  1. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 06:46 PM) Omir Vizquez? Isn't he the utility infielder/rotating DH? Until I'm proven wrong or Damon is signed, I'm expecting him to be the primary DH.
  2. If you think I talk out of both sides of my mouth here, that's fine, but there's still an easy answer. Pass a bill putting a substantial and increasing-with-time price on carbon emissions and let the markets sort it out. (oh, and end the coal and oil subsidies too).
  3. QUOTE (WCSox @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 05:31 PM) I don't understand the big hang-up on deferred money, especially if you're already mega-rich like Damon. If they're legally-obligated to pay you, you'll still get it. Because, due to inflation, deferred money is worth less than money paid up front.
  4. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 04:36 PM) Obama giving out the big bucks to Vogtle to build two new reactors: http://www.ajc.com/news/vogtle-nuclear-pla...ear-308302.html Well, as an energy program I obviously disagree, but franky, as a jobs program, which is what we really need right now, if it gets people employed int hat area for the next few years, it's acceptable. Of course, what's probably more likely to happen is that the government will guarantee the loans, private financing will never come through completely, nothing will ever get built as the price keeps going up and up, and the government will lose a couple billion on the deal to wall street investors.
  5. The Tonight Show with Jay Leno may be losing Kevin Eubanks, the band leader.
  6. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 01:58 PM) Is Fiat making cars for the U.S now? They bought the bankrupt remnants of Chrysler.
  7. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 02:29 PM) I don't watch him, but I've never heard O'Reilly call someone "an irresponsible, homophobic, racist, reactionary, ex-nude model, teabagging supporter of violence against woman and against politicians with whom he disagrees." You know what? There's some reasonable quibbles with the methodology, but there was a legitimate study a couple years ago that found that O'Reilly typically uses negative name-calling against a his political opponents on average once every 10 seconds or so.
  8. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 02:06 PM) Except that Olbermann doesn't even pretend to be a journalist, and he's downright libelous/slanderous in his comments. The Scott Brown rant was pathetic. In other words, he's exactly like O'Reilly.
  9. QUOTE (WCSox @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 12:50 PM) If Kenny feels comfortable going that route, it's a possibility. Then again, it's also possible that Jones gets DFA'd in June and we got back to a 12-man pitching staff by default (unless Q goes down again, in which case we'll need another RF). I can't see this team going with Damon and Kotsay as its only backup OF's. Not if they care about defense at all. Not with how Ozzie likes using righty/lefty matchups, not with Quentin's injury history and Rios's struggles.
  10. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 12:04 PM) Man card was just handed in...... You have to hand in your man card when you think it's funny to watch people fall flat on their face while trying to jump on ice?
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 10:57 AM) You seem to see only options A or B here - defend a belief or say nothing. The real answer should be to respond with evidence, scientific data, an utterance of where that evidence points and why. That isn't defending a belief, that is providing data. That is not instilling politics, and doesn't need to be. I'm arguing that when I hear that, providing data to counter a person's political belief...you're making a political argument and that's how I hear it.
  12. QUOTE (flavum @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 12:41 PM) I was thinking about this. I would much rather have Jayson Nix on the bench than Jones. I think you need two infielders on the bench...Vizquel and Nix. Plus Nix can probably run better than Jones, and he can also be put in the outfield in a pinch. So if the Sox do sign Damon, I might hold on to Jones until the end of spring training, but I wouldn't be against just dumping him. And as far as the bullpen, they'll carry seven no matter what. I have no doubt about that. I think the fact that Jones is a RF hitter and Damon and Pierre are LH hitters makes a strong case for keeping Jones. If you sign another LH OF to mainly fill the DH spot, and you also want to keep Kotsay because it's somewhat useful to have a backup 1b so that Konerko can rest or DH once a week as well, then really, the answer is 11 pitchers.
  13. Am I the only one getting the impression from figure skating that shockingly few of the contestants are actually any good? Seems like every single routine I watch, there's at least 1, if not more than 1 major fall or error on the jumps. I feel like I watched these 12 years ago and the level of skill of the competitors was an order of magnitude better than what we've seen so far.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 10:27 AM) I am guessing with Borass involved on the other side of the table, it is easier to do this than to keep playing the games in the media. And right there is why this thread is dragging on and why everyone is getting flustered...this is a classic Scott Boras quasi-public negotiation game.
