  1. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 19, 2010 -> 11:39 AM) I'm of the opinion that when these guys start playing like they damn-well should, we may be a small piece or two away from winning something rather than a piece or two away from blowing the whole damn thing up. The thing that makes it for me is that this really is built as a 1 year roster. Counting Jenks, there are 6 guys I wouldn't expect back next year who are either highly paid or high performers. Jenks AJ Konerko Jones Putz Garcia Add in Kotsay, Vizquel, and Castro, and you're talking about overhauling 40% of your roster in the offseason just to tread water. That's a lot easier to do if you turn some of those guys into useful parts beforehand. If they fall too far out of it this season for a small piece to be important, then next offseason, there's still a huge overhaul coming. There's really no way around it.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 19, 2010 -> 11:40 AM) Energy has an effect on the rest of CPI, even if it is excluded. You understand that, right? The government data states that completely clearly. Of course it does, but its an indirect effect. Just look at the dip in energy in 2009 that was not associated with a core CPI decline. Or the huge relative runup in 2010 that has not been associated with a CPI increase.
  3. I wouldn't be surprised if both teams would consider that... The big question for the Wizards has to be...how do they think the NBA is going to evolve post-lockout? If they can dump Arenas's contract, they could leave themselves with a huge advantage and a ton of money in their pockets coming out of the lockout, or they could leave themselves trying to open up cap space at the time when having cap space becomes suddenly less valuable because its impossible to convince players to leave as free agents. The question for the Nets owner would be...how big of a hurt does Arenas and his Contract and potential marketing issues put on that team's future?
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 19, 2010 -> 10:54 AM) Spot crude prices fell over 10% in the last month. You should see the same thing happen in May. Core CPI excludes energy costs, you know that. Did core CPI drop in late 2008 when oil costs cut in half? Core CPI is falling off a cliff.
  5. Wonder if Beckham will be out of the lineup again today.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ May 19, 2010 -> 10:23 AM) So he can hit AAA pitching, and hit it quite well; what's next? Take Gordo's spot at 2b? Give him a few months more in AAA at the least. If he keeps raking and the big league team keeps tanking, it's entirely plausible to imagine a 1b opening appearing on the big league team in July. Bringing him up, even if he struggles, won't cost him an arbitration year at that point. If somehow the big league team turns it around, then I have no issues at all with having him in AAA the whole year, and even with trying to find someone to bring in on a 1 year deal next year as a LH first baseman to take some time at the positin.
  7. I don't know if there's any reason for me to post this other than to be able to write a post with these words in it. "BP and Goldman Sachs sued for oil fraud".
  8. QUOTE (Palehosefan @ May 19, 2010 -> 10:15 AM) I know Heat fans are hoping to see Riley offer a package of something like... #18 pick(Heat pick for Washington) Beasley Toronto's future 1st Heat's 1st next year Beasley is a hometown guy for Washington, so I could see it at least being tempting. Beasley's a FA though, right? And the Wiz are under the cap enough to make him an offer.
  9. Core CPI declined in April. Somewhere back in this thread, I vaguely remember having argued that even if the government runs up a huge debt, deflation, rather than inflation, was a much bigger concern for the next few years.
  10. Major oil landfall caught by CBS. And want to know why there's so little video of oil onshore? It's not just because it's all subsurface, read the last bit here.
  11. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ May 19, 2010 -> 01:25 AM) Rumor has it, Paul refused to take Grayson's concession call. Stay classy Rand! More than rumor.
  12. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ May 19, 2010 -> 01:24 AM) Dynamics favor the insurgent in a runoff. Turnout usually drops by 20-30% and the people who come out aren't the people who are voting establishment. Bill Halter will be the Dem nominee from Arkansas I think. The good news, in my world? Blanche Lincoln's been pushing for harder and harder financial reform regulation ever since she got Halter challenging her, because he was hammering her on being in the pocket of Wall Street and that was her way out. There have been more than whispers saying that once that election was over, her votes might completely shift on the Financial Reform bill, or that Harry Reid was keeping things on the floor and up in the air that made it look like she was fighting for a stronger bill, but then they might pull some of the strength back once that election was over. Now, the cloture vote has been filed, and her seat is still up in the air. That primary challenge alone appears to have significantly strengthened the financial reform bill.
  13. QUOTE (KipWellsFan @ May 19, 2010 -> 02:53 AM) Or maybe Critz was a good candidate... Then the Dems need some more good candidates this fall.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 19, 2010 -> 09:44 AM) I'd still pick Hudson over Viciedo. Even when he's struggled like his last start, he's missing a lot of bats. And the guy was rushed through. I don't see the 3 bad starts this season for Hudson as a reason to drop him below Viciedo - yet. I don't know if it'd be Hudson being dropped as much as the 21 year old racing the Hell past him.
  15. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 19, 2010 -> 09:43 AM) It scares me even more that you think that would make any sense. Andrew Bynum has missed almost 100 games over the last 3 seasons. Even if he wasn't made of glass, he's not a dominating type that you could build your team around. The Lakers got their freebee in Pau Gasol. They're not about to get another one in John Wall. Here's the question...if you're the Wizards, and the Lakers could pull it off where you gave them the # 1 pick but you also moved Gilbert Arenas's contract, what else would you want back?
  16. And, thread re-opened after a calming down/cleanup period. As a reminder, even in this forum, there's a line.
  17. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 19, 2010 -> 09:36 AM) It scares me how much a John Wall for Andrew Bynum + pick deal makes sense. I wouldn't do that in the Wizard's chair, not for a pick guaranteed to be in the bottom of the first round and a guy whose body looks like it can't handle the NBA beating.
  18. Have at em D1. Man, the Angels have to be more disappointing than us. Worse run differential if slightly better record, offense slightly better than ours after being dynamite last season, pitching staff even worse than ours. I'm not in LA anymore so I don't read the Times. I wonder if there's as much "Fire Scioscia" sentiment there as there is for Ozzie here. After all, he hasn't won a world series since 2002 and he has a payroll that makes ours look wimpy.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 18, 2010 -> 06:57 PM) The thing is if you bring in someone without a long term deal, the players have no incentive to listen to him. Except for that whole "You're sucking and destroying your whole career" thing?
  20. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 19, 2010 -> 09:31 AM) agreed. Its a tough spot for the Wizards(which is ironic considering they have the best pick), Wall is going to be a good/great NBA player, but he doesnt really fit their need. Really, what they need is either someone crazy enough to take on Arenas's deal, or to have Arenas pull a Vernon Wells and play up to it. If that happens, they could trade Wall for a #3-#4 pick and say, an Al Jefferson type player, and have a legitimately solid rotation.
  21. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 19, 2010 -> 09:28 AM) As Texas. But if I had to lump it in with a US geographical area i'd call it the mid-west. When I said the South I was thinking like the Arkansas/Tennessee/Louisiana/Mississippi/Alabama/Georgia/North & South Carolina area. As a former resident of Indiana, I find calling Texas part of the "Mid-west" offensive.
  22. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 19, 2010 -> 09:27 AM) I dont know that a proven player would be the return, but i think that the Wizards could def trade down for more picks, or future picks and possibly a solid bench player/starter. And if Wall winds up being as good as a #1 pick should be, unless there's a top 10 player coming back in return at some point, I think it's all but impossible for them to get fair value for it.
  23. Thread cleaned up and temporarily closed.
  24. QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 19, 2010 -> 09:13 AM) This is exactly what I'm talking about NOT needing. These are garbage. They don't go far enough...they take too long to recharge...and they don't have enough HP or torque. Move along now. Did you even read my post? So, "Don't go far enough" = can't go to the moon.
