The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (KipWellsFan @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 12:51 AM) Americans are turning against abortion at greater levels now Really? Gallup had one poll about 6 months ago that showed what you suggest, it got large amounts of press, then their next poll showed things back to just about where they've sat for the last 15 years or so, and it got no press. Almost as if there was some statistical phenomenon going on where if you poll on an issue 100+ times over 20 years, you'll occasionally get polls that show odd trends.

QUOTE (KipWellsFan @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 12:12 AM) http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/21/us/polit...nLqHQKdf67O9m0A Not really any proof of anything. But then again, I don't assume all politicians are scum. Clearly, Obama should have booked Letterman that night, then suspended his campaign, did interviews for all 3 major news shows, and changed nothing about his campaign strategy other than canceling on Letterman. That's how you show you're serious about an important issue like that.

Financial News
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 09:32 AM) This is NEW home sales, not existing. So its really mostly about how many new homes are being built. I've said all along, and its still true, I am glad to see these NEW home sales numbers continue to plummet. This is good because it puts less supply on the market. So ultimately, this will help lead to a stronger overall real estate market, since EXISTING home sales make up the majority of it. Believe it or not, this is good news for the real estate market. Bad for new home construction personnel though. The problem with saying it that way is...those are new home sales numbers, not new home construction numbers, and construction numbers kept trying to inch up while the government was dumping billions of dollars into trying to blow the popped balloon back up.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 08:06 AM) Really? It always seemed to me that they'd have success with guys coming out of nowhere, but I guess I never noticed the supposed depth of their system and the failed prospects. They've had plenty of guys that they've found/stolen (i.e. Coghlan recently), but I can think of guys like their entire trade with Detroit for Cabrera who haven't pulled it off and who they really needed.

QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 07:30 PM) I think what makes a lot of sense for Wsox is trade for Berkman, reinstating Teahen, and calling up De Aza replacing Jones, Kotsay, and Lillibridge. I'd rather keep Lillibridge than Beckham right now. There I said it.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 01:21 AM) The trouble is; he had a 9 for 19 / 12 for 31 stretch in the middle of May. He's gotta keep this up for another week or 2 before I believe he's back, he's fooled me before and I don't want to get my heart broken again. One thing worth noting though is that stretch in May involved no HR power, this one has had plenty.

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 06:29 PM) This part isn't true. From the CBA FAQ: The ONLY way that makes sense is if they get Lebron, otherwise they just traded a fairly solid starter for two fringe starters at best (unless other moves are involved). That doesn't change what I said, and you'll note I said that it only makes sense if Lebron is signed. If the Bulls sign Lebron, that move clears their SF spot without a giant change in salary, gets them 2 players, and allows them to retain the MLE plus a small amount because they'd still be a little bit under the cap. You don't use the MLE up before signing the big name guy, you sign the big guy first, then you use the MLE to fill holes and you start working on extending Noah because you no longer care about paying the Luxury Tax.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 06:25 PM) Poverty level 1 person about $5.25 2 @ $7.05 3@ $9.10 These are national poverty rates. Obviously someone living in areas with lower consumer prices will live better. Anyone want to work out a budget for someone earning $7.15 per hour? Also worth noting is that Walmart employees typically don't work 40 hour weeks because management doesn't want them getting close to overtime. 35 hours a week for a full year at $7.15 is $13013 before taxes.

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 06:19 PM) Unless I'm missing something, the Bulls actually GAIN some salary for next year in that trade. Gortat and Pietrus add up to $11.6 mil for next year while Deng makes a little under $11.4 mil. Gortat is signed forever too (at least 13/14), and Pietrus has a player option for 11/12. Considering Gortat sucks, that doesn't make much sense to me. Doesn't really matter as long as the Bulls aren't within $200k of the cap. Assuming that Lebron is signed, then the Bulls are instantly a title contender, and still have the MLE remaining. They could then use the MLE and begin working to extend Noah and the only worry would be the luxury tax, and if the Chairman isn't making money hand over fist on that team then there's something wrong with him. After we extend Noah, we won't have the chance to make a max deal offer again unless someone is traded (Rose plus Noah plus Deng plus Hinrich plus filler is enough to prevent a max deal offer starting next year). So you do that trade to clear out the SF slot and to get 2 things; depth at C/Pf behind Noah and a guy who can play SG and shoot a 3 ball, which is by far the Bulls's biggest weakness.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 06:05 PM) Trying to not get my hopes up but I'm going to be heart broken if we don't sign him. I'd be happy with no Lebron if Bosh was the consolation prize. Miss on both though, and we're consigned to a decade of mediocrity unless we can turn Hinrich's contract into an all-star that some team wants to dump Gasol style.

QUOTE (Chi Town Sox @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 05:27 PM) I understand what you mean but none of those players ever batted higher than .244 in a season. Gordon has almost had more success in one 3/5 of a year (last year) than those guys had in all of their careers combined. He'll come around You're putting that much on batting average? Josh Fields hit 23 HR in 373 at bats as a rookie.

QUOTE (kev211 @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 05:19 PM) #NBA as of 2day the Bulls have the best chance of landing LBJ...Miami would need to make more roster moves...Clips have a punchers chance! Lebron would have to be suicidal to want to work for that organization. Seriously. I don't care how much talent they have. They could have the next 3 #1 picks and you'd still be crazy to go there.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 05:11 PM) How do you know you are beating their prices? I'll visit on occasion since it's right next to the Aldi and check, and i check various sale-aggregator/coupon matchup websites that list their weekly sales. Does piss me off that they never run an ad.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 05:06 PM) They don't really worry me. I see no reason why LBJ and D-Wade would want to lessen their star power. Everything I hear says that Amare is all but a lock for Miami, meaning that according to the great Jalen Rose (who is tight with Wes) its down to the Bulls and sharing a city with the Champs. Amare really is the best fit out there for Miami too. Miami isn't exactly the NY market either, you can only sell so many Jerseys there.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 04:57 PM) Hmm. Interesting. I mean, i didn't think they'd be the lowest price for everything, but I did for most things. I'll have to check out that report. Like i said, between coupons, rebates, grocery stores, Walgreens, CVS, Target, Aldi, and occasionally a few other stores, I haven't had any need to stop at Walmart, I'm constantly beating their prices. If I want something higher quality, I'll go to the farmer's market or the organic store nearby. Then again, I have lots of options nearby. The whole reason why I'm inching towards your side is that in truly blighted areas, there aren't that many options.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 04:42 PM) And where are you finding these prices at actual retail stores? Online doesn't count. Huh? Yeah, I find lots of sales listed online. They're almost never better than grocery stores. Beyond that though, every year or two some group does the survey and finds that for most items, Walmart's prices are fairly easily beat. The classic example is when Walmart lost the suit about their former slogan "always the lowest price" and had to change it to "always low prices". The comb is another example. Random link

Your religion or your livelihood.....
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 04:26 PM) And I would like to know how Wal-mart's have a negative effect on the poor. They're the cheapest place around for basic goods. It saves the poor money. Because they also have this nasty habit of creating a large number of poor people by putting what businesses do exist out of business. Also...they're often not the cheapest place for basic goods. I never shop at Walmart, because I can constantly get better prices at other stores, aside from any ideological reason. Walmart's game is to try to have the lowest price on enough core items, on the handful of "rollback" items that they advertise or on a few items that people know the price of, that they can charge you a lot more for other items and you'll still think you're getting a good price. That said, compared to the costs of having large traveling distances for any sort of quality item or fresh produce, there are inherent advantages as well.
