesn't do that either. Mark Kotsay is adequate defensively...at 1b. He hasn't exactly been tried at 3b, and he can't handle RF enough for the manager to give him playing time there. Your post drives me to ask...is Teahen also terrible as a backup 1b? He's played there 37 games in his career and made 1 error. It's useless to use any advanced stats over that type of sample size, but there's nothing obviously terrible in his defensive performance at that spot.

QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 09:19 AM) Sort of a double edged sword. His job is to defend existing laws, even when he works to have them repealed. On the other hand, there's no good reason for them to continue defending this crap and trying to continue expanding it.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 09:00 AM) I dont remember Konerko saying anything in ST about it being time to leave the organization. And all season he has been talking about how much he loves the Sox organization. If he wants to stay, my guess is that he stays. I certainly hope so...but frankly, after some of the anti-power-hitter nonsense we keep getting...I worry.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 08:36 AM) Plus, is he still a full time catcher? The stuff I've read suggests he's actually gotten better behind the plate as the season has gone on...but let's be honest here...the Red Sox have given up 136 stolen bases this year. That is 18 more steals against the Sawx than against any other team in the AL. And the Red Sox have thrown out 22% of base stealers this year...the only team worse in the AL is the Yankees. You put him behind the plate...the opponents will have a field day on the bases. You might be able to get by with having VMart be the everyday catcher for Buehrle and Danks since they can slow down the running game on their own...but with Peavy, Floyd, and probably Jackson (I haven't seen his move since he never has anyone on base in games I watch), a single by anyone faster than Jim Thome will basically be a double.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 08:39 AM) I'd be fine with Mark Teahen off the bench...much like Kotsay was last year. But the Sox way overpaid on his extension to make him a sub/PH. However, you have to wonder if KW would recognize that failure of a signing and either trade him away for nothing or be okay with him being a sub/PH. The problem with trading him away is that you need another team who wants him at that price. There's no reason to pay 1/2 of his deal to make him go away.

The other way to read that article DA is "The Bulls are hesitant to give up Noah and the Nuggets are hesitant to take back Deng's contract". Therefore, it's a waiting game. The Bulls can offer Deng + the 09 draft class and play the wait and see game, but the Nuggets are the team with the deadline. It gets to the end of this season, the lockout starts, and that could be it.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 07:17 AM) I saw he rejected a two year deal from Boston. What kind of money would he be asking for in a longer term deal? Fangraphs is guessing he'd wind up in the 4/$48 range.

QUOTE (G&T @ Sep 10, 2010 -> 08:27 AM) BR says they are 32-31 in his games. That makes them 45-31 in games he doesn't play. And 30-28 when he starts, since I was wondering about that.

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 9, 2010 -> 08:59 PM) One of the more under-reported stories during ST was that Konerko said he thought it would be time to leave the organization after this season. I was amazed there wasn't a lot of talk about it in the media. Due to his success this season, I say its 50/50 if he returns. I'd love to see him back, but if he's going to get 3/30 this offseason, I wish him luck. I'd give 3/30. Here's the scary thing I'm thinking. I'm looking for teams that might have money to spend and could use a RH hitting, veteran 1b for next year and who might in a couple years be willing to move that guy to DH to finish his season. You know who pops onto that list? If Justin Morneau's condition is as bad as I think it is...the Minnesota Twins are very much on that list. Especially if his contract is insured.

Official 2010-11 NFL Thread
QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Sep 9, 2010 -> 05:58 PM) It was by far the best position ever. Especially considering the Packers told that old QB, once he was done, he was done and that's it. I think Alex Smith would've succeeded as well in that position. With that said, Smith will have his turn this year to show his true ability. He has a good OL, a beast of a RB, Crabtree and Vernon. No way he shouldn't succeed. None of what you said involved him having a good offensive coach/QB coach.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 9, 2010 -> 10:17 PM) I'm just telling you, like 99 percent of all NBA trade talk, the report with Noah is BS. It specifically said Denver doesn't want Deng. It can't possibly work even if the Bulls were to be willing to give up Noah if Deng wasn't involved. Does any team have the cap space left after this season to absorb that cap hit?

