Replacing Jenks
QUOTE (WCSox @ May 10, 2010 -> 03:36 PM) Recouping *some* of Bobby salary is better than recouping none. By the deadline, if you're willing to give him up for nothing and pick up all but $1 million of his salary, that might be do-able. But let's not pretend we're getting anything useful back.

Replacing Jenks
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 10, 2010 -> 03:28 PM) Yes, it's down some. He averaged 94.8 last year and is at 94.2 this year. It isn't a lot, but there is a difference. Well, in this case, I'm going to dispute how useful an "Average" is, especially for a guy who tends to vary a lot over the course of a season. To me, last year, he took longer in working in to his good fastball than he did this year, and I think his good fastball is actually pushing the gun a little higher than it did last year (I've seen him pop 97-98 on guns this year, if they're right, and i don't think I ever saw that last year). I'd argue that average is biased by the fact that we see him take a week or two (this year) and a month or so (last year) throwing in the low 90's before his arm loosens up, and this year's number is a little lower because there's been less of a full season. IMO, it's not velocity that is his problem.

Ick. Even I don't like that.

Replacing Jenks
QUOTE (WCSox @ May 10, 2010 -> 03:23 PM) If Jose Contreras and his large salary were traded at the waiver deadline last year, it's always possible for Jenks too. If your team picks up most of that salary...like we did with Contreras and Thome.

Dallas Braden (Oakland) Throws A Perfect Game vs Tampa Bay
Caught a neat stat on ESPN while at the gym. Paraphrasing, so I might have a number or two wrong, but the names are in the correct order. Fewest swings and misses in a no-hitter: Dallas Braden: 5 Mark Buehrle: 8 Jonathan Sanchez: 13 Mark Buehrle: ~15

Gordon Beckham: What To Do?
QUOTE (forrestg @ May 10, 2010 -> 01:34 PM) Im sure if we, the fans know he has problem with breaking balls. he's going to get a steady diet from opposing pitchers. Pierre has a .297 obp so 7 out of 10 chance that when beckham is up pierre is in the dugout. He needs to be batting after someone that has a high obp and a base stealer. That would be after Rios Pitchers really don't care as much as you'd like to think about throwing fastballs with a base stealer on 1b.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 10, 2010 -> 02:19 PM) His fastball velocity is down from last year Really? Then some of these radar guns are lying to me.

QUOTE (knightni @ May 10, 2010 -> 02:50 PM) But, the Twins historically murder Buehrle. D1 typically gets murdered by Mauer and Morneau as well. 5.13 ERA, 1.52 WHIP against the Twins career, nearly identical 5.17 ERA against them last season.

Financial News
There appears to be some question out there about why GS didn't inform its shareholders of the pending SEC action against them last year when they were first notified.

Gordon Beckham: What To Do?
QUOTE (dmbjeff @ May 10, 2010 -> 12:53 PM) Maybe change his intro music? I heard that song on the radio coming into work this morning. Thanks to his slump, it almost made me cry.

A Royals Acquisition that May Make Sense
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 10, 2010 -> 12:39 PM) http://www.baseballamerica.com/statistics/...ds/?pl_id=59642 Alex Gordon already with 2 homers with the O-Royals, low BA but 891 OPS. Must be very strange to come from Nebraska, the Golden Spikes Award, etc., and now to be returning "home" to Nebraska again under these conditions. I'm pulling for him, he seems like a good kid who's really gotten screwed over by a dysfunctional organization that for some inexplicable reason prefers to go down with Chris Getz and Alberto Callaspo over Alex. Gordon reminds me of where Beckham would be if he was hurt for a couple of the next few seasons and never got his average above .250 when he was playing.

7.5 games back.
QUOTE (hogan873 @ May 10, 2010 -> 12:10 PM) I just don't know if there's anyone out there who can make that much of an impact. At least not anyone the Sox can realistically go after. Aside from adding Pujols, I don't think there's a bat that would be big enough to make the kind of impact we need unless Beckham, Quentin, Ramirez, Pierzynski, and Pierre can pick it up. And if they do so, I'm not sure that adding a bat will be necessary.

Report: Obama to nominate Kagan to Supreme Court
QUOTE (Tex @ May 10, 2010 -> 10:37 AM) As I said with Bush. The President should be allowed, should be expected even, to nominate someone from within their political spectrum. The confirmation should come down to matters of character. Doesn't mean the people who elected that President can't be disappointed.

NBA playoffs thread
QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ May 10, 2010 -> 09:37 AM) Im not a big Rondo fan but last night he was a machine. Not disagreeing. Just not going to use rebounds as a metric for how Rose develops. With Noah on that team, there shouldn't be more than a handful of rebounds a game that get out to Rose.

QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ May 10, 2010 -> 09:33 AM) The 18 he had was for rebounds, which is what made Rondo's game so sick last night. Im assuming you thought it was assists. When a PG gets that many rebounds...IMO, it's often a combination of being in the right system to do so and having bigs who aren't doing the rebounding job or who are getting shut down by someone else in the game. I'm not sure I ever look at that as a positive.

Report: Obama to nominate Kagan to Supreme Court
CNN cites unnamed sources in saying the President has chosen Solicitor General Elena Kagan to replace Justice Stevens on the Supreme Court. As I said when Justice Stevens retired...this announcement may well shift the court to the right as much as the Alito/O'Connor swap did.

The environment thread
Secretary of the Interior Salazar made some vague statements last week suggesting corporate malfeasance. And a prof from UC says he has a pretty good idea what that means.

What are the positives of today?
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 10, 2010 -> 01:14 AM) so bad it's laughable. The problem is...that description is equally applicable to Beckham as well.

Replacing Jenks
QUOTE (spiderman @ May 10, 2010 -> 07:30 AM) I'm sort of with you, but I think they would go with the proven commodities who have done it before first. Putz has had a lot of success in that role, and Thornton, although with only limited experience there, would probably get the first shot. I think they would do this over Santos simply because it's less risky for now. Santos would probably get more opporutinites in the late innings though. Putz just hasn't looked that good this season either.

Man, what a screwed up schedule we have the next couple weeks. Offday 2 @ Minn Offday Stretch of 16 games in a row, starting with: 3 @ KC 2 @ Detroit 2 home vs. LAA Interleague series home vs. FLA 7 game road trip through Cleveland and Tampa How often do you see a 5 game home stand?

Paul Konerko AL player of week
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 10, 2010 -> 08:24 AM) I'm pretty sure he's said that if he was ever approached with a trade for the good of the organization he'd accept it. For example. No reason to start dumping people yet, you can wait to the deadline and do that.

NBA playoffs thread
QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 10, 2010 -> 02:01 AM) 29-18-13 is just sick for anybody, yet alone a PG. 18 rebounds for a PG?! That is Magic Johnson/Jason Kidd territory. If there is a couple of things I want Rose to learn from Rondo (besides his reach around steals, though Rondo's defense is really overrated) it is his playmaking I.Q. and his aggressiveness to get tough rebounds especially with Rose's superior athleticism. IMO, the best things to help DR1 at this point are: 1. a legitimate coach, and 2., someone for him to pass to.
