  1. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 1, 2009 -> 04:00 PM) Also, WTF is with conservatives politicizing and bashing the Olympics now? They're just using it to take shots at Obama. Duh.
  2. Last 8 games, he's hitting .260 with an .873 OPS.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 1, 2009 -> 12:29 PM) You must be kidding. Zarathustra spoke the truth and yet none listened....
  4. Back on that death penalty case in Texas I posted a few days ago...yesterday, Texas Governor Perry fired and replaced several of the people on the State's forensic investigation panel who are looking in to that case, and the new chairman has canceled at least 1 hearing where additional forensic testimony was to be heard.
  5. QUOTE (Felix @ Oct 1, 2009 -> 12:20 PM) Only problem with this theory is that their current GM isn't a complete moron like Dave Littlefield was. Doesn't mean he won't eventually have to trade the guy for parts.
  6. QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 1, 2009 -> 10:45 AM) We are a much lesser country because the Hammer™ is not President. X-Disease would be much more common if that ever happened, IMO.
  7. QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 1, 2009 -> 09:44 AM) unless we are talking square dancing Very interesting. Did you just attempt to Square Tom Delay?
  8. QUOTE (WCSox @ Oct 1, 2009 -> 09:38 AM) It *might* be possible to play AJ and Flowers in the same lineup and use Paulie as the emergency 3rd catcher. But he hasn't caught for so long that it probably wouldn't be a good idea. If you wanted to try to get Flowers 400+ Ab's and use him as a DH for a decent fraction of the time (which isn't the worst idea I've ever heard for his development) then that's one way to do it. You'd basically need to bring in a left handed hitter who can also play corner OF and DH to make it work though, and not just Kotsay. As such, your 4 man bench + DH becomes Kotsay, Nix, Flowers, Backup C, and that unnamed OF. Podsednik or Abreu would potentially fill that role. It's one way to get Flowers a lot of MLB at bats without having him displace AJ behidn the plate too much.
  9. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 1, 2009 -> 10:32 AM) Doesn't matter how mainstream he is, my point is that media sells what sells. If people stop watching him, he goes away. Sort of sad though, that people would waste their time watching someone like this. Just like ignoring the Turner Diaries made it go away.
  10. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Oct 1, 2009 -> 09:26 AM) Reconciliation is how the Bush tax cuts were passed. Actually, as far as I can tell that article is not talking about reconciliation either, it's talking about another classic Senate tactic, taking a bill that's already come to the floor, completely swapping out the text and using that hulk as a way to bring a different bill to the floor. It's just another of those arcane rules that has been used for decades but which is suddenly controversial because, you know, health care = evil. Reconciliation IIRC is actually more of a new tactic than that one, but it's also new in the same sense that the new 60 vote standard to pass everything is new since you don't have to stay conscious to filibuster and delay.
  11. QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 1, 2009 -> 09:15 AM) restructuringhappened in the early part of this century when the GOP led my The Hammer™ forced new districts. Shoulda stuck to dancing.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 1, 2009 -> 09:00 AM) One day until we should be hearing. Wow. The process has gone quickly. Really? seems quick to you?
  13. QUOTE (coco1997 @ Oct 1, 2009 -> 09:00 AM) Apparently it's more difficult to decipher sarcasm on the Internet than I thought. Yes, I was joking. But I am curious what you guys think it would realistically take to get him. Gordon Beckham.
  14. QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 1, 2009 -> 08:52 AM) Minny and California have embraced Kinky-like candidates, I just do not see Texas following Or you could just take our governor. We really don't want him.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 08:26 AM) So Balta are the two quakes related? And are they related to the 9.3 on Boxing Day 04? They are essentially unrelated, although it's always possible that the slight effect of passing seismic waves from one event could trigger a second at a long distance. But that only is really going to be possible if the fault is already primed to go. In that case, it could just have easily been set off by the tides. Or a passing butterfly. Whatever. The Samoa quake is completely removed from the area that broke in 2004 and is a totally distinct system. The Indonesia quake is almost certainly related at least in a technical sense; it takes years after a quake as big as the 2004 event(s) for seismic activity to return to normal (aftershocks go down exponentially with time after a big event) and the technical definition of an aftershock is that it is an earthquake that occurs within 2 rupture-lengths of the initial event before seismicity has returned to normal background levels. The rupture length in 2004 was from India down through Sumatra, like 1000+ KM, so basically every event there for the next 10 years could be considered an aftershock in a technical sense. The other way to think about it...the 2004 event(s) involved substantial motion and reorganizing of the current stress fields. Those events will have changed the stress state in many areas nearby, and thus, made some more primed for failure. This one probably relates in that sense.
  16. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 08:31 AM) Its amazing that one earthquake/tsunami leads to 100 deaths, and another one a few years back leads to a couple hundred thousand deaths, when both of the earthquakes were massive. I know everything doesnt always play out the same, its just funny(and in this case certainly not haha funny) how the world works sometimes. This quake was probably a factor of a few thousand times less intense than the 2004 event(s).
  17. Step 1: Fire ozzie Step 2: Get the Pirates to hire Ozzie Step 3: Cut a hole in a box Step 4: Trade McCutcheon straight up for Wise.
  18. According to a new book by an author from the (Right wing website) Newsmax, threats against this president investigated by the Secret Service are coming in at a rate 4x that of the last president. (Note, since I got attacked last time I called a website a right wing website...Newsmax today ran and then pulled a blog post suggesting that the only way to deal with the Obama Problem was a military coup.)
  19. So basically it's a scandal that 2 Senate committees passed alternate versions of the 2 bills, the Dems can only bring 1 bill to the floor, so they're going to have to go through some shenanigans either way to bring about a single bill to vote on instead of letting the bill die because the 2 bills don't match. Basically, it's a scandal that the Senate votes on a health care bill. Why do I get the feeling that you have a problem with the Dems using a procedural technique to try to move towards a majority vote on a health care bill, but you'll have no problem with the Republicans using a procedural technique to prevent a majority vote on a health care bill?
  20. QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 08:25 PM) I read somewhere that in advanced stages of dementia/Alzheimer's people start turning into assholes and they're really hard to be around because it starts taking over that part of the brain. Or something like that. There was one point where my grandfather go so agitated that on adrenaline he was literally able to pick my dad up and like throw him across the room during that. Worst damn disease...
  21. QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 02:45 PM) Agreed. I think they will have MLB next season. Lots of customers pressuring. It's a lot more complicated than that, esp. with the NFL. There is big money in those exclusive or nearly exclusive deals.
  22. This proves 1 thing. NSS types faster than Lost.