QUOTE (Elgin Slim @ Sep 9, 2010 -> 10:18 PM) Sale may have an electric arm, but we saw how good that did for Strasburg. He started 1 season every 5th day and his elbow exploded. Sale has similar mechanics. I think that if they start Sale, he will suffer the same fate as Strasburg in his first season starting. If they can preserve Sale's arm by making him a closer, you do it. Liriano was throwing 98 mph before he had Tommy John surgery, now he throws 92-94. Sale throws 95-97 out of the bullpen, I'd guess that makes him a 92-94 mph guy as a starter. If Sale loses anything on his fastball if he gets injured, it could make him a fringe major league pitcher. We all know how hard reliable closers are to find, Sale seems to have the makeup, and I'd rather have that electric arm out of the bullpen for at least 6 seasons, than an injury prone starter who the team can never rely on, including losing probably 2 seasons of cheap service time for when his elbow explodes. JMO. There's also absolutely no guarantee that working him out of the bullpen is a way to keep him healthy. He could well be throwing harder out of the bullpen as you note, and that could make things go faster. Also, workign and warming up on 60+ days per year instead of 30-35 could tax his arm in a different way.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 9, 2010 -> 08:30 PM) Thanks for making my points so clearly. Obviously, we're bigoted, racist, slimeballs... and necessarily, we must link "conservatives" and "tea party" to this, because after all, it's the only way to keep perpetuating the cycle of destroying anything that could remotely be against the message of today's liberal agenda. Let's throw in some gay hate here while we're at the stereotyping. As for the "Amerikkka" crap, it seems to me that our current president loved that message. The message hasn't changed after those 20 years of sitting in the pews taking notes. Destroy all that doesn't fit your message or beliefs. Call out names, call out bigotry, call out racism, call out everyone for everything and never take responsibility for anything. Oh, the messages here are loud and clear. My little comments and "stupid posts" do have a larger point, and like I said, I'm glad that the points were made in the last 5 pages of this very thread over and over, and really for the last 3-4 years, really. Basically, your defense of the anti-Muslim hate has been: 1. Insist that it has nothing to do with hating Muslims 2. Insist again that it has nothing to do with hating Muslims 3. Be prompted to explain why 4. Increase font size 5. Get called out on the fact that you haven't explained a thing 6. Become outraged at the fact that anyone would dare imply that there's any anti-Muslim sentiment behind the anti-Muslim movement 7. Get prompted to explain why there are anti-Muslim groups popping up everywhere 8. Increase font size. Frankly...if "no arson at Mosque sites" is "destroying anything that could remotely be considered against the liberal agenda", you're damn right I want to destroy that. Because we ought to be better than the B.S. "Be afraid of them!" crap that is being pushed right now.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 9, 2010 -> 10:00 PM) The report is BS. Noah is making $3.1 million this year. They have this thing in the NBA called a salary cap. The Bulls don't have cap space for the trade. For the Bulls to get Carmelo, Deng has to go to Denver or be part of a 3 team trade. WTF? didn't I explicitly say Deng + Noah?

QUOTE (zenryan @ Sep 9, 2010 -> 05:16 PM) Well it would be nice to see the Twins be so far behind that they sell him off next season during the trade deadline. It'd be nice for me to suddenly develop 55 HR power and take over as the White Sox starting RF next year, but really, which of those is more likely?

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Sep 9, 2010 -> 05:02 PM) Am I wrong? Am I missing something on either side? I think there's plenty of reason to be emotionally invested on the pro-side also, if you believe that it'd be a good thing, consistent with the best of American values, to have Muslims freely practicing their religion in that city. That emotion, of course, might be described as "Pride".

2010 AL Central Catch-All
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 9, 2010 -> 05:00 PM) They won't be running that promotion for too long. He should definitely get there before the end of May. I don't know about definitely May. He's 14 away right now, and enough injuries have cropped up that they'll probably try to give him a bit of extra rest down the stretch if the White Sox are eliminated. He didn't hit his 10th home run this year until early July.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 9, 2010 -> 04:11 PM) Asik / Gibson / Thomas Boozer / Gibson / Thomas Melo / Brewer / Korver Brewer/ Korver / Watson / Bogans D-Rose / Watson F*ck it. I'm down. As long as you don't give up both Gibson and Noah such that you can at least have a defensive presence at C for part of the game (and you know, you hold onto DR1)....there's no deal that you could make that would be bad for the Bulls.
