It was taught in mine as well. Although we'd technically lost to the British in 1812, we'd won some serious concessions from them. Their army had controlled forts in the midwest after the Revolution and they refused to give them up until the treaty was signed ending that war, so that war helped us control the central part of the continent. And although the war was over, Andrew Jackson smashed the british army trying to take New Orleans (they hadn't yet heard word of the peace). The Era of good feelings was something of a celebration of how we came out of that war. It was also referenced in the early 90's James L. Brooks/Jon Lovitz series "The Critic".

Should try Num3ers. They film half the location shots at my school.

Garfien reports Sox might "revisit" a Thome return
Balta1701 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 07:01 PM) Basically it boils down to we are looking for one of these guys to blink and offer to sign cheap. That will be our DH for next year. And given his Chicago roots and where he is relative to 600, thome is as likely of a candidate as anyone. -
QUOTE (striker62704 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 06:12 PM) Kenny's probably hyping him up so he can trade him. He's waiting for his brother to sign his extension first. I still think having his brother, the fact that they changed agents, etc., pretty much is a 100% guarantee that D2: the mighty danks will get a shot in the White Sox OF before any trades with him are even considered. I think his brother makes him the 1 untouchable in our minor leagues right now.

Garfien reports Sox might "revisit" a Thome return

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 06:36 PM) I'm all for Thome, if we get a really good RF/LF and don't need Thome to be the monster RBI guy. I really doubt we're going to find a "really good RF/LF" outside of the guys we have now unless someone develops suddenly. We're not spending the money on Holliday, Bay, or Figgins. Outside of that though, I still think we need a LH bat who can hit 5th/6th and give a good OPS. Thome is one option, and i'm not ruling him out, for all we know he'll give a "I live in Chicago" discount. -
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 06:42 PM) You don't need any of this, only 1 word required: Palmeiro You can make a serious list if you wanted beyond that one. Hunter and Jeter come to mind.

Maybe both. Think I stole something berry flavored to take home.

Kinda feel like I earned that beer, for once.

Seriously, I was about an hour from handing in my thesis to the Grad office today when I got an email from Moveon saying in the subject line "Drop whatever you're doing". I suddenly wanted to hurt them.

Bob Sanders out for the season.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 04:22 PM) It wouldn't be hard at all to re-acquire all 38 players that saw the field for the Sox in '05. McCarthy would be the only marginally difficult acquisition. Marte, but do we want him back?

QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 04:54 PM) He went pretty crazy with the stick in the second half of 06'. I think that is when many thought he was reaching his potential. Unfortunately, he did not maintain that. However, he's still a relatively young guy who should be in his prime years, so hopefully we can get him on track and reap the benefits. If there's ever a year for Walker to earn his salary...between Teahen and Rios, he's got 2 guys who have the talent to rip a hole in the central, but who haven't lived up to it the last couple years.

QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 04:41 PM) Remember this is coming from a guy that went out with the guys to see AC/DC on a Friday Night at the Aragon Brawl Room and went to see Barry Manilow, THE Barry Manilow in Saturday night. Go and enjoy yourself, but let her know it is because you respect her, and want to meet her friends. But of the s*** that a relationship goes through, this ain't nothing. MANILOW!

QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 04:43 PM) This is not nearly the end of the world that some are making it out to be. Personally, I think it's something to be excited about. If we could somehow get Teahen to flash the form he was showing as a kid in 2006 this would be a spectacular move. Man he cost us a lot that year

To paraphrase... "Ground ball up the middle, base hit, here comes Harris, he'll score, and the White Sox take a 1-0 lead."
-
Seriously though isn't that the right move? We heed a hopefully LH, Power hitting DH in this lineup to add some more pop. There's like a dozen of them on the market if you count the right-handed guys. There's not going to be a run on them, they're going to be available in late jan/early Feb just like Abreu and Hudson were last year, why not wait a little bit until the contracts for these guys shake out?
-
I think I did that today. Not quite sure. Having some version of something printed, sent some emails, etc.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 03:43 PM) And our tax rate sucks too. Paying damn near 10% on everything I purchase is pretty ridiculous too. You get that back if you buy a multi-million dollar house.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 03:39 PM) That was his numbers on the whole. Then I'm going to discount them. He was a solid hitter with Hotlanta. .325 batting, .958 OPS. He may not be that good of a player anywhere else, I'm not sure, but Atlanta and Pittsburgh had 2 totally different players.

God, I'm somewhere between a nervous wreck and completely exhausted.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 03:26 PM) They had to go to this alternative because we voted against there stupid ass bond bills cause they were essentially junk bonds that would have had the government paying ridiculous interest rates. On top of that, I'm also sick and tired of a state that can't manage a deficit and gets off budget by billions. Its sad to think that they are like 100000% more accurate this time around and still need a free loan from tax-payers like myself. Frankly, I'm glad I'm escaping this state. The state's government is such a mess that it really hurts the rest of the state. And that's not just talking about the tax levels or prop 13 or prop 8 or anything like that, even small stuff like the water issues...that's not an issue of not enough water, it's an issue of no political will to solve it.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 03:30 PM) LaRoche is a pretty mediocre player. He's a .350 wOBA 1B (one of only 5 1B under Konerko in '09) which puts him in the bottom 25% at that position. Basically, if you like a slightly lesser version of what Konerko did last year (accounting for the league switch) except from the left side and with 10% more K's then Adam's your man. Is that counting his numbers for the whole year or just with Atlanta? He was a totally different player in Atlanta from Pittsburgh (which of course makes me wonder how he'll hit anywhere other than Atlanta0

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 03:19 PM) Royals fans love the deal as well BTW. I'd say it could be a nice deal for both sides when it's all said and done. I just know we're going to hate seeing Getz in the 8th/9th innings for the next 5 years. He's one of those guys who will just keep burning us.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 02:58 PM) I don't think he'll get too big of a contract and could be a great value. He's got nice power, hits from the left side, and seems to be coming into his own. Even if we don't move Paulie I think he'd be a nice value pick-up as a DH and that his lefty bat would help stabilize the lineup. I'm still not convinced he can hit anywhere outside of Atlanta. I vaguely recall him being like Olivo on the day we traded him when he was dealt to Pittsburgh. Suddenly he gets traded back where he wanted to be and he catches fire. Just wonder if that isn't a comfort thing for him.

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 02:25 PM) the credit to homeowners appears to have been a disaster. Which is why it'll be extended. Oh wait, was extended. The things you miss while writing a 266 page thesis.
