  1. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 09:52 PM) I hope the Phillies are done for a while; no need to see them in the WS again unless we are playing and beating them. If Hamels can figure anything out and Happ develops like a rookie starter should, this Phillies team could easily be back next year. Remember, they get Lee a full year next year.
  2. Quit telling us things we already know.
  3. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 08:47 PM) Bring on the Winter Meetings! AKA...the world champion Yankees sign______
  4. So, he was wearing Jordans during an exhibition game. And Adidas will not renew their contract with UCF. I think this pretty much proves to me that the university agreed to that clause during recruiting.
  5. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 08:27 PM) Again, that's fine. But the system is in place now. The Yankees make a s***load of loot and put it right back into the team. Isn't that what any fan of any team would want? The question is...is that the best thing for the sport?
  6. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 07:30 PM) All that's fine. But with all the whining about their payroll (not singling you out. I'm talking everybody in general), you would think they were going on their 9th straight title. I just find it annoying to continually complain about their payroll. They do what they do because they can. It's not against the rules. How many times just on this board has KW been referred to as 'cheap'? Yet we all hate the Yankees because they spend more than everybody else. Saying its not against the rules doesn't really make sense when we're mostly suggesting that we want the rules changed.
  7. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 07:22 PM) As, I recall last year they didn’t have Teixeira, Sabathia, Burnett and Swish. There’s no strategy to what the Yankee do, their resources insure competition. Money doesn’t necessarily buy championships, but (if managed somewhat competently) they insure almost totally that a team will be in the position to do so. Buying the best players is neither graceful, nor particularly shocking or impressive, it simply works. It doesn’t male what the Yankee do right, and it doesn’t make me fond of seeing them win year in and year out. I think it’s possible to win with limited resources, I just think there’s an inherent disadvantage therein. It's also worth noting that only 1 team that was outside the top 13 or so salaries in baseball make the playoffs this year, the Twins. (Also, the Cardinals were at 13 and they added a lot of salary mid-season so I'm not sure if that's counted in the total I looked at). OUt of the bottom 17 teams in salary, only the Twins, and only in the weakest division in MLB, made the playoffs.
  8. QUOTE (Brian @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 05:42 PM) That would require Manuel to be a good manager. All I know is if Pedro gets into trouble in the 3rd inning, you gotta yank him. I trust their bullpen less than I do Pedro.
  9. I just feel like it's rolling the dice again. I just don't pheel like the phils are that lucky.
  10. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 03:03 PM) enough for me as welland with this post I am one up on Balta in this thread. God, this whole thesis thing has slowed me down.
  11. Russian Roulette seems like the solution here.
  12. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 01:39 PM) I think Pedro gets destroyed tonight. I hope I'm wrong but I get that feeling too.
  13. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 02:20 PM) As many of those cutbacks as they made, it hardly made a dent in the grand scheme of things considering how far in deficit they are. You missed the point. The more cutbacks they made, the bigger the deficit got. It's the little Hoover version of stimulus.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 02:15 PM) Except it won't be. The end years will be over 10 million. Do we really think D1 won't be earning that $ at that point anyway? The other option is for him to be gone.
  15. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 02:07 PM) Governments don't know how to cut back on spending, because that ultimately means they have to lay off all the people they hired on that they didn't really need -- which is equivalent to throwing votes in the opponents basket. Getting reelected is more important than doing the right thing for your state/country. California made huge spending cutbacks at the state level already. It turned out that it did exactly what you'd expect; they cut an awful lot of jobs, gave people furloughs and pay cuts, that wound up causing more people to lose jobs because people weren't spending money, and thus pushed California's tax receipts even lower. Quite literally it is the exact opposite of a stimulus.
  16. We should all burn our pants in protest. Done.
  17. QUOTE (striker62704 @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 01:03 PM) I'd offer 4 years $18mil with a 5th year option at $12mil. I think since he's arb-eligible this year he can earn quite a bit more than that by simply not signing, that wouldn't be a competitive offer any more.
  18. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 12:43 PM) Where? CF? LF? I think they end up with Holliday. I'll say Damon-Melky-Holliday is their starting OF and they *gasp* try very hard to trade Nick Swisher over the offseason, but find themselves unable to. I think they'll either put him in a corner OF spot or realize Melky isn't exactly an all-star in CF. The reality is though that they're going to need a leadoff hitter and he's the best one on the market, unless they're willing to trade for Crawford (Would the Rays take either Hughes or Chamberlain at this point?)
  19. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 12:10 PM) I find it funny that almost all the rumors about Iwamura had him going to the Cubs. Seriously, they'll sign DeRosa.
