One other thing to like about the Peavy trade
Balta1701 replied to kitekrazy's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 5, 2009 -> 07:08 AM) The Padres had a proposal on the table IIRC, Hendry just didn't want to do it. I think it was something like 5 players for Peavy. Wasn't one of those players Soto though? -
Link Cabrera was 0/11 with a walk during that last series, FWIW.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 4, 2009 -> 05:43 PM) I guess they were expecting something better than this. It did take Belichick till his second team to become a stud (and that is the last time I'm ever going to compare Jauron to Belichick). They apparently thought they saw something good. I told TRU that I give them till 2-5. It might happen sooner than that. I believe they've now lost atleast 8 games in a row within the division, and they obviously looked absolutely awful today, and that's two weeks in a row. I don't see them winning 6 games at this point. And I'm quietly hoping for Cowher or Shanahan. Actually this was his 3rd team. He grabbed some of the Lions magic when he took over on an interim basis. They actually improved while he coached them, IIRC. It wasn't the worst idea in the world to bring him in when he took over. But they've just held on too long; he flat out doesn't do the job of taking players and turning them in to a winning football team at all. That team just expects to lose every time out. Buffalo isn't shelling out for Cowher, and probably not for Shanahan either. At least not until they're in L.A. Schottenheimer might be the kind of guy that might fit as a retread; guy who's been out for a couple of years who isn't in heavy demand and thus can be had more cheaply.

QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 4, 2009 -> 05:13 PM) As long as they stay away from soft-tossing college guys in the top 5 rounds, I'm okay with drafting pitchers. Depends on your definition of "Soft-tossing" and your definition of "5". I wouldn't be mad with a guy like a Broadway even in the 2nd or Sandwich round; they're just not going to succeed all the time no matter what their makeup is, and it's always possible for one of those sort to develop into at least an average player. First round though...yeah...no one throwing upper-80's in college.

Ed Reed and Ray Lewis went off on the refs.
-
Doesn't mean he couldn't just do the division. (It should probably be round 73 according to my math and assuming 26 letters per alphabet. Possibly 72 if we have a whole lot of misses).
-
Bigedwalsh, you've been keeping count?
-
Zima. Tastes like Zit.
-
I just wish he wasn't so frustrating on the basepaths.

It took like 15 seconds to clock the ball there for Dallas.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Oct 4, 2009 -> 03:04 PM) Who gives a s*** about that stuff though? f*** his future arb status and all that stuff, that garbage is for penny-pinchers like the Pirates and Rays. If Hudson gives us a better chance to win in 2010 then he needs to be here, and I think he will be here unless he's traded. You don't think the Super-2 deadline on June 1 was a reason why Gordon Beckham showed up on June 3rd?

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Oct 4, 2009 -> 03:02 PM) I think the off season will disappoint many fans. I don't see the Sox making any major trades since they don't have much to trade without it hurting them in other areas. This is Kenny Williams's team. Which season has not involved a significant makeover of the roster? He'll surprise us. That's the only thing I'm confident about.
-
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Oct 4, 2009 -> 02:58 PM) As far as getting innings, why? If he can help the 2010 Sox then isn't that better than helping the 2011 Sox? It's not like Hudson won't be able to work on things during side sessions while in the pen, and being there actually gives him an even better shot in the future because he'll get to know MLB hitters that way. Besides, it's not like Hudson can't continue to improve the consistency of his secondary stuff as a fulltime starter in 2011. It's not like he's going to lose anything in the meantime. Depends...we could potentially buy another season before he hits FA if we start him in the minors next year.

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Oct 4, 2009 -> 02:54 PM) How has Viciedo been doing in the minors? I heard at one time they don't think he can play 3rd but 1st. I can't see how ALexi going back to 2nd and now Beckham at SS would improve anything. Viciedo didn't light it up for most of the season. He was showing gradual signs of improvement but wore down towards the end of the year. There's no chance he's ready for 2010. He might be a 2011 option if he shows serious improvement. He's on our Arizona Fall League list, that's his first point. Defensively he had a lot of errors but there's been some talk that he's nimble enough to handle 3rd if he can get all the moves down; he could well grow in to at least an average 3b. I'm much more worried about his bat. His bat comes around and we'll find a place for him.

Predict now; What Happens on Sunday w/Twins, Tigers?

QUOTE (Benchwarmerjim @ Oct 4, 2009 -> 02:47 PM) I applaud the effort the Sox gave today. I thought the 8th inning was going to be one of those inning where Verlander implodes and gives up 9 runs because Jim Leyland leaves him in for 125 pitches Bah, don't applaud us for today, we really weren't that good. Applaud Peavy and Garcia. You're playing on Tuesday because of them. -
Vast gap between now and then in the 4th dimension...

QUOTE (Benchwarmerjim @ Oct 4, 2009 -> 02:38 PM) the Twins were 7 back on Sept 7, 5.5 back Sep 14, 3 games back Sep 30 amazing run for a team that flirted 2 games either side of .500 for 90% of the season This will be the first and only time you'll ever be happy that the White Sox have these kind of starting pitchers. -
This has been a fairly bad weekend for the Senator, thanks to the NY Times. The Senate Ethics Committe and the Departmetn of Justice are going to get in on the act this week.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2009 -> 02:16 PM) He FLEW threw our system, and when he got here, he started walking a lot of guys. I want to make sure that his control is a bit finer, personally. If we didn't have Garcia as a cheap option, I wouldn't mind Hudson starting here, but right now I think it would be better in the long run for him to get his innings. To me there's a big difference between saying that a guy needs to work on his control and a guy needs to work on his 3rd/4th pitches. That's why I noted that. Just about everyone who comes up from the minors throwing less than 99 needs to work on his control; pitchers in the majors know how to take stuff around the corners. Garcia def. should have the #5 slot barring injury, and Hudson should be somehow considered the #6 guy, but I'm much less certain with him that "Getting his innings" is as much of a priority as for other pitcher (i.e. Poreda) who genuinely needed to work on another pitch. I could live with him in the Pen if that's where they wanted him.

There's always next year.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 4, 2009 -> 10:44 AM) I don't know why the White Sox would trade for a wife beater. To be fair, he is a free agent, they wouldn't have to trade for him. But...yeah.
-
I really like the Nick Johnson concept.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2009 -> 01:15 PM) Unless you think his future is in the pen, he needs the innings to work on that third and maybe fourth pitch. Really? That's been your impression of him? I've sort of gotten the feeling that he might well be better served by facing big league hitters, his secondary stuff already seems almost there.
-
Blah. That wasn't as much fun as it could have been. And by that I mean the whole year.