  15. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 09:56 AM) Its not for the instructor to answer - that's my point. So you're a professor teaching a class, a student asks a question that directly challenges the basis for the class, and the professor isn't able to answer it in a way that says why the professor believes what he is asking is correct? I think this illustrates the catch-22 here. If you don't answer, you've undermined your own class because you're unwilling to defend it. If you do answer, you're suddenly instilling politics into things. Works the same way for Climate Change. And probably a number of other subjects we could come to if we wanted.
  16. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 09:09 AM) Or he would really prefer to play somewhere else and is giving whatever other teams are also interested every last possible moment to come up with a comparable offer... Then his agent wouldn't be Scott Boras. You use Scott Boras as your agent when you want the most money possible, not when you have a list of cities you're not willing to go to.
  17. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 09:37 AM) By answering with scientific evidence, and then allowing people to either take that evidence to heart, or continue to believe in something that can't be measured. Teaching at higher levels shouldn't be about absolute answers, it should be about facts and information, and allowing for analytical thought and conculsions from your students (whether scientific or not). And you wouldn't judge that type of answer to be a politically loaded one? I would.
  18. QUOTE (daa84 @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 09:05 AM) lets hope this doesnt turn out similar to when JR got his nose in the Doug Collins coaching fiasco Why? If Damon decides he really doesn't want to return to playing like Collins, at least he doesn't go to the competition.
  19. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 08:57 AM) That's interesting. The hard science guy found lots of politics in college, and the poli sci guys found surprisingly little of it. If you're a professor teaching a class on the geologic history of the earth and you get the "How do you know the Earth isn't 6000 years old" question, how do you answer it and not be political?
  20. QUOTE (chw42 @ Feb 16, 2010 -> 10:41 PM) I wonder what source Rosenthal got his initial (the wrong one) report from about the Sox making a second offer. It sounds like a classic Boras...trying to get a team negotiating against itself.
  21. QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 05:53 AM) Was anyone else surprised at how unpolitical their college was? I was pretty relieved, I think I would've been annoyed as hell at Madison, Wisc in 2008. All my polisci courses were so process specific it never really got into political parties. It might just be that thousands of 18-24 year olds on their own without parental influence tend to be more liberal before they find jobs and move on. The sad thing is...I got the opposite impression, and I don't think it was deliberate...I think it was because I was in a science, and you can't take a class on evolution or on the fossil record or on climate and just pass over the kind of questions you got from the crowd without having the whole class undermined.
  22. I think it's in the 20% to 40% range. I think if anyone was still offering Damon $6 million a year, he'd have signed by now, and he had to beg the Yankees to get them to offer that the last time. If the higher amounts that are out there are true, then Boras has a team negotiating against itself again.
  23. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 16, 2010 -> 05:53 PM) I recall people feeling good about the 2005 team. I recall people b****ing vehemently about the 2007 team and Ozzie Guillen kept talking about how Darin Erstad was a great baseball player. The reason I felt good in 2005 in the preseason was that when I looked at the team, I didn't see an obvious hole. Yeah, you could probably count on some guys to have down seasons (i.e. Rowand) but there was a legitimate starter at every position, 5+ deep in the rotation, a deep bullpen, and guys having down seasons would probably be averaged out by guys having up seasons (i.e. Garland). It had a good balance of speed, defense, and power. The 2 things I'm missing right now from this team in comparison to that one are: I don't feel like we have a legit starter at the DH position, and I'm unconvinced by our relief corps (but...relief bounces up and down so much from year to year that you kinda never know with that).
  24. Wang to the Nationals. $2 million, could earn up to $3 million more in performance.
  25. QUOTE (knightni @ Feb 16, 2010 -> 05:05 PM) I get The Score crystal clear 100 miles away here in Michigan. I cannot, however, get Chicago FM radio here. I hope that they can simulcast games on FM and AM, because there are no other White Sox radio network affiliates close enough for me to pick them up. While coming back to TN after Christmas, I was getting a Bulls game on 1000 all the way to Northern Tennessee.
